Well the IE9 beta is finally out, curious on how many of you will give it a test run or stick with the regular browser of choice (Firefox, Safari ETC).

Depends really, what can it do that IE8 can't? because I found firefox a lot more useful and easier to use then Internet explorer.

Microsoft is saying it's faster and superior to Ie8, trying it atm and it is pretty snappy for me, but I don't like the tabs being on the same level as the address bar personally.

Well I'm not to bothered about speed, my internet is pretty damn rapid for an English internet provider. When you say that the tabs are at the same level as the address bar, do you mean that it is all cluttered up? I really can't stand things being pretty much on top of each other.

Here's 2 screenshots... the top one is what IE 9 beta is set to show by default, it's nice and clean.
The second one has the favorites and command bar on which is where it get's a little messy but it's not to bad.

Screen 2:

Edit: The first screenshot also doesn't have the status bar on, not sure if that was on when I downloaded or not.

Hmm thanks for the screen-shots, there actually more useful then I would of thought. I like the look of it when there is no added tool-bar, but I don't know why I don't like the second one.
I have a feeling it is to do with my Firefox browser having tabs at the bottom and my 'favourites tool-bar' above that and then finally the address bar above that. Very uncluttered, easy to access and I like being able to personalize the look of my browser.
Maybe when the final version comes out, then I will give it a try. You never know what will be different by then.

Yeah, Another thing to note to going from a 20 / 100 on the Acid 3 test (internet explorer 8.) to a 95 / 100 (The other 5 are non-standard and dont need to be completed) on IE 9 Beta is a huge jump in the right direction for web standards.

Unless if it can support CSS3 or HTML5 better than FireFox 4 or Chrome, I don't care.
And even then, people will still be using IE6, 7, and 8.

Can someone tell me what an Acid 3 test is please? and what Kestral means by CSS3 and TML5? Sorry but I only really know the basics and a few higher bits of internet functions.

--->HTML5/CSS3-compliant, GPU-accelerated web-browser with a multi-threaded Javascript compiler = IE9
Using some of the Test drive tools Microsoft gave us I tried out the IEfish tank, Got 1000 fish at 1366 x 655 60FPS in IE9. (Javascript)
Going to try some YouTube video's in HTML 5 and see how it handles it.

Appreciated, I can be lazy as anything when it comes to looking things up... then again most of that makes no sense to me whatsoever

The issue is that is
how compliant it is. If it does a good deal, good for them. It doesn't change the market share all to IE9, there will still be people who use 6-8.

Well of course considering you cannot run IE9 without Vista or Windows 7, This is a step in the right direction from what past versions of IE have been like. (The faster loading etc, not the only being able to run it with Microsoft's newer OS's.)

So after a day of watching YouTube in only HTML5 in IE9, i'll say it's quite like watching it in flash... only with no ads on the videos and the ability to slow or speed them up which is quite useful if a video has something that goes by fast and you want to see what it was.

WHAT A BUNCH OF LIES
No, sorry. I just had to. Compared it to Opera on the SunSpider test, it was around 4 times slower. For more comparison, Chrome was about as good as Opera last time I checked, and Firefox was like twice as slow. IE9 still feels very responsive, though, which is a nice change ...
When it comes to HTML5,
this test showed Chrome was ahead of the bunch and Opera and Firefox were almost equal. IE9 didn't do horrible, but was a little behind. Testing the browser on Canvas, IE9 is WAY WAY WAY WAY ahead any of the tested browsers. A completely different user experience. Where the other browsers lagged horribly, IE was smooth and enjoyable. (!)
Anyway, I am impressed by the new IE. The UI is horrible (imo), but at least they got the engine running. Haven't tested it for more than 15 minutes or so.
These versions were used:
IE9 Beta 64-bit
Opera 10.62
Firefox 3.6.10
Chrome 6.0.427.59
EDIT: Just tested it out with Firefox 4 beta as well, and it had much better HTML5 support. It probably used GPU-acceleration as well, because the performance was pretty much on par with IE9 on the couple of tests I ran. They also fixed the UI, it is much better now. I'm ecstatic.

I'm one of those "Couldn't care less" guys: I've used Opera for a couple of years, it works fine, it looks good, no need for me to change, especially when I have all security packs neatly together.

Remember that Microsoft has been going "IE9 IS THE JESUS CHRIST OF BROWSERS OMFGOMFGOMFG" before IE8.

What part of my post are you referring to? If you mean the lies Microsoft spew out about IE9's performance, my post still stands. They claimed the BETA was as fast as Chrome and Opera (and faster than Firefox), which clearly isn't the case. Apart from that, I said I am impressed by what Microsoft has done to their browser.
Kestral wrote:Remember that Microsoft has been going "IE9 IS THE JESUS CHRIST OF BROWSERS OMFGOMFGOMFG" before IE8.
I think you are forgetting something. According to Microsoft, IE7 and IE8 were also supposed to be "THE JESUS CHRIST OF BROWSERS OMFGOMFGOMFG", as far as I can remember. I can still remember when IE7 was released, and everyone was all hyped up about the "revolutionary" tabs.

Why does it look like I've seen IE9 before? Oh yeah, because they stole the UI from Chrome.

Quite possible. Copyright breach doesn't concern those who have copyrights.

Everyone is. Dunno about Safari though.
Wait, didn't Chrome steal from Opera?

Compared to past IE versions IE9 is much MUCH better than its predecessors and is the direction Microsoft has to keep taking, it's still a beta and we can send them feedback on what we think needs improved etc, it may get better, it may not, only time will tell.
