Holidays

I think holidays would be a great addition. I'm not very knowledgeable with the lore of holidays in Tamriel, but there has to be some worth adding. Either giving you special abilities for the day or buffs of some sort. I think it would also immerse the player more, and make the cities and villages seem much more alive.

Also checking the wiki for holidays after I'm done posting this.

Can't think of any off the top of my head,if they do exist. 'Twould still be a great addition,if they did decide to implement them.

Could always throw in a festival or something like that... that would be cool.

There is one at the end of harvest where the taverns give out free drinks all day and everybody just hangs out. I would be okay with conversing with drunk Nords for a full day. Maybe have a few tankards of mead myself.

The best holiday is the one that celebrates Mad Pelagius' life and death. Altough I think this holiday only applies to the Imperial City.........

The wiki says it's a tradition in High Rock sadly. But I don't see why it couldn't be celebrated elsewhere.

It would be fun if the player had a birthday... but that will create a backstory, so no. :D

Holidays could be cool. For some perverse reason I like the idea of choosing the PCs birthday - so then on that day I can go out to a river and strangle someone for their jewellery... "itsss my birthday"

a "Christmas" like holiday (not to offend anyone thats not christian) would be quite beautiful in skyrim's snowy setting. It would just add a whole new layer of immersion to an already extremely detailed series.

If you choose a birthsign (something other than The Serpent), your character has a definite month in which they were born. The game can assign randomly a day within that month for some special effect.

The Star Wars Christmas Special is what you get when you try to plug Christmas into a deep fantasy/sci-fi universe that would react horribly to crass holiday storytelling.

George Lucas vowed to smash every copy of the show that falls into his hands. If you and everyone you love sends him a copy, you will keep him busy enough so he never curses the world with Star Wars Episode VII: The Rise of the Ewoks.

The grunge girl from The Ring won't climb out of the TV and kill you, either. Bonus.

Christmas was Pagan by the way, but yes there should be a christmas like holiday, the day the Oblivion Crisis ended.

Well, no. Christmas is a Christian holiday that replaced earlier, pre-Christian festivals that were held on roughly the same date.

But I like the idea of a 'V day' style holiday to celebrate the end of the Oblivion Crisis. All the villagers gathered around, singing joyous songs ("oh champion, oh champion, hero so fair and lovely"), giving gifts, being in general high spirits... and then the dragons swoop down.

Well, for most people the Oblivion Crisis will have ended a different day, so for this work they must bring in save transfer, which i doubt they will.

I don't think the dragons would come during a festival, and Christmas is definatly Pagan which was stolen by Christians.

If i'm not mistaken, there was a holiday system implemented into Daggerfall, for the Deadric Princes. The "summoning" days or whatever.

I can't wait for my first Skyrim christmas, when Santa Nord will swoop down and deliver presents of sweet-rolls and candy to all the boys and girls of the province.

Why not? You think they would look down at all those tasty, tasty revellers milling in the streets and think to themselves 'Wow, lets not spoil their party, that would be rude'

Whilst this thread isn't around real world festivals and the origins thereof, Christmas is definitely a Christian festival, albeit one that draws heavily from its pre-Christian equivalents. And lets be honest, religions are a fluid concept - there was no monolithic 'Pagan' faith, rather a myriad of localised religious forms that heavily influenced each other, with cross-pollination occurring mostly along trade routes and paths of tribal migration.

Look at the similarities between the Greek and Roman pantheons, or for a better example, the fashion in which Sumerian beliefs influenced the Jewish holy stories. Noah and his ark? Try Utnapishtim from the Gilgamesh flood myth. Now just because the story of Noah was clearly influenced by a Sumerian myth, it doesn't mean the story is a Sumerian one. Similarly, the Christmas festival is Christian, despite the earlier festivals that occupied roughly the same time of the year, such as Yule.

Anywaaaay, back on topic, there is an absolutely huge list of holidays from the Daggerfall game here that would certainly add some flavour. I remember playing Oblivion and occasionally looking at the date, thinking to myself that it would be great if it actually meant something. Take the game Animal Crossing for example - even though that was tied into the real world time/date, the various holidays or festivals were a highlight.

I guess the Nord Santa would appear mounted in a boar, delivering beer, wine and meat to the kids but whatever...
