Time to start over... but where to keep all the loot?

Thanks to all the info on the Wiki and lots of helpful posts here, I think I'm starting to get the hang of this game.
I think the time is nearing when I will restart with a better idea of what I'm doing. I mean Jeez, I payed 500 bob for a lousy Paint Horse when (a) I could get one for free apparently in a quest I completed right after! and (b) I had no idea about the quick travel feature. I'm pretty sure I even purchased my first few weapons and armour instead of just joining the arena/fighters guild for some free loot.

Talk about redundant!
There's one thing I've also been meaning to do. How safe is it to store items on the dead bodies of NPC's or in obscure areas. e.g. I'd like to use the sewer in the Market district as a base early on because I noticed the following: I killed some bandits there, picked up their loot, got encumbered so I dropped some and some more I left because I didn't want. Surprisingly, when I came back a couple of days later, everything was still there,
even though some other bandits were on site. So, short of buying a house, which I simply can't afford right now, how safe are the following locations:
1. In the Waterfront District, there's a nice abandoned shack right behind where you meet the first Doyen. Inside, next to one of the cots is a chest that is always empty. Alternatively, I've dropped stuff on the floor and come back to find it intact.
2. As mentioned above, there is a very small room with cots in the Market district sewers. I've left stuff lying around for days unintentionally and come back and found it as is. Good strategy or was it just luck?
3. What about various camp grounds etc. in the wilderness?
4. Finally, the most promising location is the masoleum from "Unfriendly Competition". Should I risk storing stuff there? I have the key afterall, right? In fact, if cots were an inventory item, I'd place one right there and make it my home - I'm not afraid of the dead.

WOW! Just started over and the difference even within the first few minutes of play has been phenomenal! I'm a seriously tough bastage atm using a custom class (Magic spec + miscellaneous, non-magic major skills) with tonnes of endurance and strength. The latter's because I'm the nice and slow type player who doesn't mind getting hit a couple of times. Alright... Alright... You got me. I just can't dodge an attack for the life of me so I need all the health and payback power I can muster.
I'm also counting on stealth + marksmanship (both major skills but I don't intend to exploit either) to at least give me an upper hand before first contact. Often, the bad guy is dead before he even reaches me. This is gonna be fun!
[edit]Scratch that. Still levelling up too fast. Time for a drastic change of strategy. How does this class sound:
Specialization: Stealth
Attributes: Endurance + Strength
Major Skills: Hand-to-Hand, Blunt, Heavy Armour, (I'll be using light armour and bladed weapons) Illusion, Mysticism, Conjuration and Alteration. (Haven't cast a single spell along any of those lines yet)
To level, I'd have to fall back on some hand-to-hand I guess?[/edit]

well none of the areas will be safe if you ask me. most chests and bodies respawn within 3 days. notice you said you came back a couple of days later. that means 2 days not 3. if i were you i would try to find a cheap house in bravil. i think they are cheap there.

Firstly, I think the shack in Waterfront District is the cheapest, but by far the smallest.
And with the class..
I think, that you should use a kind of battlemage/spellsword/sorceror rather than a stealth based marksman thing. those fields which you have discribed for your char is more fitting a heavy caster such as the above mentioned, than a stealther.
But if you're gonna make a stealther, if you're gonna restart another time, i'd say:
Attributes: Agility & Speed
Major Skills: Sneak, Security, Blade, Light Amor, Hand-to-Hand, Illusion (For stealth and cameleon) and Marksman/Speechcraft/Destruction at your choice.
My stealthing-psyco massmurdere is prominient, to a certain degree, at theese skills.
PS: Hand2Hand is really cool, so much more awesome to kill a full-armored orc with a battleaxe the size of your gran, only by using your hand. And, a bonus, you can actualy keep someone up in the air by punching from below, looks awesome!

Stuff you drop on the ground will not disappear. Only things you leave in containers you don't own.

I had played morrowind enough to think that oblivion shouldn't be too bad. I am on my third character and have run into the levelling problem once again. Not complaining here just trying to give you some insight into the situations that occur beyond your control. I actually love the game just don't seem to be to good at it. Finally, even after reading a lot of threads and most of the wiki; I just decided to play the best I can my way.(I took the wiki hint to stop sleeping and started working on skills)

Well the latest attempt is looking interesting. I went with stealth as a specialization but most of my major skills are magic with only marksmanship, hand-to-hand and armourer as the extras.
On the one hand, some 4-5 quests in and quite a few bad guys later and I still haven't levelled up. (which is a good thing right?) Instead I'm building up skills across the board to levels I had never seen even at level 6. (highest I reached on my first run-through before deciding to start over) My health and carrying capacity are also ridiculous thanks to a Red-Guard + Warrior sign + Strength/Endurance major attributes combo. IIRC, my strength was around 325 and my health 160... at the start of the game! The stealth specialization means that even though security, sneak, etc... are minor skills, they are increasing relatively easily. (I use them a lot!) Finally, though marksmanship is a major skill, it increases quite slowly anyway, even when I pretty much use it on most enemies. I use it as my primary level up method and it still takes more than a week to level up apparently.
On the other, destruction, being neither a major skill, nor a specialization, nor something that Red Guards are particularly adept at, is stagnating and I'm having to contrive situations to use the fireball. I dislike this quite a bit and if anyone knows of a way to alter the major skill list of my character without restarting, that would be great!

As regards to your storage issues...download a house mod! I know it's not exactly lore friendly...but alot of house mods now just add the house(maybe a little quest involved) and nothing else to it. No special items, or maybe just a few gold here and there..
www.tessource.net is great resource for mods, i would suggest having a look if your interested

Interesting. I'll look into it if I the whole "living off the land" bit gets old. It's kinda fun not knowing where you're going to sleep early on. And now that I've verified that items on the ground neither disappear nor are picked up by other NPC's (or at least it seems so) I'm seriously considering going without a house for quite a while.
Still, it's helpful to find out about all the mods. The common basement concept in particular, while again a bit of a stretch, seems very user-friendly for late game loot-management. Thanks...

Actually I think Simplicia the Slow ate some of my alchemy ingredients once
(I store my things on the statues in the market district early on)

Well, food is a different thing, since NPCs actually eat. There is no need for them to pick up weapons, armor, books and other stuff, though. After all, they don't use it, they don't sell it.

Well, they'll pick up weapons, but only if there's fighting going on.
(I have to admit it's funny to see beggars running around with the end game weapons

)
As for the storage...can anybody confirm/deny this one?
SPOILERS
The fighter's guild quest that sends you to Water's Edge a second time (under the influence of Hist Sap), can you store things on the bodies there? I came back a couple weeks later and the bodies were still there...I dumped a glass cuirass on one to see if it's still there next time I pass through.

I must be missing something. Are you saying that you can hide your items somewhere and then start a new game alltogather with a new character and then go to that location and fing the items from the previous game? I though that when you start a new game everything will get reset.

It will be, things from different games don't carry over.

No eleyan. I was trying to find a reliable, cheaper (and more RP-appropriate) way to store loot other than buying a house.

RP appropriate eh? Well then I guess mine is out XD

On the 360, my stuff always disappears in containers I don't own within three days. I know three places where it's safe to store stuff in containers that don't belong to you.
1) Chest in Black Rock Cave where you are guaranteed to a get 2 enchanted items, one worn, one weapon.
2) Arch-Mage Travern's Night Stand, I've left stuff in it, from the beginning game, and I'm well into it about 400 hours and it's still there.
3) You can do the two side quests with Mazoga the Knight, and get the free White Stallion Lodge as a house.
Hope that helps.

I meant appropriate for the character I'm trying to play. He's a loner by choice and prefers the outdoors to comfy city living. I would take the Imperial city hovel if it didn't cost so much for so little. Maybe later?

I see. I did that once in one of the chests in the Mage's Guild . I put most of my heavy items there so I can run back and forth and loot a fort I just finished. I couldn't do it in one trip because there was a lot of heavy armor I found, so I dumped everything I hade except basic armor and one sword in that chest on the second floor of the Leyawiin Mage's guild. Its on an office room on the right hand of the desk if you are facing the desk. I put everything there and my carried weight went doun from 240 to 70 and then I wend back and forth for 2 or three trips looting the place and selling the items to the shops. Once I was done I wend back to the Mage's guid and recovered all my Items. I hope this helps

if you are trying to keep from the levelling problem again, punch a guard and go to jail, and if you WANT to buy a house(my waterfront must have aobut 300 items in it) just loot bandit areas, and thaat way u get about 3k every ten places at about level 10

So you guys say that storing items in a house you own is safe huh? I have been trying to find a safe place. I stored 4 potions in a drawer in Benarius Manor in Anvil after I completed the quest.
Two of the potions are gone, but maybe that was a fluke.
What do you think?

Good to hear.I just bought another house in Leyawiin and plan on keeping my main stash there.
This game is way beyond good!

I don't bother with houses. I feel more at home in Dunbarrow Cove and Deepscorn Hollow. At least I have some nice roomies there
