Personally, I haven't played the series, but I borrowed my friend's copy of ME2. Should I get ME1 then play ME2, or could I get to satisfactorily ME3 without 1? And ME3 is coming out tomorrow! Yay!

I've been trying to find a copy of the Xbox version of ME1 (it's a controller 'thang). Cue me in if you know where to actually find one!

Wonder if people here know of the immense controversy over ME3, what with having Day 1 DLC again, and said DLC being needed to conclude the story.
Big time fans are up in arms over it, and I personally won't be buying the game since greedy EA aren't distributing it over Steam.

We did have a fairly large Mass Effect thread around somewhere. Cam started it, if I remember rightly.
Anyway, I think I've made my thoughts on the game clear (EA are ABSOLUTE SCUM and I'd sooner eat caramel than give them another penny) and it's a shame, because I genuinely enjoyed the first two ME games. Of course I'm expecting ME3 to be rubbish even if I do get it so it doesn't bother me much.

Having started with ME2 (which I enjoyed immensely), I wish I had played ME1 first. ME2 makes lots of references to characters and lore that was established in the first game, and I had only dimly put together the major pieces of lore by the end of ME2.

You're talking about the special character? Video gaming titan TotalBiscuit did a
video on the ME3 issues.
EDIT: superfluous 'the' - my bane.

From the looks of it, it looks fantastic. I'm actually really glad I don't have to go through all of that Origin BS.

l2search birthday girl. Why are you expecting it to be rubbish, though, if you enjoyed the first two?
I'm not getting ME3 on the 9th because money/time,
(Mostly money) but I'm gonna pretend it's down to this boycott thing and my TOTAL OUTRAGE with EA's underhanded tactics and stuff.
And TotalBiscuit also done a follow-up
Mailbox vid. Total of 45 minutes of talking, woo.

Amazon.com, naturally. I had it ordered it for the Xbox; never played the series.

I find plenty of copies of ME1 and 2 at Gamestop

Based on demo experience, feedback, endings and on the fact that ME2 was [&@%!].
I enjoy the games almost 100% but ME3 is gonna be a rubbish (but fun) game.
I'll still play ME3 but I won't pay for it.

Meh, thats you opinion. I think you are a minority though. I have enjoyed it very much so far.

Look at the Bioware forums. It's all over it.

I thought the Day 1 DLC controversy was the most well known thing about the game by now.

What's its purpose?

To discreetly up the game's price to £50 like how the big devs have been aiming to increase it to for yonks now.

But really, this is EA we're talking about. It's the same company that tried to make selling used video games illegal in the US. What did you expect from them?

I saw the trailer and I think it was too much for me. Where has gone all the subtlety? I'm not saying ME1 was completely subtle, but come on, from ME1 I never expected the series to turn into this space opera cheap Micheal Bay crap... ME2 started to go in that direction, but I was ready to give the benefit of doubt. While I was not vehemently persecuting people who were warning us about how ME would turn to crap because of Bioware getting with EA, I thought they were exaggerating the consequences. Even in my moderation I was wrong. But I guess that's the direction video games are following. We're not like back in the days when it was considered a pastime for nerds and lowlives, now increasingly more people buy consoles and so developers must appeal to people who might not like games that play too much like games, people who prefer their games to look like (crappy) movies.

On the strength of the demo, I pre-ordered ME3. I don't expect it to be perfect, but I am looking forward to kicking the reapers in their daddy bags one more time. I haven't played many games in recent years that didn't disappoint in some way.
Stendarr is correct about the direction games are taking but that's life. I fully expect that there are going to be less and less games out there that appeal to me. Once ME3 is out I am not aware of any game that has been announced that is a must buy.
On your original post I would say play ME first then ME2 as it will make a little more sense.

Yeah I knew about the Day 1 DLC. But I didn't knew it was required to finish the storyline, if that's the same one you're talking about.
This is ridiculous in so many levels that I seriously hope this isn't true. Greedy [&@%!]....

I haven't heard anything about it being critical to the storyline, but the astronomical importance of the DLC's subject means that if you don't buy it, you don't experience the full story. I didn't watch all of Biscuit's video because even he can't hold my attention for 20 minutes, but I heard him mention that in the bit I saw.

Out of curiosity, how much extra is the DLC?
