Ignoring the main quest

Oblivion, deadra, suicidal guards... not really my cup of tea. So, how many of you completely ignore the main quest? Alternatively, if it can't/shouldn't be ignored, at what level should one attempt it?

The Wiki is confusing in that regard. On the one hand, it suggest that "Find the heir" should be saved for later and then again saying that attempting it and the subsequent "Breaking the Siege of Kvatch" at anything above level 2 makes it almost impossible to preserve the guards. (do they not level?)

You can ignore the main quest completely. That's no problem. I do that until I am at least level 17 to get the best sigil stones out of oblivion. As long as you don't close the first Oblivion gate at Kvatch, there won't be opening other gates.

I have never started the main quest. 3rd character and 14th lvl.

I got Martin to Cloud Ruler Temple. Since then I've been taking a long break from doing the main quest. No problems so far.

I've been going back and forth. Doing a little of the main quest, and then just exploring on my own and doing some of the side questes for a while. I have a kind of related question: the main quest does not requier you to close all the oblivion gates, just the ones in the main quest path. If I close the Great Oblivion gate at the end of the the main quest and finish the main quest, will all the remaining gates disappear?

Yes they will. Unfortunately :(

My first characters I only broke the siege of Kvatch part I and II (didn't talk to Martin though) (for the cuirass), but on my most recent one I did enough to get all the Oblivion Gates opening up :)

I guess I'll save closing the great oblivion gate till the end when I get bored of closing all the other gates :)

Wait, i thought the Great Oblivion Gate was in Kvatch and the Battle of Bruma. So you can just leave the fight and go do something else while everyone else is fighting for Bruma's survival?

I did the Seige of Kvatch p1 and 2, and now i have Martin, Jaffure, and Adoring Fan in my Bruma house while i do the DB and Mage's Guild.

My latest character is level 18 and I haven't worked on the main quest yet other than going to Chorrol and getting the update to go to Kvatch.

We'll see how that goes hehe.

That's my plan too. I only went to Chorrol for the free horse anyway. :D

Having completed the game I prefer now to avoid the quest. Although it has some goodies, they're not worth it entirely. If I ever do, I'll wait until I'm at the better end of the scale before attempting it. The Oblivion Gates are harder at higher levels but the items, armour, weapons and Sigil Stones are worth the pounding headache. ^_^

Right now I'm just practicing Necromancy in Anvil and doing some side jobs to keep the money rolling in. I might consider giving vampirism another try as well.

I think he meant he'll put off that mission until he closes the rest of the gates. Once the Great Gate opens you only have a certain amount of time before the Siege Crawler exits into Cyrodiil and destroys Bruma. However this only occurs when you begin the mission and make your way to the site; like any mission, you can put it off until you're ready.
