Texture can't be found

So I finally decided to have a go at making a simple mod, but I'm having a problem with a texture. It works fine until I rename the texture, at which point the item in the game loses the texture. This seems to suggest that the problem is with the texture name. I used Texture Replacer to replace the original texture in the nif file of the object with the new, renamed one, but it still seems the game can't find it.

Did you save the nif file again using the new texture name? What does nifskope show, the new or the old texture name?

I haven't actually worked out how to get Nifskope to show the texture, that's why I was using Texture Replacer, which does show the new texture.
EDIT: Managed to find the texture in Nifskope, and yes, it's correct.
EDIT2: Looks like something had gone wrong with the texture itself.

Does the item look purple in the game, or is it totally transparent, or what? Also, make sure you set it to create mipmaps for things that'll get rendered in 3d, but not for textures used by the UI (like item icons).

It seems to be mostly fixed now. It was dark purple, then it went to black, now it's either a bit glossy or a bit dark depending on conditions, which probably means the normal map needs adjusting. It seems a bunch of problems were being caused by underscores in the file name.
