Silly Stereotypes

Do you live in a country or area which is a target for many stereotypings?
Are all those stereotypes wicked lies, or are some of them actually true?
Are you in fact the embodiment of every single stereotype of your nationality? Jebus Christ!

I go first!
All Swedish girls are blonde, named Inga and have a German accent. :|

All americans are fat, stupid, geographically imparied, illiterate, and know nothing about the world their country "protects", according to Western Europeans and Canadians.

Well, I've not met one American able to point out Sweden on a map of Europe.

Norway and Sweden is the same thing, apparently.

Apparently all British people spend their lives sitting at home reading the newspaper, drinking tea and worshipping the queen. Oh wait, that's true...

It's the school system here; it's terrible. I'll admit I couldn't do that. I couldn't point out more than maybe five states in the US.

All old Scottish people wear kilts 24/7, live in the hills and drink nothing but whisky.
All young Scottish people are drunken football fans from Glasgow that do nothing but drink whisky, they also possess the power to construct a sentence using nothing but swear words.
And of course we all have red hair too.

Preposterous!

*Sips PG tips*

*Lights up tobacco pipe*

To be honest, I do do a lot of the stereotypes...except the queen worshipping, and I have to say, Cricket should go and die.

Judging by my age, I should also be a heavy smoker, tracksuit wearer, foundation covered Waterloo Road fan. Guess who's none of the above?

...isn't Waterloo Road supposed to be good, tho? Never seen it, but I hear it's not 100% awful.

Dean: you're a moderator, y'know. So you should moderate your language. I mean really (and I repeat this simply to present an example, I mean no offence), "the Daily Mail"!

I'd probably call myself a tea drinking monarchist (Kate Middleton's going to be the hottest queen since---- I have no idea  ), but cricket ain't my thang. Though the Ashes is always watchable, and it gives us the chance to rip into those ex-colonials down under, which is, frankly, a sport in itself.

Strrrr-ewth, mate!! Yeah-look! (etc)

If anyone in The Universe cared about ODI's, then you'd be doing okay right now. But they don't. So you're not.

(apparently, because of you lot having the World Cup in 2015, the next two Ashes are going to be back-to-back, so that's 10 straight head-to-heads between our two fair nations)

I'm not really sure if there are any stereotypes for Portugal. Probably because most people don't even know we exist. Are there any?

(Drake's terrible sand castle idea doesn't count)

Well, now you have. XP

Americans are horrible with geography, though, even their own. If I had a nickel for each person who thinks that NYC is the capital of New York State, or that Los Angeles is the capital of California, I'd have more money than Donald Trump.

I don't actually know the capital of California. I knew it wasn't LA, but I don't know what it is. However, my family's from New York, so I know it's Albany. Aside from NY, I know maybe five capitals if I thought about it a long time.

D'you know. That, outside of movies. I have never heard anyone say Strewth in that context. I've only ever really heard Farmers say G'day, Fair Dinkum is seldom heard too.

In fact, in my life i have only ever used that kind of lingo when talking to American and French tourists, purely for kicks (and a heavy stereotyped aussie accent ta boot)

...I actually do use some aussie lingo, but its usually rather explicit...

I have a bowler hat in my house, and a long grey coat and an umbrella. But I don't drink tea or read the Guardian, the communist propaganda that it is. I guess that makes me different. I also have a motorbike, not a Mini, have never worn a tracksuit or hoodie, and have only seen the Queen once. I've never been in a pub with a foundation date more recent than 1890. I hate the M25, First Capital Connect and white van men. I have never been north of the Scottish border, though I have chucked an apple core over it. And, finally, all of my outdoor equipment is from Karrimor.

Here're a couple good ones I just thought of:

All people of Irish extraction have red hair and drink like fish. I get annoyed when someone looks at my last name(which is Irish) and proceeds to say "Funny, you don't look Irish".(I have brown hair and brown eyes, btw). I mean, really? What, I should look like Lucky the $#%$^&$ leprechaun or something?![/rant] As far as the second point, I quote my Irish-American Lit. teacher, an Irish immigrant: "Oh I'm so sick of this damn [stuff] about the Irish and drinking!"

All Germans wear lederhosen, drink steins of beer and eat sausage and sauerkraut all day. Now, yes, those ARE cultural mannerisms of SOME Germans, but only in Bavaria, and even then only at Oktoberfest and a few other folk festivals anymore. Well, except for the drinking part. Yeah, I've never seen a German drink from a stein, but beer drinking does seem to be part of everyone's daily routine.

Listening to Metal labled me as a goth/emo for most of my highschool years. (of which i was nothing even close to). If anyone remembers the show Daria, her friends boyfriend (trent i think) was the look i've always wanted. (i've lived that up, only in clothing though, mum says tats and piercings are not allowed, but i'm 18 in 4 months so bah)

...If people were really dull they'd lable me a raver or something similar because my itunes library is getting more and more of that kind of music...though i have nothing in my wardrobe that represents that...

Sweden is covered in snow all year. Swedes are emotionless and serious. Well, if it's in The Simpsons, it must be true.

It's my guilty pleasure. How I long to have had Tom 'The Maverick' Clarkson as my English teacher.

Bingo. And what Finns know better than anyone else is, all Russians eat is sauerkraut, and they otherwise too smell funny.

As a member of the Swedish speaking minority in Finland, I know we are all upper class, like Schnaps with song, look down on peasant Finns whose high culture is about limited to the Sauna, and those poor devils never made it to decide, are they Swedes or Russian... it was one of our minority that told them they were Finns. Heh.

Stereotypes are an expression of human thought, feeling and behavior. It's a cousin with xenophobia.

Good topic, enjoyable. :)
