Glitch trying to join the Dark Brotherhood

This glitch is probably not unique. Maybe someone has advice on how to avoid the glitch. I know that to join, I need to do something unsanctioned, get contacted, exchange the wine and then report to the designated contact. The problem is, once I have done, what I am supposed to do, I am unable to talk to the contact. I know it is the correct person, because I tried failing the quest on purpose. The result is, that I get reprimanded by the contact.
What I tried so far, is taking care of the guards in another province and then fast travel to a different province, however, there was no difference. I have also tried using that fix save tool. It did not seem to have any effect. The tool fixed some issues I had in talking to the order of the raven after joining, and I figured it might be the same issue. Apparently, it was not. Is my savegame already too corrupt to join them? I would appreciate some suggestions.
