In a shocking display symptomatic of the patterns of institutional cannibalphobia so prevalent in America's legal power structure, Miami police today shot and killed an unarmed black man. His only crime? Utilizing natural resources in a non-heteronormative fashion. The media has been quick to sensationalize non-standard lifestyle choices made by the victim- recreational drug use, refusal to submit to patriarchal standards of "clothing use"- and, of course, implicitly accepts, without the slightest hint of critical self-reflection, the shockingly medieval idea that dietary habits which lie outside "the norm" are so sick, disgusting, and "evil", that those who choose to practice them can (should! Must!) be shot dead, out of hand.

If the rest of Florida is anything like Miami, then you're 100% correct. Unfortunately, they still attempt it.

The drugs allegedly involved were a speculation, I believe, and quite hastily assumed at that. Methinks someone's trying to turn this into a "cocaine's bad, mmmk" story. Other than that, I don't really have any opinion beyond my original reaction, "He tried to eat the face of a living person. That doesn't sound productive for anyone."

On a serious note, none of the articles really go into substantive detail about the man the police shot. They do hint, though, that he was supposedly on LSD (acid). To anyone who doesn't know/understand, there is no [&@%!] around with someone on acid; if the officer felt his life was in danger, he was in the right to shoot him.

My stance is, because the facts given are unclear, and because (more importantly) I wasn't there, I can't give a definite opinion on it. In cases like these, though, I tend to give the officer the benefit of the doubt.

The officer wasn't in danger, the homeless guy was. His face was getting eaten. The officer warned, warned, shot, (after crazy wouldn't stop) shot again, etc.

Either way, someone's life was in danger, the man was clearly deranged (at best), and the officer felt that deadly force was required. All I can say is that, given the lack of details, it's wrong to second-guess the officer based on current information (to those that have been/are).

If I were the officer, I would have shot him partly because he was eating a guy's face, and partly because I'm paranoid of zombies.

Freedom of choice... as long as he wasn't hurting anyone... how do we know he didn't ask for his face to be eaten...??? Did anyone even bother to ask? What if it was just a mistake, and he forgot the safe word?

This isn't "cannibalism".

"Cannibalism" consists of consuming the flesh of the dead. Consuming the flesh of the living is "zombieism". The moral of this story is ... if you don't want to get shot in the head like a zombie then don't act like a zombie ...

The officer was entirely correct in his course of action, given the information he would have had, namely the fact that one guy is gnawing at the face of another chap...and yes, cannibalism is technically 'MURDER, with the intention of consuming the corpse', a person eating a dead body that they didn't kill is necrophagy.

... and eating someone alive is still ZOMBIEISM ... don't be a zombie ...

Zombieism isn't a word.
