Modders

I play Oblivion on the PS3, but mods really interest me, do I keep up with the MOD-Oblivion section. Several people seem to be particularly active, like Blackfire, Jakarius, and that Weasel guy. I was just wondering why you modders out there do this. Is it just for fun? Do you plan on making a career doing this at a studio?

A lot of people do it for fun, or because they would like to add their own touch or improve their favourite games. For some it's a hobby, for others it's a passion.

There are many legends out there who just do it because they love it, like Emma, the late Grumpy, AlienSlof, Elric Melnibone and many more. Other great modders are just made for a career in game design.

That's cool, I have a lot of respect for people able to do that. I've been getting a feel for what I've been missing out on, and I'd love to get into the modding community. Unfortunately, I don't currently have a computer adequate for gaming.

Currently I'm doing it for nostalgia's sake, and because once I've started something (albeit a year ago) I want to see it finished.

My number one job would be a game designer/programmer/whatever in the games industry. My computing teacher told me modding was one of many good starting points :) .

And let me tell you, I find modding fun, interesting and challenging, but it can also be the most annoying thing in the world when it doesn't go right. You need a lot of patience, and I feel I've only scratched the surface of modding. The people that make the mods such as OOO, MMM and total conversions like Nehrim must have limitless reserves of patience!

So you started learning this stuff in school? I wondered about that too. Are you hoping to work at a particular place making games?

I don't do modding in school, but I'm taking Computing (standard grade at the moment, which is the Scottish equivalent of GSCEs) and I hope to carry on into Higher (A-Level) and so forth.
I really don't know why I'm good with computers, its probably because I've grown up using them. I taught myself all I know about modding Oblivion (not too much mind) from online tutorials.
The day my school has the resources to let us mod Oblivion for a project I will jump with joy!

As for my future, I'm not entirely sure yet, I don't have a particular place in mind.

What do you learn in Computing? I've taken computer classes, but most people go into those knowing everything already. This coming school year I'm going to take a Programming course, then Senior year I'll take AP Computer Science, which I can get college credit for.

Well to be honest the last year has been fairly easy, mostly just things you have to know to pass exams. Standard grade computing covers word processing (boring) spreadsheets (mostly boring) databases (very boring) programming (interesting, but not enough of it!) computers in industry (like robots and stuff) and computer systems (unfortunately half my class don't know what a hard drive is.)

But my teacher is a great guy and I know he knows his stuff. I've started on programming and I mean to start doing it at home once I get a decent programming book.

Yea we covered the word processing, etc. I wanted to take Programing this year, but the introductory classes were actually prerequisites. So I had to take them this year to take Programing next year. We did learn some HTML, but that's not programming it's mark-up. In Programming we apparently start off learning Java, then move on to the BASIC language I think.

 Hehe... I'm not sure why this is funny... It's late here.

The reason I mod is because it's just a hobby of mine and it's something I love to do. I cannot improve the game, it bores me. I like to create things in the game. I need to create. It's like an urge that builds up inside of me.
Also, sometimes I see something that inspires me, and I make it into a mod!(If possible of course  )
I guess I just love to do it. It's enjoyable to me.

Well, personal, I do it to avoid my life... but I'd never tell you guys that... oh wait...
When my Computing teacher asked me a couple of days ago, I told him I do it cause I enjoy re-creating people I know, and causing them untold suffering...

Just having a bit of fun

It sure seems like a lot of fun to mod. Did you two teach yourselves?

Yes, I taught myself. I can't take all the credit, though. I had some help from the Construction Set Wiki.
Sometimes I still have to use it, too.

Dracomage, I feel the same as you. I want to mod Oblivion, however I don't have the computer to do it.

Weasel, do you just use the Construction Set to mod? If so, how do you get it?

If you can run Oblivion, you can mod.

Since the Construction Set is required to mod, I think I do.

Here's the link to the downloads page.

If you want to get pretty into modding, then check out this topic for modding tools.

Yea I want a computer really bad :? My parents don't want to get me one because they're worried it would be outdated by the time I go off to college in two years

It'll probably be outdated in three months.
If you really want one, try to convince them into looking for a mid-range one... this way, it's easier and cheaper to upgrade.

This.
I seriously should upgrade mine. It was obsolete literally within ten days of buying...

My feeling is that if I were to get a higher-range one, then it would be less obsolete. How much do you suppose an appropriate computer would cost?

Depends.
Any modern computer (Well, most.) can run and mod Oblivion. The higher end ones that I would recommend are Alienware... But they're bloody expensive.

I was interested in Alienware. I just think I'll have a really hard time getting that much money by November. It could be done, between my birthday in August and maybe balancing a job with school. The job part would be extremely difficult though.

Well, a mid-range one can cost from $1,500 to like, $2,500. But a Weasel said, a top-of-the-range one, like an Alienware, can cost up $8,000, but you really do get your moneys worth with those beasts! :Twisted Evil:

Are we talking in USD? As far as I've seen, I could do very well with under $2000. Perhaps half that if I sacrificed some screen size. Do you think one of those would be totally obsolete in two years?

Mods aye? Let me just slide the one I helped on here: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35560

Any way, modding is fun. I usually fix conflicts myself in the CS.

The reason I mod is because it's my dream to work for Bethesda it would actually be sooooo cool. I started with Morrowind though and i learnt from the Tamriel-Rebuilt tutorials which are really good, then I joined the Commonwind project.
