Today in History

This thread will serve the purpose of allowing users to remember events that happened, as the thread title suggests, this day in history. It could be 1000 years in the past, or just 5 minutes ago, but if it happened today, go ahead and bring it up.
The purpose here is for us to have a place to bring up these events, but not necessarily discuss them in great detail, as certain events are religious, political, or just controversial in nature. It is okay to say something like "America gained it's independence today", but it is not okay to discuss political ramifications of that event. Use your common sense and follow the forum rules. I have cleared this with the mods, but as with every thread, if they see it getting out of hand, they are within their rights to lock it. Got it?
So...What happened today in history?

I think I saw this come up in the General Discussion thread, but I wanted to share it here as well. There were multiple explosions at the Boston Marathon today. As far as I know, 2 bombs went off, at least one more was found. Two people were killed, with roughly 25 injured the last I heard.

I love that people are already using this as an anti-gun control message. "Gais, these people were hurt by bombs, not guns. That means guns are okay."
[&@%!] them.

Everyone who exploits death for political gain is a [&@%!]. That includes pro- and anti-gun people.
Though I must say that pro-gun people don't generally go around after a crisis demanding things

April 16, 2007: "Virginia Tech Massacre"
A lone gunman kills 32 people, wounding 17 more in a school shooting at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. It is the deadliest shooting by any single person in US history, and one of the worst school shootings to date. He attacked students in a residence hall (killing 2), before returning to his own dorm room, mailing tapes and journals to the news, and then proceeded to attack an academic building, killing 30 more, before shooting himself in the head.
Apart from the facts, this particular event holds certain meaning to me since I attended Virginia Tech (after the incident) and actually lived in the dorm where he started his shooting. The campus, and the Hokie community are a true example of how to handle these events. Never forget, remember the 32.

all_freed, the idea of this thread is to point things that happened on THIS day in history. I mean, it's entirely true that the world did not in fact end in April of last year, but the other things don't really seem tied to this day in particular.

Hey man, that almost offended me.
Refering to a nation as "them" on an international forum is a pretty stupid thing to do.

I was referring to events that took place 100 years ago and not the actual country as a whole, but either way I'm sorry if it didn't come off that I was trying to make a joke. For future reference, I never say anything with the intention of offending. Sometimes my sense of humour just doesn't work ever when combined with the Internet.

Stress on "almost". I can (usually) tell when someone's making a joke or not, but a lot of people can't. It was mostly the use of the present tense and the term "Germans" instead of "Nazis" that put me off. Jokes of any nature are fine in my book, but you still have to watch your wording. Just a lil' protip for the future.

On this date in 1939, Ted Williams hit his first career HR in the majors. When he retired, he had the 3rd most career home runs. Today he is tied for 18th with 521. His career was also interrupted by WWII (he served from '42-'46) and Korea ('52-'53) serving in the Navy and later the Marines as a fighter pilot and flight instructor.
