Yay glass armor

Bit of a random post.

Just want to show my satisfaction.
My Bosmer had been getting gold and buying iron and leather strips.
I temporarily gave him the warrior guardian stone effect and gave him the wel rested effect from a bed in a tavern.
I then started making hundreds of daggers. When he finally got to 70. I made Glass Armor. It looks really pretty.
There is a lot of Malachite Ore to be had in Steamscorch Mine. So I digged up everything I got.
Smithing is such a rewarding and fun skill to use. :3

I personally felt it was much MUCH more rewarding to take out a gigantic den of necromancers to find my first piece of glass, then I cleared two more tough dungeons (on master mind you) and found everything but the helmet.
In my opinion smithing is cheating, I went from 30 to 100 in two hours. I instantly deleted my playthrough and started again. Glass and daedric are supposed to be rare, if there was a quest to upgrade your smithing (as in travelling to a master smith holed up in a dangerous dungeon) to learn how to make rare armours then it would be awesome. It makes no sense to me that someone who has been making iron daggers instantly knows how to make the best armors.
Just my opinion.. Also my sig was made before I even saw this post lol.

I don't see anything wrong with the iron dagger method. Besides I even got my glass items at epic level. Wich is just short of legendary.

Yeah I guess I see what you mean. I sometimes like to play a really op char that decimates everything in their path. I have a save file with 100 smithing and enchanting with all perk trees just for that.
I'm a huge proponent of immersion though and I still think the method is very broken, it gives the player no reason to explore or do dungeons besides side quests, but even then what's the point when you already have all the loot and thousands of coin in a few hours. It concentrates all feeling of reward in a few minutes and removes all feeling of reward for the rest of the game. Not worth it.

Hey, a lot of us derped out on iron daggers on our first playthru. I'm trying to do something more balanced and fun this time around, which is only levelling Smithing by building armor/weapons that are at my highest current ability to smith. So, whatever to 30, Elven or Dwemer
only until the next perk, etc. Certainly slows things down and makes levelling it a much more tedious and/or expensive proposition. I suppose training would be fair too, but that gets
really expensive after 50 skill.

You know what. You're right. I had initially planned just to have a Bosmer with a simple hunting bow and iron arrows, wearing leather armor. But the second I picked up a pickaxe and started mining ore. The smithing fever got me. And before I knew I was walking around in glass armor...

Do you need any perks to make legendary leather armor or can you just raise the skill? I think the leather armor looks best on my ranger-type character but it lacks a lot in armor rating.

The highest you could get would be Flawless at 100 skill unless you used Smithing buffs from potions or enchantments.

My god, that's GENIUS! I hadn't thought about doing that, I am def going to do that, and to top it off I will only use materials made by me. Killing my own wolves and goats and bears and mining/smelting my own metals. I'll be making one tier below me though.
Its going to take forever, but at least it let's me use a skill I was really looking forward to without cheating.
+1 internets

Glass equipment is so beautiful in Skyrim. Just a complete 180 from the awfulness of Oblivion's glass equipment.

If making daggers over and over is not playign right, then i assume when a blacksmith makes the same item over and over again to sell it, he is not doing his job right?

Sure he would be good at making that one thing (iron daggers in this case), but how would he know how to make Dragonscale Armor after making 1,500 iron daggers.
That was the point he was trying to make. I, however, don't care. I leveled smithing with iron daggers so I could make some cool armor. I'll make a character later that doesn't smith at all.
On a side note, I think it's none of anyone elses business how we play the game. You play the way you have fun, we'll play the way we have fun. That's what Bethesda intended.

Elven (obviously) and Glass armor are both Mer-made, and I'm quite sure the two are exclusive to the Altmer (and some wealthy Bosmer, maybe). You can easily get a full set of Elven by killing the Thalmor guards in random encounters while you're on the road. By level 30ish, some of the Thalmor guards should be wearing Glass, so you can find a full set that way, too.
Dwemer armor is sort-of rare as no major (none, in fact) faction wear them, but a few weapons now and then happen to fall in the hands of the occasional bandit highwayman. If you search Dwemer ruins, you'll come across a full set eventually.
Ebony (and Daedric) is very very rare. And it should be. Remember how tight the security was in the ebony mines of Morrowind? And let's not forget Morrowind is no more - so, yeah, ebony is a very rare material made even more expensive with the downfall of the Dunmer. I don't like how Draugr lords always carry ebony shields and swords in the end-game, but it's still rare enough that I'm happy with it.

Funny, I have no trouble finding Ebony armor, but I have yet to see any glass. I did get my elven armor initially from killing a Thalmor guard, but I've gotten a ton of sets since.

Brofist. I'm glad someone else decided to do this too, hah.
It's definitely
obscene to think that a person whose sole experience with metalworking is grinding out iron daggers, could somehow conceive overnight to all-of-a-sudden making infinitely complex entire sets of armor. Between tanning leather, boiling it correctly, mining ores, smelting ores, hammering metal, tempering metal, and even just, shaping the different pieces... not to mention being able to even imagine their design >.>
Smithing could have been so magnificently elaborated upon.
Which isn't to say that I am dissapointed with Berthy's adding it at all.
And they actually stayed true to the lore that daedric metal is made from ebony infused with the essence of a daedra... Even if their 'science'/ lore got a little hinky with the glass/ malachite deal.
I kind of feel like it is a little easy to exploit. But, like fast travel. it's there to use or not. I really do wish it had quests associated with it, though...

I think smithing is a great addition to the game, I leveled it a lot with iron daggers, and there was times when I didn't use smithing at all. But I think It's good how to get the best armours you still need the materials in the first place. And it's quite difficult to exploit it make money, as most of the traders only have 1,000 - 2,000 gold handy, and if you're wanting to sell a few Legendary Daedric Armours, then you're gunna have -wait- along time to sell another one.
I think smithing is great, and I'm glad it's simple, i was worried it was going to be boring and tedious.
