I found a link to a recent interview on IGN of Todd Howard and he mentions that in addion to fast travel "We also have a carriage system that can take you to some major locations that you haven't been yet" So the silt striders are back in a sort of way. Yeah! fast travel for Role Players

good idear on their part, now i won't be pretty much forced to use fast travel, and have something to spend money on.

Yea, I also notice him saying "to some major locations that you haven't been yet." I'm guessing you will have to "find" all the cities by riding in the carriage? Not like in Oblivion where all the cities are already found.

it's exactly as red death redemption, in there you can fast travel cities that you already know or pay for transport for any other city i the same thing

Also, Im hoping i could actually see the way and not just teleport from road to road(Tho i won't mind much) Sitting in a rotating carriage on a rocky road and drinking a good bottle of wine is what its all about.

This is good news for me. Hopefully they'll let you view the entire ride like in RDR, or skip it if you want to.

Yeah, I agree with Spiney. Being able to see the entire journey would undeniably be cool, but it'd probably get annoying if you were forced to do it every time.

Indeed, it'd me like in Too Human were you can't skip that annoying death animation. It'd be great if you can sit through your favourite routes, but skip it when you're wanting to hop around quickly.

I think it should be one or the other. Having fast travel AND a carriage system makes carriage system obsolete :/

how?

the carriage system is for those who want to RP and have "Real" travel
while fast travle is for when you want to get done fast

I think I understand what your saying
"why bother to pay when you can just go there for free?"
well they put the carrige in there just for those who did not want to get there just for free

why?
cause thats how awesome they are

I agree with Wolfie here. The carriage system will not be obsolete at all. I'm pretty convinced I will use it a lot. Besides, it's not gonna be like fast travel only that it costs a bit, they will be used differently. Howard said in an interview that you will be able to fast travel to places you've already been to/discovered, while the carriage system can take you to a few places you haven't been to yet.

agreed, having them both will give you a chance to RP and fast travel to places youve never been before, like in morrowind. you could fast travel to vivec via silt striders without having been to the city yet

I wonder if places you pass will be marked as undiscovered on your map. I think that if an adventurer was riding from a city to a city that was foreign to him, he would mark caves, mines, ruins, etc. he saw.

I like idea, but would the carriage be able to take you to all of the locations that FT could? For example, I doubt a carriage would take you to a skooma den in the mountains, but FT sent you to those places. So how would that be defined?

Carriages would work like silt striders in Morrowind, and would go from city to city.

With all the horses in Oblivion, we should have seen carriages. Now that they are introducing them, why would that take away from the game?

I'm also curious about how the carriages function. If you can see the whole ride, that means that they (programmers) can't lock you in, so you need the ability to exit, in case of enemies/bandits. This means that you could leave the carriage alone, and battle, right?

Then how would they prevent the traveler/guide/driver you paid from staying/leaving?
Could you leave them there? Or would they leave you?

It will porabably be

You: Caan I have a carrage ride to [CITY NAME]
Carrage man: Yes that will be [AMOUNT OF MONEY]
You: Here you go
Black screen: BLankety blank
Carrage man: here we are at [CITY NAME]

I doubt well be able to see out

I reckon it will be fast travel just on the pretext that you're in a carrage...

Damn my spelling is crap

I think that after Red Dead Redemption did viewable carriage rides that it'll be unlikely Skyrim will have anything less. To get around combat I expect they'll probably just have the carriage appear non-threatening to enemies, so it simply wouldn't be attacked. That said though, what I'd love to see when a carriage is under-attack:
  • Player encourages them to outrun the threat. Driver will get the carriage going as fast as he can, at which point player can:
    • Jump out of the carriage; enemies will chase the carriage but it will get away safely, but some may stay behind to attack the player. A good option if the carriage is attacked by a dragon though as you can fight it toe-to-toe to get its soul if you win.
    • Cower inside the carriage; basically just turns the whole thing into an another part of the journey, good if you can't be bothered fighting or it's a particularly dangerous enemy, carriage will get away after a little while.
    • Fight from carriage; players climbs onto carriage roof, at which point they can fight normally, but can't move off the top of the carriage, so ranged characters will come into their own as they pick off bandits in pursuit, and you can still slash away at a dragon passing close overhead.
  • Player tells the driver to stop. At which point player will disembark and must fight off the enemies, with the help of the driver. This is the most direct way to deal with a threat, but runs the risk of the driver or carriage being destroyed, at which point you'll need to walk or fast travel normally.
Probably wouldn't bother doing any of this is the threat is minimal, such as a mudcrab or some wolves, as the carriage would be more likely just to scare them away, or could speed up briefly to outrun them automatically. However, anything more threatening would give the options.

During normal carriage rides, player should have the option to disembark (forfeiting their fee as the carriage continues onward), or skip the ride and go straight to the destination.

I agree with everything but climbing ontop the carriage to fight. Balance issues and what not, as well as the mountaineous terrain and possibly trees, would make it impossible to stand.

I remember that in the gaminformer podcast todd said he really liked Red Dead Redemption, maybe he can use some ideas form there and one of them could be the carriage, you can skip or watch it

What I want to see is how they make the carriages look unique to skyrim because I do not want them to look to western in a viking setting.
