Favorite Instrument(s)?

I remember there was a thread for this a while ago, but I cannot for the life of me find it. It had a neatly made poll. :|

Well, I really really LOVE songs with trumpets and really deep bass/cello. Dunno, just goes together like PB&J. Maybe I'll learn how to play the trumpet sometime in my life.

If anyone knows any songs that adhere to those criteria, please give me titles... PLEASE?! It's why I listen to CAKE so much, they have a very good trumpeter.

Also, post a good example of what you post about.

I love the harmonica for some reason.

It's such a pure sound.

I love drums, especially when jazz-influenced. Here's some Do Make Say Think:

Goodbye Enemy Airship
If I Only...
Minmin

The best thing about this band are its two drummers, who play off each other incredibly well, and achieve beautiful beats and patterns.

I'm a drummer, so I'm a bit bias when it comes to this question. I also rather enjoy the flute, and anyone who's a Tull fan will know why.

ace: I dunno, if you separated acoustic and electric guitar? Then I'd vote...
ME? Difficult?! Bah... :D

(acoustic gee-tar, would be my pick)

But a general guitar post would be: The Assassinaton Of Dow Jones, by Ohad Benchetrit, aka Years. Not my fave track by him, but I can't find it on YouTube...

Where's the Piano on there?

Pianos, harmonicas, and guitars as long as they're not playing metal. And I'm a bit obsessed with banjos and squeezeboxes at the moment, so I might be going instrument shopping soon...

I've always wanted a Chromatic Harmonica so I can learn the solo in For Once In My Life. What a party piece that would be! I used to love playing my Hohner Blues Harp and its perfect portability but when it broke a £20 imitation was never the same. The reeds caused missed notes all the time and there was one that was faulty from the start so I should have returned it for a slightly more expensive but much more reliable and rewarding Hohner.

Other favourite instruments are generally ones that can stand out on their own and play with an orchestra such as Piano, Violin, Flute, and Oboe but as I'm a huge fan of many genres of music and the use of music in culture and religion I like to experience them all. I can't think of an instrument I don't like the sound of but I'm not a huge fan of very low register instruments.

The Human Body is of course the best instrument of all because it plays all the musical instruments and can create music through voice and clapping. I like the vocal harmonics of choirs such as Gospel and Mass.

Persussion also fascinates me probably because I'm not good with percussion instruments even though I have good sense of rhythm. I admire a good drummer and they are the unsung heroes. I can watch the brilliant Evlyn Glennie on youtube for hours and love every second of her percussion seminars. I've always got time for the Xylophone, Glockenspiel and Timpani Drums.

Why is the lute not on the list? Or the ocarina?

There's only a limited number of poll options, which is probably why instruments such as the contrabass clarinet, the serpent, the Anglo concertina and the Sousaphone will sadly have to be missed.

Singing and piano have been a part of my life since I was in middle school, and I absolutely love to do both. Though until recently I had taken a several-year-long break from playing piano, it remains to me as an important past time. But where my heart truly lies is on the slick strings of guitars. Electric and acoustic, playing guitar is literally my favorite thing to do in life. By junior year of high school I was giving lessons to peers and several university students for an acceptable wage, pending mostly on their current level of skill. I practice at least 3 hours a day, at most 8, usually somewhere in between. I've played in several assorted types of bands, from a ZZ Top cover band, a Megadeth-influenced Thrash Metal quartet, and a few shredder duos. It's the one thing in life I'm never bored with doing, and I will continue to play until the day I die. I've made the attempt to teach myself as many new techniques, positions, chords, scales, methods and styles as humanly possible but I know my pursuit of knowledge will be eternal.

One thing that most people misconceive about my guitar playing is that fast playing is the most important aspect of my playing. Well you'd be sorrily mistaken to think that. It's true, I'm very quick on the fretboard if I do say so myself. After all, I went literally all the way around the globe and couldn't find a guitarist faster than me. But I only use my speed and skill as a medium to reach new boundaries, to create new ways to implement my skills. I'm locked in a chase to infinity, seeking the ultimate way to play guitar, to have a comprehension for the instrument that exceeds that which Mozart had upon his piano. I want to know absolutely everything there is to know about playing guitar. I want to stretch the limits of imagination and redefine what it means to be guitarist and change the image of guitar playing. Remember, me practicing as much as I do isn't because I want to become a faster guitarist, but a smarter one. I know, underneath the 12 modal tones of each octave presented on my fretboard, lies an entire world of music beyond imagination waiting to be discovered. As far as I've come and as fast as I am, I may never reach that place, but I'll be damned if I sure as hell don't try.

Finally, I'm not trying to brag, or boost my ego in any way. In fact, I encourage every guitarist, and musician for that matter, to embark on a musical odyssey as I have. Whether your goal is to learn your favorite song on your choice instrument, or to be able to play at a certain speed, or if you wish to join me and find a place in the massive world of music, this never ending wheel of time, and dine in the halls amongst the glorious bards of the past.

Hey, since we're posting Musical Manifestos, can I post mine? I can?! Some of Awe!

Tourist's musical manifesto is this: Have a good time. All the time.

On the actual topic of instruments and the various noises they make. I think (someone please correct me, as I've a feeling I'm wrong) John Williams once remarked that the beauty of the guitar is in the dying away of its note. The same could be said of the piano, which - even on a crappy upright - has a character of sustain and decay that I just can't get enough of. Lush.

The piano can also be made to do stuff like this.

Mine is "It's rock and roll/folk (delete as appropriate), it doesn't have to be in tune!"

As for piano quotes, this is my favourite one, from none other than J S Bach - "It is a very simple instrument. All you have to do is play the right keys at the right time and it practically plays itself"
