Roleplaying.
Hello. I don't want to claim this as a real official topic, or as something really epic, I just went searching for a topic about roleplaying. I found so many of them, it's a sad thing there's not an active one. I hope this one will stay active. I'll try my best to keep it active!
What is it?
Roleplaying is an optional way of playing the game, that can range from a brief diversion to a full overhaul of the game. By playing as if your character has a personality and preferences beyond the game's basic statistics, you can add additional depth and interest. At a basic level, many players will give their characters some sort of backstory explaining who the character is. Beyond that, you can choose to incorporate limitations that make gameplay more realistic or more challenging, as detailed in Increased Realism. Or you can model your character after any favorite person, real or fictional. UESP.NET
It is imagining that you're the character and everything you do is real. So it adds things you've got to do, for example: sleeping, eating, washing yourself, washing your clothes...
It also adds limits. For example, you should think about how many things you can carry with you, or in what weather you can not travel.
I don't say there's just one way to do it. Some people like to do it all the way, as realistic as possible. While others do more semi-roleplay, for example, having a character with a background and a personality but they don't eat or sleep. It's just how you want it. [http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Roleplaying][X][/http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Roleplaying]
Characters
So it all begins with one thing: This is sparta your character. I'll just describe this on the realistic roleplay way.
Your character has a background. It has a history. You can play that it had a common one: raised in a normal family, living a normal life. You could. But you also could not. Interesting, right?
Let's just say that we're talking about an Orc here called Hans. Hans his mother and father left him in the forest when he was just born. Not because they are some kind of retarded idiots, but because they didn't have the money to raise them.
Hans got found by a Bosmer couple. They couldn't leave him alone there and decided to adopt him.
So, now figure out how an Orc would feel if he was raised by Bosmers. Imagine a green guy next to them, twice the size in just a couple of years and not a lover of the green side of Tamriël. While they love mother nature, Hans doesn't give a damn.
You can go several ways. ''Hans became a loving Orc and he became very thankful to them.''
Or you could go this way: ''Hans never felt at home and he became a guy with a temper. He never had any patience and always wanted his way. He's an aggressive guy.''
And then you can go further and further with the story.
This is an example of how Hans could turn out: ''Hans is an aggressive Orc who always wants his way. He's insecure about himself. The fact his parents left him left a black hole in his life and he never had a real home. He's a fond of meat. He's the type of guy who would go to a bar and drink a lot, then start a brawl. As a job, Hans would most likely do something in the Arena. He's not really a warm person and would maybe be surprised by the first kills he would make, but learn to live with it and starting to love it.''
You could go way more far. Be creative! I don't say this is the best, or only way to start making a character. I'm not really good at it either. Take your time.
YAAY.
Let's discuss it now. Leave your character, ask questions and tell me and others about your roleplaying experience. Tell us what you're roleplaying right now. Yaay.

That section's got nothing to do with roleplaying in Oblivion. This forum is suitable for it.
Anyway, I'm new to Oblivion really, and haven't focused on any roleplaying in it yet, so I'll leave this topic to the people who have.
It was not intended to be a lame post your lame stats topic, which is what it unfortunately turned into. If you notice, I actually posted in that topic, posting my character build, roleplay intent, and progression of that character... until I realized that it was a waste of time, as people never actually discussed any of it in there, and just wanted a place to post their stats.

I'm just gonna say you can do some really hardcore roleplaying with the 'Pain Bringer' armour from TESnexus, and leave it at that.

LMAO you are nasty, I am sure OP didn't mean that kind of roleplay.
I am really not good at roleplaying Oblivion. I make some basic decisions: is this character honest, and what sort of combat do they prefer? (though I always hybridize classes). Then some things develop. For instance my golden saint has begun to like khajiits and pay highwaymen, he is is generally a helpful and well-mannered guy, but I also like to pretend he doesn't understand mortals at all. He is a little afraid of becoming famous, which has led him to not having completed a lot of larger questlines. As far as background go, I really have no idea what he was doing OUTSIDE of the Shivering Isles, but he doesn't seem interested in going back... probably the curiosity for mortals.

I always go in wanting to role play a Bosmer. And do it full marksman/stealth style. Spend little to no time in cities, live by exploring the land always having the dense forests as home base. But eventually I'd have to venture into the cities to do the main story and completely kill the role play I would have liked to play. So I end up being a Nord and slashing and bashing my way through the game. When I am in the wilds it always makes me wish I had of played that Wood Elf character. But no... it never happens.

You're misunderstanding the RP term... telling how you roleplay is like saying "In my game my character Bob likes cheese so he kills goblins and steals their cheese"

- No houses, thus no storage, thus only what can be carried.
- No sleeping. Only rests (meditates) in Camps or sometimes rents a room at level time.
- No Alchemy, no potions or poisions, no bows, no blunt, no sneak (Illusion), no security (Alteration).
- No DB or TG. No Murders, keep assault to the minimum (so far still 0. )
I put a large penatly on Personality, a little penalty on Willpower, and boosted Str, End, & Agility.
Blade, Block, & Heavy all started at 40. Other Major Skills: Destruction, Conjuration, Illusion, & Mysticism.
The jail/sewer/tutorial, was foreshadowing. The character actually starts before meeting the Emperor.
As a trusted Commander for Dagon, Luciferi (the fallen angel, who will fall a different direction this time), was sent to Tamriel (Cyrodill) to scout the countryside, and gather intelligence for the Opening of the Oblivion Gates, and the Invasion of Tamriel (Cyrodill).
- Traveling in disguise, using Illusion (charm to counter the personality of 10), decides to enter the Arena, to better judge the Fighting Skills of the Races.
- While scouting out the various cities, he is asked by the Count of Leyawiin to check into a certain Orc. Inadvetantly becoming a Knight Errant, then the Knight Commander of the Knights of the White Stallion (mod).
- Thinking that traveling under the Guise of a Knight, might give him better intel. He decieds to do join the Fighter Guild. Also to better judge their strenghts & weaknesses.
- He stubles across a False Vampire Hunter in Bruma. Then is asked to join the Order of the Virtuous Blood, an actual group of Vampire Hunters, ironicly run by a Vampire. He attempted to get the Vampires to join Lord Dagons Cause, but was refused.
- He is continually accousted by locals, to help in some situation or other. Oddly though, he almost starts to enjoy helping. Is it the Knight Commanders Armor....
- Daedra Shrines? Worshipers, playing at witchcraft. Maybe more Allies? Alas, to no avail, they are consumed with their own petty existance.
** Next on the plate, once the FG Quests are complete:
* There is a report of an attack on the Nine Divines. This bears looking into, as it could interfere with Lord Dagons Plans. (if the Knight Commanders Armor is changing him, think what the Knights Relics will do).
* Trouble in Sheogoraths Realm??? Will Luciferi go Mad, and at what cost???
* Get sent to prision, to "Escort" the Emperors "Escape" (ambush)... easy enough... (or is it). What is the Emperor Talking about? Dreams? Destiny? Why could I not Kill the Emperor???
+++++ A Dremora Lord, as the Champion of Cyrodill

Bad Example Jeff...
Anyway My character's just thinking...
I will serve my friends and allies and be victorious. And after surviving several wars he's surprised. Incredibly So.
Eventually he gains an assortment of allies and enjoys his adventures until epilogue time.

I've never agreed with the idea that roleplaying should mean acting out little everyday things like washing clothes. I come from a pen-and-paper RPG background, where roleplaying means simply playing your character's role. Some restrictions (like not stealing if you play an honest character) are obviously appropriate for this, but I think it makes more sense to just assume that washing (for instance) happens off-camera instead of actually being played out. I prefer to spend time on things that are more interesting in themselves and support playing that character specifically and staying in-character.
For instance, on my last character (an orc scholar who studied creatures) I collected all beast parts, like wolf pelts and troll fat, instead of selling them. I didn't join the dark brotherhood or the thieves' guild because he wasn't a career criminal, but joined both fighter's and mages' guilds because he was a sage of a very rugged kind. Like all my characters, I didn't play out any daily needs except for 7 hours sleep - that one's because it affects my suspension of disbelief to actually see my character out and about through day and night and day again without stopping. But I find it easy enough to assume that he takes his armour off before bed without actually doing it manually, especially when going into the inventory actually takes me out of character. I play first-person because I find that more immersive than seeing my character's own back when I'm supposed to temporarily be him.
YMMV of course, but to me that's what roleplaying is about.

It's not about an agreement or anything, it's about what you prefer. It's not that one is right or wrong, it's your way and you should do it the way you want.
I make a character with also a personality, but I also wash my clothes and take off my armor. I don't know why, I just like it. And if you don't nobody will force you into anything! I don't want to sound like a wise old lady 8D

I usually don't RP very much, but I've tried doing things like sleeping at least 7 hours every night. I also never use fast travel, but sometimes I have a rule that I can only fast travel from one stable to another after I've bribed the owner. Also, nowadays I don't run and jump around in cities as much.
Usually it depends on how much time I've got to play, if I only have half an hour, I don't RP very much (except for my fast travel rule). But if I have several hours to play I slow down in cities, and perhaps just go to an inn and drink a bit and talk to some people.

I rp every character that I make off and on, depending on my mood. And while I don't always stick to rules like "no fast travel" or "sleep several hours a night" they all at least have some sort of background and moral structure.
My first character, Steve, was one that I made specifically with the intent of doing the both the MQ and Knights of the Nine. I started him off as a common thug that was constantly being thrown in jail. Eventually, he got mixed up in the whole Oblivion Crisis where he gained a sense of cosmic worth and went on to reestablish the Knights of the Nine.
Then he went a little venture to the Shivering Isles.
I've also created a character tailor made for the Dark Brotherhood. Just you're typical, scheming murderer.
Most recently, I've been playing around with a custom vampire race: Ruin, a girl who comes from a race of extremely powerful magic users. For unknown reasons, she is stripped of her identity and banished to another realm (Nirn), waking up in Vilverin. Confused, scared, and unstable she is approached by the residential bandits who are wondering how this girl got into their hideout, and what sort of loot she might be carrying. Losing control of her powers, she disintegrates the lot of them, then slowly makes her way outside to begin looking for answers in Tamriel...
So far, this is the most detailed I've gotten with background story. I'm going to try and create my own "MQ" so to speak, in which case I'll just be rping major events in her life, maybe with the help of a few mods.

I roleplay sometimes.
I have a really evil Bosmer - She's almost the boss for both the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves Guild. I only gain Infamy with her.
I have an Altmer as well and I only do good quests with her.
And recently I created a Nord (3rd Nord actually, I don't like to play as them but this one seems alright) and I'm using the "tough warrior" way. You know, the usual... Fighter's Guild, Arena, etc...
My first character, a Breton, is the boss of everything. A true champion
.................
I don't think too much about their stories, I just think about their guilds, actions and things like that. Guess that's not some kind of "hardcore" roleplay, huh.

i generally do roleplay in oblivion, although i do have a save in which i can just mess about in.
if i choose to roleplay, like i do on many saves, i usually;
change clothes daily, or three times a week,
get sleep,
eat breakfast,
relax in the tavern at nights if i'm not adventuring in the wild,
have a day off if i got a disease whilst exploring,
take off armour if i'm not in a situation where i don't need it (exept in the wild, where it remains on)
take my time in the game, i go at my own pace,
sell my loot only in the three brothers trade goods,
yeah i do alot, but i have no problem with fast travelling, although i would probably do it from the town gate.

I like to think that all the characters I created are in the same game. Like first I create the main characters who will be the lead in the story, and then I create the minor characters. I play with the main character the most, but from time to time, I play with the minor ones so they can catch up on events.
I created a Count that rules in Chorrol, but because he had so many enemies, he was murdered by a Khajiit assassin that I made. His daughter then takes over Chorrol as a Countess and she has a problem with High Lords and Ladies who want to take the position from her. I have so many characters created that is hard to keep on. I like to tell the story from different perspective, not just from the lead.

I made a religious/begger type guy who has no family lost his home and basicly wanders the wild. anyhow one day he is chased by wolves and comes upon a ruined prioy house in Skingrad (I actually was!).
Anyway after living there for a while, praying to the nine, he thinks the nine may have a pupose for him so he prays and keeps getting visions of Anvil, so he goes there meets the prophet and starts the pilgrims quest. anyway basicly he does the knight of nine quest. He is very humble and helps all he can, obeys the ten comandments of the nine ect.
After the quest he takes a knight on missions to help people, the latest one I did was the Roxy inn necromancer quest.
The quest was really fun as in the Cheydenhal chaple attack the Aurons ran out on the street, killed beggers and guards it was a very exciting and sad battle , its things like that that Make Oblivion so great.
I tend to roleplay all the time in every game I play, in Oblivion I don't do things like wash in a lake I just go by a jug and block with no weapon.
