I'm having trouble understanding this Ta'agra word from
the context in which it was first mentioned. I've googled "Rhojiit" and found that some people believe it to refer to "Sabretooth cats". Could anyone lend a hand?

Using context clues, I notice the Khajiit warriors were turned into Senche just before the term Rhojiit is used.
Senche are a specific form of Khajiit which resemble large four legged cats like tigers or lions, except more muscular and with an almost ape-like physiology. Often used as mounts by other Khajiit, actually. So yes, something like a saber cat from Skyrim.
I'd say your guess is pretty accurate.

I don't think "Rhojiit" is a direct translation of "sabretooth cats". The book implies that the Rhojiit devolved into sabretooths. Maybe it refers to the group of ancient Khajiit who were blessed by Alkosh?

It might, but the end result is much the same.
Perhaps Rhojiit were Alkosh's chosen few, perhaps even a type of Dragonborn, which would logically explain the curse to take their voices away. Their greatest weapons.
