Belfast City Council have confirmed that 'death row' dog Lennox has been put down.

Despite campaigners waging a lengthy battle to save the seven-year-old pet, the council ruled that Lennox was "an illegal pit-bull terrier type" and should be destroyed for public safety.

A statement from the council on Wednesday morning confirmed his death:

"The dog Lennox, an illegal pit-bull terrier type, has been humanely put to sleep. This was in accordance with the Order of the County Court which was affirmed by the Northern Ireland Court of Appeal."

"Whilst there is an exemption scheme to which dogs of this type (pit-bull terrier type) may be admitted as an alternative to destruction, there were no such measures that could be applied in this case that would address the concerns relating to public safety.

"The Council’s expert described the dog as one of the most unpredictable and dangerous dogs he had come across," the statement added.Worldwide protests were held in Lennox's honour around the world after his owner Caroline Barnes announced last week that she would no longer be fighting to save her pet. The Save Lennox Facebook page has over 100,000 "likes" and a petition to save the dog has over 200,000 signatures.

A candle-lit vigil for the dog was held outside Belfast council buildings last night, and on Tuesday the First Minister of Northern Ireland waded into the row, urging the council to reconsider killing the pet, instead suggesting that the dog should be re-homed.

Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer, and Victoria Stilwell, host of 'It's Me Or The Dog' , had offered to pay the expenses to relocate Lennox from Northern Ireland and bring him to the US to a sanctuary and freedom.Belfast City Council have received a number of angry emails after the publication of Lennox's plight. The dog was confiscated from his owners more than two years ago after Belfast council officials judged the dog to be a breed banned under the UK's Dangerous Dog Act (DDA).

The council warned against members of the public engaging in abusive behaviour following Wednesday's statement, writing:

"Over the past two years, Council officials have been subjected to a sustained campaign of abuse including threats of violence and death threats. The Council has been in ongoing contact with the PSNI in relation to that.

"The Council regrets that the court action was necessary but would emphasise that the safety of the public remains its key priority."

A statement from Lennox's owners was posted on the Save Lennox Facebook page last night. It read:

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all again for your messages of support. We are sorry to say at the present time Belfast city council seem to be intent on killing our boy.

"Despite previous assurances otherwise, we have been denied the opportunity to say goodbye. We have also been told that we cannot collect his body and bring Len home. We have been informed however that we will receive 'some' ashes in the mail."

Take a look at a video from the Save Lennox campaigners below.
:| [&@%!] this City. They say it's a dangerous Dog, a Warden says it's one of the most Violent dogs she's ever seen. a Video came out of her letting the Dog lick her face. Oh, and here's a good one, workers at the Council are making Dog noises when people phone up to ask if it's been put down, [&@%!] [&@%!].

That dog had to die. What if, hear me out, what if, it was released it could kill I don't know thouands? Hundreds? Nobody? We just can't tell, man. To close to call. And you see a dog lovingly licking her face, I see a dog tasting her before eating her. Had to be done, think of the safety of the public that hates Belfast Council now. I'm sure they'll thank the council later.

I actually remember that from when I was a kid. Well, not "that" as in Lennox, but "that" as in the absolute ass-buggered way they treat pitbulls over there.

When I was little, I used to spend every summer in Britain, staying with my family. Over here in the states, we owned a pitbull, and I kept begging my dad to bring him along on holidays, so we could take him for walks and let him play with Grandma's dogs. But noooo "they don't like pitbulls over here".

Frakking fascists.

Good night, sweet prince.
What if, hear me out, what if, it was released it could kill I don't know thouands?
Would that he did. Would that he did.

They're not giving back the body, didn't let them say Goodbye, and they'll only get "Some" of the Ashes.

Can we vote to ban all Belfast politicians? So if any are found, we can lock them away and euthanize them? Clearly, Belfast politicians are a "dangerous breed", and experts say they exhibit highly unpredictable behavior.

The public must be protected from the BCC.

You know what REALLY grinds my gears? Lennox wasn't even a pitbull. He was a bulldog mix who just "looked" like a pitbull.

"Well, sho' yo Honah. That fella what he hanged, turns out he was an I-talian boy. But he had hisself a mighty dark TAN, yo Honah, sos we naturally reckoned we c'ud lynch im, just like with a propah Negro!"

Plus, why didn't the council let anyone take Lennox off their hands? Plenty of people offered to house Lennox, at their expense- hell, I probably would, too, since I'm going to be in the market for a new dog soon. That's not just bureaucratic evil, that's downright malicious.

They probably wanted to make an example of Lennox, what with the whole "workers at the Council are making Dog noises when people phone up to ask if it's been put down" part. I mean, the First Minster, the man in charge of the province told them not to do it, and they did it anyway.

It disgusts me that they killed that dog over its breed. That's just pure stupidity at its greatest.

A pit-y about the pooch, but this is the real abomination the story brings to light. The fetishization of pets in Western culture is one of the most disturbing signs of degeneracy yet.

Don't knock the fetish till you've tried it.

And it's not about the fact Lennox was a pet. It's about the ass-backward pet control laws in the UK, and the fact that the Belfast City Council stepped way beyond all reason and intent in the manner in which they handled things. It's not a "fetishization of pets". It's a condemnation of cruel injustice and out-of-control authority figures. The law needs to be changed. The murderers need to be held accountable. Justice needs to be served.

"Destroying a dog that had no history of aggression is folly and shames society"-Peter Robinson, First minister of Northern Ireland, and former Terrorist. When a [&@%!] Terrorist thinks something shames society, you done goofed.

Ignoring the backward canine racism,
It's disturbing that they didn't even let the owners have the closure of seeing their pet or the entirety of their pet's remains while receiving it through the impersonal mailing system, like it isn't someone's friend being shipped in a letter...
...apparently they need to hold onto these dangerous ashes for the public's safety...in case someone can't control their addiction to snort dog

Clearly you think that's the key message of the story, but I don't. Pets in the West have more affection and resources showered on them through the multibillion dollar animal services sector than people do nowadays.

All while crazy old cat ladies, enviro-"mental" activists and disaffected college students wage a two-year, multithousand dollar harassment campaign against the fine folks on the commission, who only have the public safety at heart (and apparently, a national law called the "Dangerous Dog Act"). All that energy and money could have gone toward staving off the soul-crushing hunger of African kids for a few months, or more precisely, the food shipments would have been intercepted by African tribal warlords, who would then recruit the starving kids into their armed forces, and then feed them the charity rations. Besides, the UK already bans all sorts of other dangers to the public, like drugs, firearms, blades over three inches, and so on. The public deserves to be protected from maulings by rabid canines, as well. Criminals are smuggling these animals in against the law and giving them shelter. Lennox got plush treatment: a two-year stay in a kennel while its appeals were going through. That's what, 15 in dog years? Even humans don't get 15 years on death row, so don't try to tell me it was treated inhumanely. In conclusion, if pitbulls must be tolerated at all, place them behind safe zoo fences, like we do with other dangerous beasts.

It wasn't even a pitbull, it was mixed breed. The dog did nothing so it did not deserve to die. Look at this, who's the real animal.

What they don't tell you (because no one will believe it) is that Lennox ate all of the leprechauns. That's why he was executed.
