I think it is when you're a noob and you want to explore everything and doing every miscellaneous quest. I remember my first times when I was exploring the Niben Bay, going into every dungeon in the Great Forest and visit every inn I've encountered. I didn't care about mages guild, fighters guild, main quest or anything else that now is essential.
Ahh, good old times

As with every rpg, the first few hours of wandering around clueless. Which for me, with Oblivion, happened to be exploring Skingrad and The West Weald.

I'm by no means a noob but I've just spent my first real amount of time exploring the Jerall Mountains.
Amazing..........

could not have been said any better.
some of my greatest memories of holding a controller bring me back to exiting the sewers for my first time, and the aftermath that ensued.
i think i jumped off the dock, crossed the lake, ran up the hill, and encountered a female redguard bandit wearing glass amor who started attacking me.
i remember thinking to myself: what did i do to you! you didnt even give me the chance to say hi!
and might i say, when i was running up that hill, i was awstruck, i completely felt like i had been dropped into a new world and was cautious with my every move, trying to familiarize myself with these completely new and never before seen surroundings.....greatness in a box that would be Oblivion.

My best time was coming out of the sewers and noobing around all the way up to chorrol and getting arrested after only half an hour of play time for stealing a horse.

Yes, horse-napping... I remember being arrested for that in some inn or other right after I first started out. I was foolish enough to resist arrest at my meagre level and with my meagre equipment. Found the guards freaking scary for a long time after that.
Now it seems to me that I have re-discovered Oblivion because I totally gave up fast-travelling and took to random adventuring instead of meticulously following my journal and completing each and every quest in it. Now that I also have the Natural Environments mod (thanks to my Photographers Guild guildmates, especially Jakarius321 and krisCrash, for all their wonderful mod suggestion!) I'm gonna rock

Yep. That red icon that nobody notices until they hear "Stop! Thief!"
It happened to me in Colovian Traders in Skingrad. I accidentally knocked a bow off the counter so, being little old helpful me, I went to use Grab to put it back. But the instant I touched it, Gunder yelled for the Guards! I was thinking, "WHAT? You... You... SWINE! I was trying to be HELPFUL!"
Of course, that was a few years ago before I realised that if you move something in a cell but don't pick it up, it goes back to its original position when the cell resets after 3 days. All you have to do is stay away.
And yes. I also fell afoul of, "Hmm. I wonder how fast a Legion horse is?"

The first time i played, i finished the sewers, and traveled to the Imperial City(as you do

).
When i got there i was admirering the Legion armour, so i decided to grab a set after killing its owner...
As soon as i whacked the guy once, there must of been 15 guards to back him up. At that point i decided to run away

MEGA FAIL!!

My favourite area is Blackwood. I love all the lakes and ponds, especially and sunrise and sunset. Nice and swampy for a "swamp thing" like me!

At least you knew about the grab function. Took me ages to work that button out.
I remember my first steps in Oblivion - I wrote them into the UESP blog entry I did - wandering around the Imperial city in shock, collecting stuff, killing guards and wondering why Methredhel could only be knocked unconscious by my warhammer. I wish I could go back to those times - it's been too long.

I remember when Cyrodiil was this huge expanse of land, where I had no idea where anything was, and spent hours wandering around just seeing what was there.
Now, Cyordill is tiny, and I know where everything is, and the magic is gone.

First time I leave the sewers, I follow my Quest, and head off to Weynon Priory, to deliver the Amulet. I had to reload 3 times (from death) when the Bandit asked for my money at Fort Ash... before I decided to do some adventuring to get better gear.
First time I hear "Stop Theif"... Sitting at an Inn, just finishing a bottle of Cheap Wine... As I get up to leave... an item from the Bar ends up in my Pocket. (you hit the space bar to get out of chairs, but you also pick up items with the space bar, and I didn't notice that I had the "hand of 5-finger discount" icon).

I always thought that the most beautiful part of Oblivion was just out in the forest. Most of it's filler, but it's still pretty amazing. It''s either that or the Land of Mania in the Shivering Isles expansion pack.

The most beautiful part of Oblivion is Argonian women probably the amazing scenery, specifically the Gold Coast region. Can't wait for the next game to step things up further.

I remember when I first realized there was a mages guild and a full magic system I totally freaked out. I was anxious to get inside the Arcane University, I killed the guard to see if he hold the key

The most beautiful part of Cyrodiil are, in my opinion, the golden plains near Anvil.
I just love running around them, hunting and taking in the serene, enchanting atmosphere.

Ehm, I mean, err... I gotta go!

the first time through oblivion is awesomeness. i remember thinking, this is definitely one of the greatest and most massive games ever created, i can't wait to see what is around the next bend. (i had the same reaction with fallout 3) my favorite area was the jerall mountains and the valley regions north of the black marsh. great landscapes, great ruins and caves and forts to explore. some great daedric shrines too, including boethia and peyrite.
once you become an expert (after 200 hours of play!) you get wrapped up in the schemes and going through the motions of acquiring the magical items etc. but that first experience wandering around is really great, i still remember it. what i remember most is being stopped for unintentional B&E, resisting arrest, and killing the guard who was beating me with his sword at stonewall shields in the market district within twenty minutes of exiting the sewer. that's when i started visiting this site (and others) to learn more about the game.

I think it would have to be looking out over the sea at any of a number of locations, I prefer to not stray far from Anvil and the beaches there.

there I was, thinking I explored all of the map becasue there weren't any gaping holes between my land markers that I hadn't explored so the whole effect of the detail had worn off. then as I was wandering I saw some stairs I'd never encountered, hmm, I followed them to a path them more stairs, I was led from grassy hills to the snowy peaks, still the paths and the stairs kept going, on and on. then finally I found a place hidden from the rest of the world, the Shrine of Hermaeus Mora. I thought it was a wonderful sight despite how monotone it may have been.
now on the subject of early gameplay crime...
I played Morrowind a lot, almost never used 'sneak' becasue it made you too slow. in Oblivion I was completely fine with the sneaking speed. so I left it on. then I "talked" to a Guard...
