What's going on with Fort Sutch?!

Was just on my way past to do a Fighter's Guild quest, but an Ob gate showed up nearby, so decided to go and close it.

Which is when the war began!

Fort Sutch seems to have a garrison there, and the fools that they are decided that it was up to them to go and "hold the line"! Which meant running up to the gate and hordes of Ob monsters pouring out (I haven't actually seen so many all tog in any place before!) until they'd slaughtered all of the Imperial Legion Guards.

Decided to just avoid it after a few tries, as it seemed to be me turning up that triggered the battle. Before I got too close, I could see the Guards just standing around the fort, and the usual 3 Daedra standing around the Ob Gate.

Fort Sutch is supposed to be full of Mercenaries according to the Wiki.

Fort Sutch is related to a DB quest. I have no idea what could Imperial Legion do there - it should be definitely maruders and nothing else.

It def seemed like it was supposed to be a staged battle. I even tried later circling right around and approaching the Ob gate from the opp side from Fort Sutch, but as soon as I got near the gate, the Boys in Iron started their suicide run!

The Legion are posted all around the "above ground" part of the ruin, I didn't go underground, so it prob is still full of Mercenaries.

There is an Imperial Legion Captain or something as well as about 5 standard Guards. If I speak to any of the plebes, they just say something like they were sent out there to hold back the invasion and the Captain knows what's going on. If I then go and speak to him he says something vaguely along the lines of "It's good that you're here, we could certainly use your help to hold back the ravening hordes". And off he runs to certain chaos and death!

I've never seen so many creatures come out of an Ob gate before, or so fast. Maybe only 10 or so at a time (there were a few Xivilai clannfear spawns incld), but what with that and the Guards, it was pretty difficult to keep track of everything! And if the Guards survived longer, I think the creatures would just keep pouring out of the gate.

I am currently doing (in my own sweet time!) the "Allies for Bruma" side quest. Should be getting Tiber Septim's Armour as well, and I'm sure I'll get around to that one of these days, it's a good thing Martin is a patient man.....

Have just chk'd and I haven't kept a save of when I went that way, I avoided going near Fort Sutch in the saved game I have. I am just choosing my Sigil Stone at a nearby gate though, so when I've done that I can swing by Fort Sutch again and see if the same thing gets triggered. It seemed so purposefully staged that I'd be surprised if it wasn't.

Sure enough, just tried it again, and the same thing happened. The soldiers say that they were "ordered out to attack the Daedra coming out of that gate".

Six soldiers incl'in the Captain, and I counted at least 10 Deadra fighting, but as at the time I was being simultaneously attacked by 4 Xivilai, one Spider Daedra and a Daedroth, I was a little preoccupied......

I saw the same thing. but that line is said by all guards by a gate. they just got raped by the daedra and I didnt stand a chance against them. at first I thought the gate was fireing fire balls at me because I didnt see the daedra yet.

If you can survive longer than the Guards, you should be ok. As soon as all the Guards are dead, the Daedra stop pouring out of the Gate, and the Guards die pretty quick!

Then you only have to deal with the dozen Daedra that had already come through.... I haven't seen any of the Guards manage to kill any of them, though they do at least usually wound them a little.

That's what my "Keep Chumps Alive" spell is for.

Shield 100% 60 seconds. Almost 300 mana :)

Now that sounds like a good spell to have! Though I guess it prob req's an Alteration skill of 100?! Is it "on touch"?

Shield 100% is a waste. Total protection is capped at 85%. That is, if you have 15 points in armour, then cast 75% shield, you max out at 85% and 5% from the spell get wasted.

It is a Miscellaneous Side Quest:

Attack on Fort Sutch: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Attack_on_Fort_Sutch

I've always done the DB Bad Medicine Quest, at Fort Sutch, befroe starting the Main Quest, so never had a reason to go back. I usually get tired of closing gates at around 20 or so. The Dagon Shrine (Main) Quest is the Trigger.

With the second player I had, I wandered by there, after completing the Main quest. The Gate was closed, the Legion Guards were still there, with only a handfull of Daedra. They handled it pretty quickly, and only one Guard died. They stayed there even after all the Daedra were killed.
