I was thinking about Skyrim (as I have been 24/7) and I came to sad very sad realization ): All the characters we have come to know and love will be dead in lore. Baurus, Jauffre, Lucien Lachances mutilated body..All dead ): 200 years later so...yeah : /. It makes me wonder though...what about reoccurring characters such as M'aiq the Lair? What will become of them? It worked fine for Morrowind to Oblivion as it was only 5 years...but this is 200....I think it would be funny if they made him a zombie or something, a friendly one XD

I can't really think of a single character in Oblivion or Morrowind that I'm particularly attatched to or remeber for long periods of time, other than the Adoring Fan or maybe Glarthir because they're all boring generic NPCs that sound and look the same.

Nah, he's just cheated some Altmer to help him gain immortality. Or it is a prank from good ol' Fyr.

That's why we have the Daedra shrines, I presume
I think I saw a screenshot of a Mehrunes Dagon shrine, I can also imagine shrines to Sheogorath, Azura, Molag Bal and the others scattered around the landmass in various spots. Being able to do missions for the Princes again would be fantastic - but I'm not sure if it's been confirmed yet (difficult to keep track with all the leaks).
Then, as another poster above stated, Maiq the Liar is coming back. Haskill (Shivering Isles) could also theoretically return. I would be very surprised if Mannimarco didn't show up in any form since his artefacts have been in every game.
As far as everyone else is concerned - some may turn up in surprising ways (you may find the lost body of a person who, for example, decided to go off looking for adventure in Oblivion - you may even find books written by or even detailing the later exploits of some of the more popular characters), while other 'themes' may return, for example the Grey Fox identity had already been passed down hundreds of generations by the time of Oblivion. 200 years later the cowl could have remained with the thieves guild (providing the player didn't keep it), and the character is now a willing symbolic leader of the guild rather than enslaved by the curse of the cowl in the way Count Umbranox was.
Elder Scrolls games don't really feature much in the way of NPC continuity between games, but the concepts I described above are all possible as that is the way these sort of things have typically been handled before.

From a real life standpoint M'aiq is a easter egg in a game. From a Lore/TES standpoint M'aiq is a god.Tell me,what being can know what other people think,do or say in another universe?A supernatural one,a god.He may be a Aedra/Daedra or of Aedra/Daedra creation, doesn't matter to me.He has a place in any TES game.
At least thats the way I see it...

What about the Altmers? They'll likely still be around 200 years later. Carahil would still be around, for example. We'll likely not see her, but she'll be alive...
...Barring any freak accidents or illnesses.

Why does it matter if they are alive? Your character won't now them anyway. Personally I didn't really feel attached to any character in previous games, no NPC had enough spoken lines to seem alive. I did like the battlemaster-dude from the arena, but I always felt he needed to be more fleshed out for me to really care for him. TES games are amazing, no doubt about it, but the characters within are never truly interesting.
Also, M'aiq is more of an easter egg anyway.

A god? He could also be, you know, a descendant of the original M'aiq.

People are questioning the validity of this thread and I have to agree. Please discuss this in the lore section - it really deserves a topic like this, while it's wasted in here.
Aaaand moved instead, because I was a fool and did something wrong. Please forgive me.

There were plenty of characters I loved, for some reason I really loved the count of Skingrad (Janus), I loved his attitude during the entire oblivion crisis, and he is a vampire after all so he could easily still be alive

I'm counting on the Altmer lovers Eilonwy and Orintur to still be around, just to see what 200 years does to a love that is "...the most important thing in all creation."
I'm still banking on the idea we meet one of them during a Dark Brotherhood mission.
As to having your favorite characters sticking around, remember that Earil in Crucible is always looking for new clients.

There are a number of characters that are immortal like The Nerevarine (neither blight nor age can harm him and whatnot), a number of vampires and some people could expand their lifespans via necromancy. It also isn't inconceivable for there be a new Dread Pirate Roberts Grey Fox.
I know Dunmer can live for 120 and I think Altmer can live even longer than that.

It's not like M'aiq is going to tell you his actual age...
A naughty little book wrote:"How old are you, Berry? Seventeen? Well, you've a year or two yet before you're fertile, unless you're very unlucky. Elves don't have children readily with other Elves after that, even, so you'll be all right if you stick with them."
Barenziah remembered something else. "Straw wants to buy a farm and marry me."
"Is that what you want?"
"No. Not yet. Maybe someday. Yes, someday. But not if I can't be queen. And not just any queen. The Queen of Mournhold." She said this determinedly, almost stubbornly, as if to drown out any doubt.
Katisha chose to ignore this last comment. She was amused at the girl's hyperactive imagination, took it as a sign of a well-functioning mind. "I think Straw will be a very old man before 'someday' comes, Berry. Elves live for a very long time." Katisha's face briefly wore the envious, wistful look humans got when contemplating the thousand-year lifespan Elves had been granted by the gods. True, few ever actually lived that long as disease and violence took their respective tolls. But they could. And one or two of them actually did.

Anyway I hope the Dunmer royal family survived.

Holy heck— someone quoted me.
And it wasn't presented as possible evidence in a murder investigation, no less.

Interview with a Dark Elf
I've always been curious about the lifespan of elves. We all know they live much longer than all other races, is this true for the Dunmer as well? How many years would it take for you to be considered 'old'?
Alvur Relds: Well, I'm fifty, done my twenty years in the Service, and I'm in the prime of life. I expect another fifty good years, and then I'll be old, and slow, chatting with gaffers around the hearth for another twenty, thirty years. I've known mer still mind-sharp in their late hundreds, and heard of folk 200 and older. My family usually makes it to 120-130, providing we don't get sick or poked in the eye.
I do know that many elves live for hundreds of years.

Ha! I was wondering exactly the same... Skyrim is set 200 years after the events in Oblivion (Morr. > Obl. 4 years, Oblv. > Skyrim 200 years), so obviously it would be impossible for us to see anybody from Oblivion (except some Altmer). Basically, Skyrim should start with some fresh lore. Oh wait, isn't Divayth Fyr very old?

Why just Altmer? Don't Dunmer and Bosmer count as Mer too?

Yes but the point is that the above passage appears to be inconstant with in game lore.
