Playstation 3, overheating issues within time spans

This is mostly a question of a problem I have been having with my PS3 as of late.
Recently I was playing L.A. Noire, and what I notice is that after a certain period of time: it appears that the PS3 overheats and immediately goes to a 'deactivation' process and shuts off. The problem is it seems to variate, sometimes short periods and other maybe 10-20 minutes before it does such.
The thing is; I don't remember my play station 3 ever doing this when I had it since 2007/8 (Which would also relate to "Do playstation threes even play PS2 games anymore?". It's only been happening recently, and sometimes with certain particular games.
The main question would be: Does the Playstation 3 Overheat and then immediately shut down due to the new updates that have been coming about, or does it simply do this on its own power when it may overheat too much (Graphical input of L.A. Noire is very superior to other games such as LAIR or Mercenaries Two or Resistance Fall of men, etc) on the particular aspects of said game?
