God, Matt, you are so unlikable!

"Elves are way too good for humans"

Pshh! It's that kind of attitude that drove the Ayleids into enslaving the human people. :P

Well... this is news to me.

I'll try and tone it down. I'll see how far I can push it. Ashriel will keep being his natural self, that's a great medium.

No, it's okay to be a racist when it comes to elves and humans. I am incredibly loyal to elves (as you can see by my status), but the fact that I'm a human this time makes it all different.

Peter, having rested himself for a period of several hours, departed from his tent and seated himself at the base of a tree located just outside of the group's camp. Although it was obvious their superior officers would not have left the tents entirely unprotected, Peter felt it was his duty to take the position of watchman, for at least a portion of the night.

Besides, he had been unable to sleep well- understandable, given the violent events of the day. Peter shortly considered how the others were faring, emotionally; he made no plans to act on his assumptions, however, having no sort of experience as a psychologist. Rifle loaded, but not made ready, Peter carefully eyed the surroundings of the camp.

Spoiler:
Hey Duhmeister Meisterduh, could we introduce another character? Not permanent, but reoccurring every few dozen pages? Not even in person, but in the form of a letter or something. I thunked an idea for Ashriel but it'd be fine if that wasn't allowed.
Ashriel, still horribly disturbed by what he heard and where his imagination was taking him, decided to crawl out of the back of the tent and wander into the forest. It was less crowded in the forest.

Ashriel wandered for a while until he found a shallow flowing river. He stepped in the river, bare footed. The river was ice cold as he suspected it would be.

Ashriel closed his eyes and imagined the water was ice, and he was back in the tundras of northern Andia with his Frost Elf community, and the Vega clan. Ashriel dwelt on his current situation. He was in a group he didn't even want to be in, doing a task too big for him, surrounded by people he didn't get along with, yet he remained. Why? At that moment, Ashriel was the closest he ever came to just leaving it all behind and wandering the rural areas of Andia and eventually returning to the ice, hopefully there would be a hidden Frost Elf settlement he could live in. The Rebels could surely fare without him, right?

Another thing he considered was that with his family gone, Barvel being the latest to die, Ashriel was the last of the Vega line, a noble Frost Elf family for over three thousand years. Ashriel needed not only to survive for himself, he needed to survive to rebuild the Vega legacy that was previously destroyed... and even add on to it a little.

Spoiler:
I guess so. As long as it doesn't get in the way of the storyline.
"It's madness, isn't it?" Logan asked Peter as he lit a cigar. "How it all just...crumbles one day. That's all it took. One day. At least 1/4 of the rebels are dead, the rest are scattered, and the greatest leader of our time is gone. Honestly, man...I don't know what to do. Hopefully the One will give us some type of path to follow. But even if he does, we're still short at least a thousand rebel soldiers. May the Old God bless us, mate."

Spoiler:
No, but it will make Ashriel less of a [@#@] ... interested? :P

Ahh... time to leave, I'll write it later. Edit: Never-mind.

Edit edit: Sorry in advance... I got carried away again...
Ashriel was still standing in the river when he felt a hand on his back, and he got shoved into the water. His first thought it could have been Valentin, Gladro or Horny ha as his face submerged in the river. He picked himself back up, ready for a fight, but realized he'd left his equipment back at camp.

"OK, what's the big idea?" Ashriel asked as he spun around to meet his 'assailant'. What he saw was a lean Frost Elf woman, who looked to be around his age. She looked like Ashriel too; she had long blonde hair going all the way to her waist and large dark brown eyes. She had a green and white tunic and baggy brown pants with sandals. Most notably, the Frost Elf had a wooden bow and some sharp looking arrows slung across her back.

"What are you doing alive?" Ashriel asked, in shock.

"Nice to see you too, cousin." The Frost Elf woman replied.

"No, that's not it... you were the tax collector back in our apartment in the Empire City! I thought I killed you the time you collected taxes twice in the same day." Ashriel said, and the Frost Elf laughed and pushed Ashriel playfully.

"Ash, you're such an ass." She said and laughed.

"So... how's it going, Ashley?" Ashriel asked.
Spoiler:
Yes. Her name is Ashley. And his name is Ashriel. I could not for the life of me think of anything better after debating it with the mounted fish on the wall who shares the secrets of life with me.
"That's really all you have, Ashriel? After over six years apart, that's all you say?" Ashley asked.

"What can I say? Other than ask you how the hell you're alive, which is rather rude." Ashriel pointed out.

"You thought I died when the Shards invaded Arriash, didn't you?" Ashley asked. Ashriel nodded. "Well, I didn't. My parents and I, and our uncle Owen and Aunt Beru ha, and their son Walter all escaped with about a dozen other citizens. We survived, Ash, and we rebuilt. Deep in the glaciers of Andia's tundras... lies New Arriash, safe from the Shards."

Ashriel whistled. "Wow. Why couldn't I have gone with you? My dumb parents decided to take me and run in the opposite direction."

"I haven't seen your mother while I was... observing you. What happened to her?" Ashley asked.

"Schiana died while traveling to Empire City. Barvel died when the Shards murdered him." Ashriel said coldly.

"Oh. I'm... sorry to hear that." Ashley said, avoiding eye contact.

"How are your parents, Clyde and Zoel?" Ashriel asked.

"Dead as well. Clyde was killed in an accident while building New Arriash, and Zoel died when she was hunting. A... a Shard patrol found her. If they killed her and left, we would have met the same fate as Arriash. But Zoel killed every last Shard in the patrol before succumbing to her wounds." Ashley hung her head.

"Sorry." Ashriel said and his cousin just nodded. "So... Ashley! What are you doing here?" He finally asked.

"I've been ordered by the leader of New Arriash, uncle Owen, to track your family down and bring them back. I found you in Empire City, and it took me two weeks to finally get in. When I finally did, it took me another month to find your apartment. But the day I went there... the place was swarming with Shards. When they finally left, taking a few random citizens with them, I went in and found your old room, and, I'm sorry, the corpse of Barvel. I could only assume that the Shards took you and your mother with them." Ashley sighed. "I'm glad I was at least half right." She said and smiled.

"Sorry to interrupt, but... did you do anything with the body? Of my father?" Ashriel asked.

"Yes." Ashley said. "I burned the body. But what happened after... was just great, Ash." The Elf smiled. "The fire spread quicker than I thought, and half the apartment burned down." Ashley said and smiled. "It took over thirty Shards to keep the fire from raising the entire block. The look on their faces..."

"Ashley." Ashriel interrupted. "Topic. Straying."

"Right. Well, I had to track you of course. I followed the limos as closely as I could, ready to bust you out at the soonest chance I got. As you know... someone beat me to it. Those Rebel types. They took you. I approached one of the officers, but she told me to leave. After I insisted, she prevented me from following you... by hitting me. Hard. And knocking me out." Ashley seemed mad now.

"But what those idiot rebels didn't realize, was that the Shards would return and investigate the scene. They found me, unconscious, and imprisoned me. Bastards tried to get me to talk for six months. Six months! I finally escaped during a really bad thunderstorm. The rest of the six months... I spent tracking down the Rebels. When I finally got hold of one, I slowly went from Rebel to rebel, until it became rebel base to rebel base. Since I seemed to be cursed in my travels, when I finally found the base you were staying at, it was attacked. I watched that happen from large hill half a mile away. I followed the rebels that escaped, and lucky me, I finally traced you to this camp. I watched you, from the trees, for a while. May I repeat, Ashriel, you're such an ass." She joked and pushed him again. "And that Hremai person didn't seem so nice either. But whatever! We can leave! It's time to go back to the ice." Ashley smiled.

Ashriel sighed, laughed a bit, and shook his head in denial. "I can't believe I'm saying this... but I can't go back with you, cuz." Ashriel went on to explain everything that happened over the course of the entire year.

"So you're doing a task you don't even want to do, that is too big for you, unarmored and barely armed, with people who hate you... but you're staying?" Ashley summed it up with disbelief.

"Pretty much what I think on a regular basis, but... yes." Ashriel shrugged.

Ashley was a silent for a while before breaking out in a huge smile. "I'm so proud of you!" She said and hugged Ashriel.

Ashriel laughed and pushed Ashley back. "Egh, stay away, buttbreath!" Ashriel laughed.

"Says the buttface." Ashley answered with a laugh.

"You're the one who's scared of seals." Ashriel joked.

"At least I'm not allergic to them, bloaty!" Ashley countered and laughed when Ashriel's face grew red. "My god... this is almost like old times." Ashley smiled. "If only it was old times." She smiled sadly.

"So... want to come back and see the gang?" Ashriel asked.

"No... I'm not sure I want to talk to them. Besides, I finally need to get back to New Arriash with the news. They probably think I'm dead." Ashley said.

Peter nodded slowly, his stance remaining one of vigilance even as he spoke.

“I'm glad to hear that someone else is on the same page as myself,” He stated dryly, gesturing vaguely toward the group's tents.

“Some of the others seem so... lighthearted. So upbeat. As if nothing had happened. General Sanchez was one hell of a leader, and simply an excellent man. No two ways about it.” Peter removed his own smoke from a shirt pocket and held it out so that Logan might light it.

“Yeah. I'm not too sure how we're going to get things done like this.”

Lithnilillin felt a surge of air blow at his back. He shrugged and walked in the same direction as the wind blew. Soon, he was back at camp and inside the tent. He looked down on Aarys and Valentin, sneering. They could have at least looked for him a bit.

The howling of a wolf is heard about a mile away from Ashriel and Ashley. It becomes cold. The sun has disappeared under the horizon. Snow lightly begins to fall upon the surface of Andia.

"Snow! Do you see that, Ashriel?" Ashley asked happily. "I love the snow. I'm rooting for a blizzard!" She said giddily.

"It's a nice change." Ashriel agreed. "Someone's smiling down on us."
Ashley shot Ashriel a look. "You believe in that? Barvel's teachings finally got through to you?"
Ashriel remained silent.
