I usually avoid any walkthroughs for my first playthrough though.

Obviously this site will be the best source of info... but 650 pages of Skyrim goodness is hard to pass up!

I want to get the guide but 25 dollars for it is putting a dent in my assets.

Well I preordered Skyrim from JB HI FI (an electronics store in Australia) and the preorder comes with the map, game and strategy guide for $109 AUD (the average price for games in Australia), and my school exams start on the 14th of november, so I can't play Skyrim until they're over which is the 21st. I thought I might read the guide at night until I can play.

OK, then I suppose it's useless in light of those "facts".

But its still worth more than some of the college textbooks I have to buy.

I buy strategy guides for stats and other background content, and rarely use the actual walkthroughs, unless it's a last resort. A lot of them also have some great artwork and extra pages with more concept art. So yeah, far from "useless" IMO.

I don't use strategy guides. The last one that I had ran through the game at medium difficulty (even though they claimed this wasn't the case. I noticed them making claims about certain things like time trials that were different on the highest difficulty) and was entirely useless at the highest difficulty. While the Skyrim Strategy Guide seems quite nice, I don't see myself using it if I were to get it.

Right, shouldnt be an argument about value. We all know the best info is here. I'm just talking to the other percentage who enjoys these books.
I just like books about subjects that I like.
For some folks the purchase of these books is a bit more intangible.

We have to admit that 650 pages is alot. Even though VERY hard to justify on top of CE.
I had (needed) the Oblivion GOTY version and I'd never get rid of that. Borderlands and New Vegas, maybe.

I thought about getting it, and then I asked myself, "How long before the DLC packs come out and will that change any info in the guide? What about patches?" Sure, easy enough to run a page or two of info off this site listing the changes and sticking it into the back of the guide, but if I'm going to be using the Wiki for most of my info, hard to justify even the price Amazon is offering.

I dunno. I'll wait and see what others say about the guide before getting it. Players have a way of finding bugs and a better way of doing things sometimes.

I won't be getting the strategy guide and if i were it would be for the stats etc.

Getting it with my preorder from Gamestop.

What TES always appealed to me with, is I could go in blind and figure it out without the need for a guide. It's the best way to enjoy a Sandbox RPG, IMO.

I'll be buying it simply for wiki work. UESP will be better in the end, but that "end" is years away.

I want EVERYTHING to be surprise to me. Getting a guide would just tempt me to look ahead.
And besides. I want to beat the game on my own merit. So, no. No guide for Union.

I'm buying the collectors edition startegy guide (hard cover) just for a collectors item. I'll never even open it.

I picked up the Oblivion guide when i first purchased oblivion....seeing as I had never played an elder scrolls game, It was my personaly diary for about a year.

Purchased the hardcover strategy guide. Won't be using at first , but wil read through it while traveling to work.

Yea, I'm getting it too. Like other have said, it gives me something to read when I can't play the game.

Never once bought a guide, never needed it. I always used the internet, and since finding this place I've used it for all my ES needs.

You do know that Gamefaqs, Ign, and other sites (along with theses forums) have free ones, right?
