Destruction spell bug?

Trying to give Daggerfall another go... having quite a lot of fun with it so far. But I'm running into a problem I can't figure out...
Whenever I try to cast a destruction spell, say "shock" nothing really happens. My magicka does get depleted, but otherwise nothing. No animation or visible damage to enemies. Is this some kind of bug? Or am I asking a common question, lol? I did google it, and found one thread on a forum that asked the same question, but nothing on it really helped.
Any ideas?
Edit: I figured it out. It's silly. For some reasons entering cursor mode and activating an enemy doesn't do it, but pressing "activate center object" will.
