The Headgear Club/Discussion

Submissions are now CLOSED. This thread remains as a standpoint and hat discussion thread. Only in special cases can I now grant new membership.

By now some of you might have noticed the emergence of a new forum togetherness - the Headgear Club (Yes, Veck, the Headgear club) - formed by myself and the eminent HatofMadness on a complete and utter whim. The aim of this club is to introduce a sense of camaraderie made even closer by our shared love for headgear. At the moment the members stand as follows:-
Tom10320 - The Founding Fez Father
HatofMadness - The Sorting Hat Administrator
Dark Lord - The Fedora
Argonanza - The Grand Trilby
The Raven - The Top Hat
Jakarius321 - The Bandana
ShadowWarrior - The Bag on Fire
Hydranakus - The Liberty Hat
Leilah - The Hairstyle
themasterofpuppets - The Forage Hat
If you'd like to be a part of this eminent society, then please drop me a PM outlining your request and preferably proof of some kind of hat. If you've got a baseball cap, that's fine, but bear in mind that it has to be an awesome baseball cap to qualify for membership. We do not accept Stetsons, beanies, Busbies or Tricornes, and membership is limited to eleven people, so first come first served.
The signature pattern follows the old (defunct) Brotherhood pattern. For example, I am now 'The Founding Fez Father of the Headgear Club', minus quotes. At some point in the future I may consider image macros and/or a standard HC logo, but for now, let us unite under a common Puggaree. To heads, my friends!
---
Here's the bit of the thread that stops it from getting immediately locked - the Discussion session. This is for all types of hats and headgear, from bandanas to shapkas and back via mortarboards. What do you like about hats? What do they add to your clothing experience? Me, I wear a Fez when I'm being stupid and a Fedora to go with my trench coat when it's cold outside and there's no kind of atmosphere. Just, in general, what are hats to you? Please don't apply for membership here - that's just silly.

I love my Trilby. Not only is it stylish and looks awesome, but it also somehow puts me in a good mood and gives me confidence when I wear it. It was a gift from my very cool cousin.
Headgear Club forever!

Let's keep the thread to the hat discussions, shall we? I'm bracing myself for the trickle flood of PMs that will no doubt storm my inbox tonight.
What is it that makes a hat a viable piece of clothing? Why do we put a thing on our head? It can't just be to look super cool, at least, not always. I wonder where the origins of the hat lie...

someone got hot one day and said, Argh, i want the sun out me eyes!

I haven't a hat yet, but in [unknown amount of time] I inherit an old (around 90 years) top hat and a bowler hat.
Sirs, from now on, call me Mentlegen Rhaviewoos.
The downside is, that when I get the hats, my grandparents are dead. Yup.
I hate how people say "hats are stupid" and "hats look dumb"...wtf? Hats are [&@%!] awesome.

Well, if it was raining, I'd wear a Fedora rather than a Fez, if that's what you mean.

Mexico is sunny. Therefore big, sun-blocking sombreros.
New Guinea has lots of Birds of Paradise. Therefore big freakin' Bird of Paradise- feather hats.
The list goes on..

no i mean like, you wont find a New York Yankee Fitted cap in africa.( that could be a complete ignorant statement, and stereotyping, not my intention)
i take it hoods are included as well?
i want a hood, but not like a hood on a sweater or jacket, just like a hood. that covers your throat, shoulders, neck, and head obviously lol.
anywhere to help?
we could post hat links...

also, i wonder if any of the Bots are interested in joining... they'll read this eventually.

Umm, yeah, headgear. I quite like modern Trilbys, the kind of thing Pete Doherty wears, bu I liked them before he was famous. Sadly I can't seem to go anywhere without being called an Indie prick wearing that now, so it's only a special occasion thing. I have a bandana somewhere that I wore once as a joke, but I haven't worn it since. I haven't got a fez or top hat, but I'd like one. I'm probably going to get a snazzy new Fedora soon, so that people don't mistake me for an NME fan. One type of headwear I'm not a fan of is the dappy hat, mainly because of the grade A idiots who wear them.

I visited a WW2 museum a couple of months ago and I saw some
epic Officer hats. Officer hats are very close second to my beloved Trilby.

I wore one of those to shooting once as a joke. I came out with the top score, mainly because everyone else had fallen about laughing. Yet another reason why hats are useful and cool.

What's that Russian fur hat called again? 'Cause that's got to be one of the most epic bits of headgear from other cultures, second only to Native American headdress.

That's either the shapka or the ushanka. I get to wear one of those for the play I'm doing next week, but unfortunately I don't get to keep it. They are
really warm.
Incidentally, shapka written in Russian is hilarious.

My dad's got an ushanka made out of ferret pelts. It's really warm and nice to wear in winter.
