Any idea if the are meant to represent an actual ethnic group?

If I had to guess it'd be one these three:

Arabian
Jewish
Persian

Only desert dwellers I know of, besides parts of Mongolia and middle Africa.

Only desert place with tropical north is Persia (Caspian Sea area).

edit - whoops - Elsweyr has tropical south..

TES Cultures may reflect real world cultures (Nords - Vikings, Imperials - Romans) but I doubt they were made to reflect a certain race.

I really don't see how anybody can supply an answer that'll stick better than any other answer. These guys are feline, not human.

This is true. I am not sure what kind of answer you are looking for. If you want to pin a race/ culture to the TES races, then you'd have exclude the Khajiit and Argonians from the Man and Mer races.

I'm sorry, but I calls em as I sees em. I have also noticed (though I admit that I'm not too skilled at picking out accents) that the female Khajiit sound somewhat Hispanic in Morrowind.

Although I think that people saying Hispanic may be partially right, I also think Persian/Arabic works with them. I mean, elsweyr(sp?) is a desert, and they just seem like that.

Sounds somewhat like South America to me, but I think that this is matter of opinion.

Anyway, on topic, I don't think you can compare fictional races to real ones, because there is always going to be a certain uniqueness in any culture, fictional or not, so no matter how much you try to fit a fictional culture into a real one, there will always be differences.

OT- thanks for the information on Elsweyr. It could very well be based off of south America, if that is how the geography is. I think the khajiit themselves could be based off of Arabic people, though.

I was going to make a joke about the Redguard's 50% disease resistance (AIDS joke) but then i realized it was poison resistance. *Sigh*

Khajiit only represent real-world cats. They're annoying yet lovable, always getting into trouble, and they don't give a flip 'bout nuttin'.

This seems to be the most sensible explanation.

I completely forget about Mexico, which is desert in the north, tropical in the south...

Actually, in Oblivion and Morrowind they have 75% disease resistance...

At this point I'm thinking that Khajiit may just be a mishmash of different, desert dwelling cultures, but I'm still leaning towards the Hispanic cultures.

What about the nomads of the Middle East? Desert sands, established trading traditions (since they did control the spice routes and the silk road), gypsy-like camel caravans...

Of course we could just ignore the desert bit and say Gypsy (or Romany, if the term Gypsy is offensive to anyone). Caravans (again), trading culture, and the establishment doesn't exactly trust them not to steal everything not nailed down.
