Isn't it rather strange?

I think it is sort of weird that in all TES you basicaly become the master of EVERYTHING. Like, in Oblivion, you could be a vampire/knight/fighter/arcane collage control/saviour of Cyrodil/a knight of the divin/vampire hunter/assain/Gray Fox/Saviour of Kavach/Magod. It is sort of weird that you are like a Holy God mage wiszard vampire slaying vampire uber god, ect.

Would you rather play as a whiterun guard standing in the same spot all day?

Must I explain the definition of "Role Playing Game" again?

Oh, [&@%!]. You're right. But still, it seems weird, doesn't it?

This one time..at bandit camp...I roleplayed as the guard in Oblivion that picks his nose...

alright serious-time: You are playing a pivotal figure that is shaping everything around him/her, a testament of your influence over others and why you seem to have a knack for everything...Why would Akatosh send out a pyrophobic dirt farmer to kill dragons? Red Dragon gives you wings!

Because playing a nobody wouldn't be fun.

I'm pretty sure each and every one of us "plays" such a person enough in real life.

I found it strange too when I first played with Oblivion. But I understand that some people don't have enough time to play the game over and over again with different factions, and those people want to try out everything the games can offer as the others. And of course there are the power-gamers, they just want everything, I don't judge them, but it's boring for my taste. :P Anyway, my opinion is that Bethesda wanted to make everyone to be able to try out everything in their games.

Well, don't forget that you don't have to be the master of everything. I've never had a character who was a member of every single faction in one sitting. I have, however, had a few characters, each with their own skills and factions to be master of. That's how I like to play because it keeps the game fresh for me on replays, as there's usually something I haven't done yet anyway.

And it goes without saying that my main character hardly ever exhausts every possibility in the game, even after a hundred hours of gameplay. There's so much to do!

My first Oblivion character became master of both the Fighters' Guild and the Mages' Guild.

I had to delete and start over when I took this same character into the Dark Brotherhood. It just felt so wrong to have such a heroic and compassionate character pledge loyalty to Sithis and the Void.

I agree, and since I more like to play roles in the games I usually only join one or two factions and master only few skills too.

I like being crazily powerful , but thats just me .. i must be one of those power gamers someone mentioned earlier , i just dont enjoy replaying the game many times in a short amount of time , maybe take a break for 3 months , then do a different charecter :P

I do my best to only commit to one major guild/faction per character. Though in Morrowind I always join the Temple for the services. Never advance or anything, but there it is.

My current (and first) Skyrim character is going to put the Companions aside. She helped them secure the first bit (and learned a nifty new curse-word as a result). But since I'm roleplaying her as a recently-cured vampire, I don't sit well with the notion of her
Spoiler:
consorting with werewolves, nor becoming one
and diving further into the Circle's legacy.

I always thought it was about running around, killing things, picking flowers and mining for rocks, then going into some city to buy better stuff so you can rinse and repeat.

Well, it can be, though for me, if I tried playing with this attitude I might as well play tetris...

Only 100 hours, Avron?

For me, I never join all the factions, as I love role-playing. It wouldn't be right to join House Telvanni and the Mages Guild, would it? Or maybe the Temple and the Imperial Legion. Those just seem wrong. I usually devote my character to one or a few factions, or maybe none at all(though I always join Hlaalu, unless I have a reason to not do so  ).

Don't forget about shooting butterflies in mid-air with a bow and arrows...
:? ...can you level-up your Archery skill that way?

Fus-Ro-Dah-ing them is pretty funny, especially when you catch 'em in groups.

Yes, but I pace my MQ progression since I roleplay. If I ignored it the guilt and sensibility would get to me like a Jane Austen book.
