The utter uselessness of religeous debates

(I would like to point out, that this is not a thread for debating religion, it is just on how stupid debating it actually is)

You know, I am far from being one, but I can respect the opinion of an atheist. They have logical facts to back up their beliefs. But the thing is, NO ONE, is 100% sure on how we came to be, why the hell waste time debating on the subject?
Having it said to you, that apparently the very thing that you base your entire life on, just is not real, is a gun shot to the face. How can you expect that after years and years of believing what you do, their just going to throw it all away. This goes the same way for both sides.
If an atheist just comes up to a theist, and bashes everything they believe, what good does it do? Tell me, what is getting accomplished? You make people mad, for sure, but are you converting anyone? no. Once again, NO ONE knows how we came to be, why attack someone with a belief that is not completed, that has no facts that can support the side by 100%.
If someone told me that everything I believe is fake, what do you think I would do? Just go "ok, it's fake, I was wrong" and get rid of everything my life is based on, on an belief that can not be completely and 100% supported?

This is just how useless the debate is, no one will win, there is no real point in attacking someone, weather you are a theist or an atheist, because no one freaking knows why we are here!

Religious debates can be heated and pointless, sure, but they are a lot of bloody fun and enlightening sometimes if you have a worthy opponent to sling theories and facts at. I'm not even a tiny bit religious, but I sometimes like to look at it from another perspective and throw what if's against another atheist to see how they respond to someone who isn't biased to the thing they are "attacking" so to speak.

Everything is a learning experience, and if you ask me, if we didn't debate about these things constantly then we would never get anywhere. The effect the belief system has on society as a whole is incredibly complex.

Humans are curious and curiosity killed the cat
Man for all time have wonder why we are here, where we made by a bein who seems to be impossable? where we sooooooooooo lucky that we had a .9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% chance of existence? which also seems imposable

Really while i agree with you the way you put it is unfair
I don't believe its wrong to tell someone soemthing YOU think is right, I can respect both sides beliefs but i cant respect the full blown war that comes next

The debate is because we want to know whats out there, and one of the best ways to find the answer to things is debate it

I always respect and understand others opinions on this subject, even though I personally think they are incorrect. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks that way.

Ditto. I keep my opinions to myself when I'm not asked about them. Unless someone annoys me. I can be a real arse when I'm fed up with something.

Sure, when it leads to pointless fighting and different forms of "Mine is better" It's pointless, but i like topics like these because they can lead to interesting points if done civilly. Especially when it comes to discussions of Faith, But Faith is something you don't kid around about. I usually discuss with other people who'll have a proper debate about it.

A lot of people! I've had someone come to my door and try to convert me to be a Jehovah's Witness, twice I think.

There are all sorts of people  Me being in arse for instance is rather rare. It does happen but I'm generally quite layed back.
On topic:
I enjoy debates from time to time. As long as they're civil and not view forcing.

Really? I haven't had the pleasure

anyways... I really enjoy speaking with my friends in class about the difference between the abrahamic(?) religions (Islam, Christianity and Judaism) mostly when we are served the nasty-cooked pork that our school for some reason dares calling food

Look at a typical debate between, say, some atheists and Baptists (religious debates obviously cover more than that, but it's just an example). The athiests believe these people are wasting every moment of their lives living in fear of a non-existent being. They're stunting themselves and not enjoying eveything life has to offer simply because an old book tells them to. They want to try and get these people to see their truth and start enjoying life without the ever-present threat of heaven and hell holding them back.

The Baptists think that anyone who's not one of them is going to hell. Imagine that situation for a second. There are billions of people out there who are going to eternal damnation simply because you can't be bothered to help them see the light. If you believed that, do you think you could sit back without trying to help these people come to your side? That's one rough example with a reason that can be attached to many debates with it.

Ahh yes... trying to convince your beliefs is one thing, but advertising them is a whole different story

It's extremely difficult to get devout believers to change their views. If you're trying to convince them otherwise, it's probably a waste of time.

This is saying how debates are useless, this is not a religious debate in itself. Don't be a [&@%!] and try to change what people believe.

Of course I don't believe that everyone who doesn't believe is going to hell.

If you had reason to believe that a nuke was going to go off would you not try to warn others?
it's the same idea

I belive in hell and belive some will go
and i feel guilty because i'm lucky enough to have found what i believe to be real

And yet, it's your opinion that people shouldn't show their beliefs to others. Some people think differently. I personally say that religious debates are good if they're civil and go somewhere, as they help people invoved in understanding their faith and the faiths of others, and possibly even let others influence them. Nowt wrong with that.

As much as atheist would want that, they don't do a good job of showing it. Instead of being reasonable about it, they attack people

Why isn't it fair? People kill over religion.
I don't see any Atheists killing theists.

It may. That was a crude example anyway. And I'm not saying that preachy atheists are good. I'm just saying that there are a lot more preachy theists.
