The Hobbit Film Trilogy

Have you seen the movie? What version? What did you think?

All The Hobbit film discussion should go here.

I saw it in 48fps 3D and thought the brightly lit scenes (especially at the beginning) looked a little "behind the scenes" as someone put it. The cave scenes were amazing, especially everything with Gollum. Will be taking my wife to see it in the same format sometime this week!

So it's really going to be a trilogy? A trilogy of books (a total of 1008 pages) gets a trilogy of movies, but then a 305 page book also gets a trilogy of movies? I honestly don't know how they're going to make this work. That's like 100 pages a movie. :|

They have added a lot of things from Appendices Tolkien wrote after the LotR Trilogy (which is really one book in three parts, not three books) to tie the two stories together a bit better.

It works.

What doesn't work, are the dwarves. Half of them look like very short humans, while the other half has potatoes for noses and hair that could pass as tasteless home decoration.

Can we make this thread about Lord of the Rings and Tolkein's Legendarium in general?

Sadly, I need to wait a while before seeing the film. :(

We've had like 4 threads about Tolkien and related media before. I say let's just keep making more >_>

I intended to see The Hobbit on the weekend, but that fell through due to me not taking into account my sister's 13th birthday. :|

So now I'm seeing it tomorrow. I hope it's worth the wait!

You could go to the recently re-animated The Tolkein Thread

This one is just for discussion of The Hobbit movies.

I liked it. I went to see it in 2D. I'm not that fond of 3D.

3D can honestly go die in a hole.

Saw it in 2D here as well. I didn't really notice anything off about the framerate.

Yeah, it seemed fine to me. I didn't even know it was different until one of my friends that I went to see it with told me.

There were 11 year olds throwing sweets during the film. But that is a strike against those people and not the film.

They are only showing the faster frame rate in 3D, which is why neither of you noticed a difference.

Wow, well that's utter [&@%!]. Very few people besides young kids even like 3D, so for the 48FPS to be restricted to the 3D version was a dick move. Then again, this is Hollywood.

It was ace. I love the book. I love Tolkien and should be mad about the differences between the book and film. Alas, I am also a huge Peter Jackson fan, so I just find his work so spectacular. And also, Guillermo Del Toro as writer, how awesome is that.

There are a limited amount of theaters even capable of showing it in 48fps.

Damn, it seems all the big theaters have the equipment in Belgium, except the one in my city.

Anyway, as I said earlier: I liked it, but not as much as I liked the other movies. Also, there were a few scenes that I did not really like, the one with the Ork king for example. The chase and fight sequence felt a bit too 'Pirates Of The Carribean'-ish for my taste. But it's a great movie nonetheless and I can't wait on part two and three.

And I think it's about time I read those books. No, I have never read the LOTR/Hobbit books, before.

Either have I. Haven't seen the films in a while either.

I saw it in the normal ole 2D. I enjoyed the film, but I can't help but complain about some things. I felt that the movie is trying too hard to allude to scenes and themes in LotR. Like when
Spoiler:
Thorin is rushing at Azog. That's a pretty big allusion to Boromir, since it's basically a mirror of what had happened before. Also, they visit a lot of the places in LotR, like a few specific places the Fellowship went that had no significance, as well as Weathertop. I kinda wanted to see a lot of new stuff.
Also, the CGI and Animations weren't very good, as they appeared very cartoony in some scenes. I very much prefer actors playing these characters than some CG images. But other than that, I loved the movie, and can't wait to see the next one!

If we want to get technical, LoTR actually visits a lot of places, The Hobbit does. And yes, there are some similarities in how some action goes about.

Anyway, I liked the film, can't say I formulated that many issues with it. It is rather faithful to the book, though it did introduce some things that were never disclosed in the book.

I can't say my opinion is neutral though, as I am a huge LoTR fan, lol.

I've seen it on Saturday with some friends, in 3D.
It was a good movie, with a good balance of action and "calm", great landscapes (I loved Rivendell) and special effects
Spoiler:
even if I wanted to see more of Smaug;
I don't mind if they changed something, you can't make a movie 100% accurate to the book.

I agree with Frosty: how can they make a trilogy out of it?
(Or why didn't they make 6 movies for the Lord of the Rings? :P)

One of the funniest moments was with my friends when
Spoiler:
Gandalf saves the dwarves from the goblins with an explosion of white light and we all say "Wrath of God".

I actually found it cool that they didn't show too much of Smaug. It really added tension to the movie and it made the last scene so much more dramatic...
Spoiler:
when his eyes opened.

Just got back from seeing it an hour or two ago! Not in 48fps (our theatre didn't have that), but it was awesome anyway! I liked how it stayed mostly faithful to the book while at the same time including content that originally occurred behind the scenes. I can't say it was perfect, but I enjoyed it immensely, even if it was just for the thrill of being in Middle-earth again.

Just saw it today. Loved it and can't wait until next year for the next one.
Gollum has got to be one of the best movie/book characters ever.
And I agree with Abel. I liked that they didn't show Smaug.
Saw it in 2D. Wanted to see it in 3D (NOT HFR) but the showings were too late and none of my buses home would have been going anymore.
