It is often said that true Americans wave the stars stripes at every party, paint their cars red, white, and blue, and generally have to remind everyone else that they're American whenever they go abroad. True Americans barbecue, get fat, go to church, and wage war like bosses.


Nay! I say, true Americans worship the Sun God! True Americans have brown skin! True Americans build pyramids! True Americans are nomadic and use stone age technology!

True Americans are Ancient Egyptian.

What is a true American to you?

Note: What is a true "anything" to you, is the real question.

Any citizen of the United States of America. Patriotism is optional stupidity.

A true American is someone born in America. Simple as this.

A true [insert nationality] is anyone who is very familiar with and a part of the culture of said nation. It doesn't matter where you've been born, it matters where you belong, and where you feel you belong.

Why can't I as a Canadian, or anyone from Cuba or Mexico or Guatemala or Guyana, call themselves American, just as a Bulgarian or a Frenchman or a Serb or a Belgian is a European?

I wondered the same thing.

Some citizens of this country hate it with a passion, hardly American. Anyone who loves this land, calls it there own. Anyone with whie and blue, as well as red flowing through their veins. Anyond who shouts out to there government when they want change. IT is anyone willing to sacrifice,to fight for the right to party, that's an American.

The best part of being English is moaning about England. Complaining about [&@%!] is what gets most of us up in the morning, and I always find the stereotypical American 'we're the best' attitude hilarious in contrast.

But yes, I agree, a true American is a citizen of the United States of America. Not from anywhere on the continent, north or south. I think you could call yourself a North/South American, but unless you live in the USA, not just American.

You wouldn't hate, unless it were true, RH. Let's not have a "I'm from the UK, and America is so overrated debate."

I see nothing wrong with feeling and displaying an actual sense of pride in one's country, be they American or British. I just don't agree when they take it overboard like many do, or when it severely clouds their judgement.

My point was that the stereotypical Englishman (someone like David Mitchell) is pretty much the antithesis of the stereotypical American when it comes to things like patriotism, complaining, etc. and I find that amusing.
I guess you can choose get offended by that if you've had a quiet day or something, and are desperately looking for something to get sensitive about.

We only think we are the best because it keeps us going. Imagin you live in a world where everyone tells you your country is trash, that it is a joke. Patriotism is what binds us together, so sorry for being American.

A true American upholds and defends both the letter and the spirit of the U.S. Constitution. Best historical gov't document. Better than Magna Carta.

Hmmmm, I would disagree, but I think that would start a bit of an argument. I'll just say that I think we're the best, because I genuinely do think we are the best country in the world. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else, and to me, that's enough to make it the best. It's an opinion people, if you don't share it, fine.
