What's been the biggest letdown you've had?

Curious about what people find to be the biggest letdown that you have had in the game. I don't mean bugs, development issues, installation problems or anything like that; instead, I mean things in the game for which you had high hopes but it let you down.

I have a few, so take them as examples:
* Most spells are useless or redundant because of the nature of gameplay. i.e. calm is mostly useless because of how levelling works.

* Higher level armour looks stupid, especially glass. Mithril armour looks good, but it stops there. I've often put a shield spell on one piece in the set so that the armour ratings will be equivalent. The helmets are usually the worst. Such is the case with SI armour too.

*
It's neat that I can commit crimes. But how is it that the guards are omniscient? If I have a 1 gold bounty, every guard in Cyrodiil knows it and is on my ass about it.

That's it for starters. Feel free to add your own or to embellish mine.

Ready, set, gripe!

The whole fighters guild questline. It seems like all the quests are somehow the same. And whats with the ending? Become head of the fighters guild. No reward like the cowl of nocturnal in thieves guild? It just sucks :(

- Leveled items/loot

- Leveled enemies

- Linearity in quests (i.e. no choice between good or evil)

- Sometimes stupid and annoying voice acting, especially the male breton

- The fact that there are no requirements to join a guild and rise in ranks (e.g. you can suck at magic and still become archmage)

- Illogical things (e.g. the people in Cheydinhal complain about the fines. Someone says they made him pay 5 gold, he doesn't make that in a year. However, bandits walk around in expensive glas or daedric armor. Another things is I come out of the sewers, have just seen the emperor being murdered, but all Cyrodiil is already talking about it.)

- Removed spells, which were available in Morrowind

- Removed skills and items, which were available in Morrowind

- Beautiful, but boring landscape. Only a few roads.

- Omniscient guards

- Not enough guilds, no houses

- Respawning NPCs and items, which makes only artifacts rare. I think it's strange that there were only two complete sets of daedric armor in Morrowind, but in Cyrodiil almost everyone is wearing that.

These are the things that come to my mind right now. I'm sure I'm missing a bunch of other things. It's still a nice game, though. Although it could be a lot less buggy and glitchy.

The enchanting is too limited. I wanted to make myself an authentic Morrowind-style Jinkblade, but no, you can't enchant things with paralysis.

I thought the Imperial Dragon Armour was a let down, no matter what type you chose and the biggest one for me is bloody Mark & Recall spells.

I know that you can fast travel but it does not help me get that loot out of ruins without several trips to the ruin entrance and I can't count how many times that saved my ass in Vvardenfell. The best thing about mark and recall was I could mark a shop and sell off all my stuff which I had hoarded as too not raise my merchantile too high, but now its shop, fast travel, pick up stuff, fast travel, shop, fast travel, pick up stuff etc........

That would be because, a Morrowind style jinkblade would be horribly horribly broken. It'd basically allow guaranteed kills against anything not paralysis immune.

Even if they had more openended enchantment, paralysis would probably still be heavily restricted or verboten.

Actually, I take back what I said about lack of levitation.

My biggest gripe was the limited number of things you could do with NPCs. Even if you got their disposition at 100, you couldn't ask 'em out on a date, or get them to help you out in a dungeon, or get them to give you a place to sleep for the night. I mean, 100 is basically like good-friend status, right? Who wouldn't loan a couch to their best friend, if they needed one?
I also think the fact that they don't take stock of their goods inside their houses seems kind of silly. If I had a friend over, but suddenly every item of food, silver, and armor/weapon in my house just went missing, I would start to get suspicious, and more than likely lower my disposition with this new house guest. I think a small touch like that would have dramatically improved the game.

I also think vendors should get a little more real-world control over their inventory. IE: I steal everything out of Ognorf's house while he's sleeping or at the bar, and then sell it all right back to him. Don't you think, if you were Ognorf, even through the drunken stupor, you'd make some sense of it all? And maybe at least take all the stuff in your inventory and stash it back around the house? And then, to top it off, maybe sit at a chair and be more observant when I enter the house?

I think for the next game, where thievery is concerned, people should get a higher or lower "suspicion" level depending on how much they trust you. Kajiti, Argonians, and Bosmer start with already high suspicion levels, and get followed by city guards everywhere. It makes shop owners nervous when they're around, some even try to kick you out, just based on what other's say about you. When things go missing, and people see you around, they aught to be able to put 2 and 2 together.

I also think that for the next game, there should be some kind of relationship element to the game. If you're going to spend so much time in an "ever changing environment" why would your character be such a loner? Surely the vendor you keep coming back to might develop a crush on you.
Or surely when your fame hit 100, all the ladies in town would swoon for you.
It wouldn't even have to be very complicated a system. I just think a small touch like that could have a real difference on the game. I think it would be cool to get a vendor to start living in my house as well ( :P )

I think the general stupidity of the NPCs kind of ruins a lot of aspects of the game. It's what really defines it as still a single player game, instead of a fantasy role playing game.

I only want one to get my own back on bandits for all the times I've been killed by one bandit with a [&@%!] little iron dagger which repeatedly paralyses you until you die. Maybe instead of definitely paralysing them, it could have a chance of doing it, like the Daedric Banish effect on Mehrunes' Razor.

I've thought of another one, and that is the absurdly low character limit when naming your character. I realise that wanting to be called 'Secret Peter. Where is he hiding? In the cupboard, in the shed, in the hedge, in the shoe, down the lane? No, he is inside your mind' was a bit optimistic, but I was very disappointed when my Morrowind character Hawkwind Moon, Man Of Action couldn't be resurrected.

yeah i would have to say the lack of variation in character voices. i've only played oblivion from the elder scrolls series so i've nothing to compare it to, but i read in one game they were all different voices. understably oblivion is so big with SO many people they would hard pressed to record a different one for everybody but still... a little more would be nice.

i was convinced the gray fox was actually hieronymous lex in some completely bizarre twist of plot

There is no TES game to compare with really. None of the earlier have had voice acting, the dialouge is written.

The biggest letdown I had for Oblivion was the downloable content, excluding Knights of the Nine and the Shivering Isles. Many of those offical mods should have been added originally like the Wizard's Tower and Horse Armor.

The biggest letdown I have is the levelled enemies. I find that it takes a lot of the interest out of actually training and levelling.

In Morrowind, as my character levelled, he became stronger than enemies and so was easier able to defeat the strongest enemies, just from training and levelling. Now, the enemies are always as strong as my character, and it's VERY disappointing.

A close second would be the narrowing of skill sets. In Morrowind (can you tell I played Morrowind first), there were tons of skills to use and learn. (Maybe too many for non-RPG players, as this was the first RPG I got into, and it took a while to get used to that many skills).

These gripes aside, I still very much enjoy the game though.

On a similar note, I don't like the way the Elven races all have the same voices. The Dark Elves are meant to be cynical and world-weary, like they are in Morrowind, not snobby [&@%!] like the High Elves.

My biggest letdown is probaly the few things to do for a thief. There is one jewel shop, and then houses to plunder. Those of you who haven't delved into that, should know you only need alot of picks and then you can steal everything from everyhouse that's not key only.
And castles are just a matter of waiting and looking abit around, and you can rip every castle off.

It would be nice, however, if the castles had some hard-to-reach, well guarded areas, that needed very very good sneaking skills (Both ingame, and from the player) to access. Or, abillitiy to sneak into the White Gold Tower, again with high skills needed. I'd really like to visit the Emperors bed room.. if it is in the tower?

Such is my letdowns.

My biggest let down was the lack of improvements with Shivering Isles. Did anyone read the OXM for Shivering Isles?? Cause it said one bonus is the pez-dispensing enchantment bonuses that are available in Shivering Isles. NOT ONE!!!
