Should Scotland remain a part of Great Britain or should it become independent?

I think Scotland is already largeley independent. It has its own parliament, traditions and culture. I don't see why Scotland should leave Britain however this topic is about your views. :?:

I think that, if Scotland votes for independence, there is nothing that should stop them.

However, it would probably be logical to remain under the British Crown, as part of the commonwealth, and perhaps even stay with the GBP.

I think it should remain British. Scotland has been part of the UK for over 300 years. It couldn't cope with being a separate country. Alex Salmond seems to have this idea that we could support our economy on oil. In Africa, countries are typically reliant on one export. Where does that get them?

I don't think Scotland has a strong enough economy for independence, unless they make full use of the oil wells in the North Sea.
I would also love to see an independent Cornwall, but they have no chance of getting an economy. All the have is tourism, unless they really focus on that, and perhaps reopen the old tin mines.

One of the main things that the pro-Independence group goes on about is the fact that Scotland has to pay more to Westminister than any other country (proportionate to population size). What they forget is that we get free prescriptions and other things that those in the other parts of the UK don't get. It also works both ways.

Scotland can do what it wants, but I seriously doubt they would actually end up fully splitting from the rest of us. I really see no point of it all, we are all the same people anyway... just the accents get weirder and weirder the further you go from the South-East.

Being part of Britain has it's benefits, a few of which POMC has already underlined. It's funny how riled up people get over one word; 'independence' despite it being something that could ultimately make Scotland collapse on itself.

It works as a good publicity stunt for the parties that say it though, gets all the national pride lovers on their side.

I doubt that independence would come without a full fiscal and economic union.

It is just a ploy so that fish can rule the world. Alex Salmon(d). Nicola Sturgeon. I'm sure they have an Alexander Pike. It's a plot for fish to rule the world.

Some people hate the English. I don't! They're just [&@%!]! We, on the other hand, are colonized by [&@%!]! We can't even find a decent culture to be colonized by!

Question: does Scotland really want to be the next Canada? Really, guys? Really?

At least Canada takes care of the average person--or tries to, anyhow.

I think Scotland should do whatever 66% of the population wishes to do. I don't necessarily think it'd be wise, at this point in time, but all the power to them if they want to.

Could someone provide more details on the history of this?

Ah Doros the [&@%!] start returns to yet another topic.

Scotland should keep joint with us simply because of the fact that it doesn't have a good enough economy, also the United Kingdom wouldn't be very united if it was just England, Wales and that tiny little bit of Ireland up there.

Both? But in recent history, I mean. I know all about your past.

The Independence thing happened relatively recently, excluding the Jacobites. The idea has only been around for five years.

Scotland has oil?

Hurry up and declare independence so we can swoop in and bring Democracy to your country.

Yes. Supposedly we have a lot of barrels in the North Sea.

And we have Democracy. And we want to keep our free healthcare.

Dissent you said? Communism? Oh, that won't do at all.

Well, Scotland does have a Socialist past and Marx once said that Socialism is the first stage of Communism.

In actuality, I think if the majority of Scottish people want to be independent, that they should be allowed to self determine. The actuality benefits of independence, however, are (at least from Ireland's experience), at least at century of economic turmoil and struggle to establish as an independent country. Which should be an option. I'm not Scottish, ergo, I don't get a vote in Scotland's independence.

The majority are against it, I believe.
