This article says, "You can have at most one permanent NPC follower and one dog follower at any time."

I hope that article helps! :)

On top of that, you can have a summoned creature or zombie with you.

So, you can cast reanimate corpse and it's like you have three followers.

ontop ontop of that, you can have your partners summon with you, ontop ontop ontop of that, you can have a quest related character with you ontop ontop ontop ontop of that you can have a shout summon, either call of valor or summon odahviing. That's a max of 7 companions through trolling bethesda.

Ontop of all that, a good horse like Shadowmere will fight for you as well.

So about 8, but there may still be more possibilities. Does it work to summon
Spoiler:
Lucien Lachance
as well as a normal summoned follower?

There is an exploitable glitch on 360 that allows for multiple REAL followers. And by 'real' I mean they can accept commands and carry items just like any other follower, as opposed to just being summoned or temporary due to a current quest. If you youTube search 'Skyrim Glitch - Multiple Followers' you should come across a vid from a guy named TheBeachedHippo that details how it's done. The glitch has to do with the dialogue that occurs when you hire and dismiss people. It seems that you can 'outrun' it so you are able to select the hire option before the engine 'realizes' that you already have someone. I followed this guy's instructions and was able to get it to work, but not on everybody. For example, I was able to get the two Dark Brotherhood assassins to accompany me along with Farkas, who's been my follower for quite some time. I went to the Dawnstar Sanctuary and walked up next to the male DB assassin, dismissed Farkas, immediately rehired him, and then QUICKLY hired the assassin before Farkas had finished saying "Let's not waste any time." I repeated the process for the female assassin and, voila, the party of two became a party of four. And since then I've acquired the dog Meeko without having to exploit anything because the game considers him a secondary follower. I would note that this glitch didn't work for me with Vilkas and a couple of others, probably because their dialogue is different. They just simply replaced Farkas. And that's the trick: the game doesn't seem to consider someone a follower until they've made whatever comment they make upon being hired, so you need only get ahead of that.

Happy shouting, friend!! I think I'll try this glitch on some other people. Let me know if you have any trouble getting this to work.

The most I've had at a time is two Thralls and a follower.

There is a mod to allow multiple real followers, if anyone's interested.

Spawn a load of Dremora Lords with the console, kill them with the console, then revive them with the Ritual Stone. :Twisted Evil:

It might cause problems to have more than 1 follower with you. Maybe jealousy and stuff. But that's in real life.

More than one wife, maybe, but multiple followers is just like a big party of adventurers.

My current record is Me, Belrand, Belrand's Familiar, Vigilance (Dead now, need to replace him, where do I get other war dogs from?) and my summoned Atronach. I am working on getting the perk for two summons to add another to the party. Makes life a doddle for my otherwise weak ass mage who whist being able to deal some damage, can't take more than one hit from any enemy worth it's salt

It's hard to be a polygamist in Skyrim, isn't it?

Eola is an awesome follower for this reason - 90% of the time she seems to have something summoned or reanimated.
