Would you like open towns like in Morrowind, or separate cells like in Oblivion. I personally would like if they were open, but closed ones aren't bad.

What would I like? Open cities, of course.

What do I prefer between small open cities and big closed ones? Big closed ones.

I'd prefer them to be open. It isn't hard to picture CRT being defensible,
so just design huge doors and walls around the cities and they'll be fine.

But, I think, ultimately, it comes down to how well things can be rendered.

I think big closed ones and small open ones would do the trick. it would probably be easier on the engine and make it possible to put more npcs in the towns.

Fully large and open ones. Why? I think my PC can handle it. It would also make any invasion battle scene more realistic.

I don't think I need to tell you how games are being made to work on consoles first.

True, then I'll be on the modding team to open up all the cities. :Twisted Evil:

This. I do like how closed cells are easier (and safer!) to work with while modding, and the fact that you don't have to worry so much about rendering overload or nasty monsters killing important characters, but open cities "feel" nicer. If they bring back insane jumping like they had in Morrowind, open no doubt! But I can live with closed cities as long as they're big, and if there's a question of performance tradeoffs, I'll keep them closed.

Open.
Simply because that loading can be a bother and there is no reason for it not to be closed. Yes, there could be gates, but maybe they can be manned and function like a somewhat normal door than a teleporter to another cell.

Closed. Even though Oblivion's loading screens could be tiresome at times, they kept lag to a minimum and it seemed as if the amount of glitches was much lower in "closed" cells compared to open ones. Though im not sure what engine bethesda is running skyrim on, and if its a new one or even just a revamped Gamebryo. Gamebryo is the engine tes has been running on since Morrowind, along with the new fallout games. Its weird though, because it seems as if the the amount of problems with it increases dramatically after every new game. Just compare Oblivion to New Vegas.

In short, hoping for whatever the engine can run smoothly, if its closed then so be it.

I haven't heard of many issues of lag with the PC mod that opens cities for Oblivion. It is also very possible to create a game with open towns and have little lag. Although they were on separate engines, Red Dead Redemption had good sized towns with no lag.

I never said that games couldn't be made with open cities and have no lag, that would be absurd. Yes RDR has large open towns with no lag, but its a completely different game on a completely different engine; its hard to compare the two. And while the PC mods may have no problems with lag, its a PC and i know for sure that xbox's in general (and ps3's) had frame rate issues when rendering the wilderness in oblivion and fallout. Don't get me wrong if bethesda has skyrim running on both consoles and PC with open towns with no lag that would be great.

All i meant is that i would rather sacrifice open cities for less lag, but if the newer engine (i am assuming they are using a newer engine since oblivion) can have open cities with minimal lag than that would definitely be the better option.

I dont mean to come off as arguing, but merely discussing.

The average Xbox 360 is leagues better than my PC, and I confront no lag issues when I used Open Cities.

There are lag issues with Oblivion, on the Xbox, though.
I stopped playing earlier today, because after just 20 minutes it was lagging around Skingrad's Oblivion gate, and I got sick of "Loading Area..." popping up while I was trying to kill a Xivilai. -.-
It's installed, aswell, which is supposed to help.

I'm not too fussed, really, load screens break the immersion just as bad as saving does.

Everytime I enter the wilderness in any of Bethesda's latest games it has serious lag issues and occasional spikes.

Thats never happened to me before. I might get a bit of lag once every 2months or so.. Its a rare occasion for me

Smaller cities can be open, but the largest city or two should be closed to the outside but entirely open on the inside. Of course, that doesn't mean the guards can't open and shut the gates.

If they can have them open without compromising loading times or performance, then open ,all the way.

It would be fine with me if they were closed like in Oblivion as long as their sizes were as big and if they put in loads more of small villages like, Bleaker's Way, Hackdirt, Blankenmarch and Borderwatch..

Yes, we need more smaller settlements, not just one farm in the middle of nowhere with a map marker. Give me villages! :D

Yes, villages! Small, charming, inbred, quaint villages!

Open cities, naturally. Those walled-in cells in Oblivion were terrible. I imagine Nord cities as giant Skaal villages, similar in layout to Bruma.
