You would need to go into your laptop's network settings and set up a bridge on your Ethernet port. That tells the laptop to share the existing internet connection through the Ethernet port.

Generally speaking, Windows should automatically recognize Internet. If I understand correctly, you have a separate PC = Desktop that won't connect?
Seems a bit confusing, but if you have an extension cord from your laptop to the PC, there may be a problem. Perhaps I got it all wrong?

Well, you shouldn't really need to configure Internet settings, Windows finds them automatically. I'm with Windows 7 now, can't really remember XP, but there should be a problem solving? You get any specific notifications about what may be wrong?
And, as always, if you have a legitimate Windows - contact them. They are very customer friendly, and will help you in any way. Having updates up to date is also very important.
I think Lindai may be closest to the solution: you need to share your network. IPs can be a pain, and if you only have one connection for several computers, it may cause problems.
Best of luck, sincerely.
