Wuuthrad and Ysgramor's Shield

Spoiler:
Does anyone know why these two items can't be smithed (improved)? Is it because they're listed as artifacts as oppose to weapons, or is it a bug?
Thanks.

I don't think it is a bug. However, you can smith other artifacts, so I'm not sure.

There are several items that cannot be improved at the grindstone or armor table. In at least one case it is probably a bug (the highest level variant of the Nightingale Blade cannot be improved while the others can) while in other cases it may be deliberate, such as the Ebony Blade (which has an associated unmarked quest to improve the weapon's enchantment rather than the base damage). So I cannot say for sure.

Hmm...kinda disappointing. I would love using either of those for rp'ing purposes...

If you play on the PC, there is a mod that makes Wuuthrad more powerful. Could give that a try.

off-topic: Ysgramor must have been pretty strong to have a shield in one hand, and a two-handed axe in the other o_O

The statue depicts the axe looking pretty small in his hands.

That's a statue, but you can see Ysgramor in life (well... not really, but...) in

Doesn't matter he just knowed that if you wield a two handed weapon and equip a shield you still get its enchantment ;-).

(Atleast in Oblivion this worked haven't tried it out in Skyrim^^)
