As a person who likes playing Argonians I have been disappointed with the lack of underwater attractions in Skyrim. Yes I realise we are in Skyrim and geographically there aren't many large lakes or rivers, but I still would have liked a bit more to see under the waves. Even the coastline near Windhelm and Winterhold seems to be nothing but barren sand. So far i've found a few dungeons with some under water chests, and that's really about it. Maybe I just haven't looked hard enough. So, has anyone found anything cool or interesting under water?

Spoiler:
After emerging from the cave exit of Bleak Falls Barrow, run down the hill directly into the lake to find a submerged burial chamber. On the opposite end of the lake, near the Lady Stone, is a shipwreck submerged all but for a couple feet of mainmast.
I'll mark down any future neat finds for inclusion into this thread.
There is also a greater variety of aquatic fauna (including insects) in Skyrim versus Oblivion.

Thanks a lot for that. I knew there would be some, it's my fault for not looking hard enough. And I'm doing the same, making an Argonian explorer. I want to have the water ways of Skyrim completely mapped out.

It's still completely entertaining. I like the glacial structures north of Dawnstar. They're so beautiful, it's intimidating. From miles away they look like nothing, and up close, immense, like they could sink the Titanic. Alteration in general really helps. Magelight has some cool properties. It will basically sift through water likes it nothing, so you can see how deep it is. Not practical, but it's neat. Detect life can search for Slaughterfish, and sometimes (possibly?) salmon. I swear it picked up regular fish a couple of times. I'm also yet to find anything in the big Falkreath lake, but it's certainly neat. And the waters in the Reach are a fun ride.

Waterfalls people, waterfalls. Spend some time playing around waterfalls and you will find interesting caves and hidden chests!
Also, in my opinion, there are even to many shipwrecks along the coast between Solitude and Winterhold.

I agree, I haven't really seen much to reward underwater explorers in Skyrim.
Spoiler:
The various shipwrecks generally have some underwater things to find, mostly chests and barrels though. Notably, the spot Pilgrim's Trench has several shipwrecks all fairly deep underwater. But, other than the previously mentioned burial chamber and shipwreck in Lake Ilinalta, the only other thing I've found of much interest is the skeleton tied to the stone block at the bottom of the small pond at Darkwater Pass's upper entrance. Most of the dungeons that have a pool or body of water do seem to have a chest somewhere at the bottom, notably Lower Steepfall Burrow (always fun to take the plunge from Steepfall Burrow), Frostmere Crypt (on the way out), Broken Oar Grotto, Reachwater Rock, Robber's Gorge, and Kagrenzel , but that generally seems to be about it. Behind the waterfall near the Word Wall in Ustengrav is a chest with a guard. The small pond in Bloated Man's Grotto does have something, but not much IIRC.
Of course, it does seem that surface areas of water tend to provide a bit more to find, such as the "Lady of the Lake", the giant Mudcrab statue, the lovely waterfalls (both above and below ground), the mudcrab temple (or whatever you want to call it) near Morthal, the various ponds at "clearings", some of the islands in the Sea of Ghosts (such as the island northwest of Solitude containing a few gold veins, and a skeleton fallen on a flagpole).
BTW, has anyone started a general topic for unmarked locations discovered yet?

I spend a lot of time swimming around the ocean, and yeah, it's very disappointing, what with the crap textures and invincible slaughterfish and general lack of anything to see. But there's still some interesting spots. My personal favorite wreck is at Pilgrims Trench, not far from Winterhold. Won't spoil it for you if you haven't been there yet.
Also, if you're on PC, you can always remove the world boundaries and go for some really long swims. You can travel to High Rock or Morrowind, or even try and make it to the Summerset Isles. The open ocean just beyond the glaciers is a real sight; I've got a campsite or two on top of the northernmost glaciers.

Zelda taught me to always look behind waterfalls.

Huh, that's neat.
Weird thing is, just the other day I was at the very peak of Throat of the World and looked in the direction that Cyrodiil *should* be and there was nothing but ocean! (PS3)

Am I the only one scared that while swimming in the deep sea a giant sea serpent will appear and devour me? Nope? Oh well..

Speaking of aquatic explorations...why is it that none of the hot springs "burn" you when you traipse through them?

Well seeing how there are a bunch of hunters lounging around in the spring pools one can only assume that the water isn't hot enough to burn.

Started the new year with an argonian. That makes me an antiStormcloak amphibian.
