considering Bethesda isn't even making one MMO, I dont see why they would stop and focus on a MMO.
So where is my dream? It is the continuation of reality. But where is my reality? It is at the end of your dream.

The all part of the one company, If the company thinks it will be more profitable to make an MMO they'll do it. But back to the original question could someone link me to were it says there giving up up on ES singleplayer after ES6.

Bethesda sold the rights so it doesn't matter.

I have seen no concrete proof that Bethesda is giving up on SP ES games, hell I haven't even seen the rumors.Velvet LeChance wrote:The all part of the one company, If the company thinks it will be more profitable to make an MMO they'll do it. Re: Dumbing games down
i thought the time of the big MMOs was coming to an end with the star wars
if theres only one TES left, i am torn between wanting Summerset isle and Elsewheyr. Best case scenario, perhaps the DLC for Skyrim will be the Altmer lands - that would be amazingly amazing. The bosmer land sounds intriguing with its walking tree cities, but it's full of bosmer, so..
all this talk of MMOs does highlight how games have moved on from in-depth scripted stories, MMO relies much more on human interraction to come up with the goods, effectively providing the stage on which we play - is that dumbing down..?
if anyone has played Douglas Adams' Starship Titanic, they will know where games could have gone, pure text driven adventure which, at its best, seemed to converse with you like a human storyteller would

true,
i got the impression that new comers to the MMORPG market would not be looking to achieve such greatness, so you would probably find TES MMO filling a niche market rather than looking to topple WoW etc
it's something i read about last January in "edge" or "game" magazine, i will try and find the article and ref it

Gaming ... going the way of our public education and school system ...tooled for lazy kids ... the dumber the better ... the less effort required, the higher the "success" rate ... "idiot proofing" is what we call it in engineering and almost all OS and computer related software has followed the same trend.

Morrowind is my favorite ES game but I don't think I could say that without mods. Skyrim is my second favorite but if mods are taken out of the question it would befirst. While I think that compared to morrowind it is somewhat dumbed down gameplay wise but the lore and immersion are still there.

Re: Dumbing games down
I actually wouldnt mind if the games finished with TES 6 , it could be a story with one final Climactic storyline that ends with the destruction of the thalmor , and with Tamriel being United at last , or possibly , even the destruction of Tamriel , though i highly doubt that would happen
but i hope , and i pray that Bethesda does not focus on CHIM in the next game ! i hate CHIM

Re: Dumbing games down
Morrowind's depth came from the fact that it had an amazing storyline, a ton of guilds, many unique environments, a nice range of armours, well developed lore, a lot of books on obscure topics, great atmosphere etc. etc.SajuukKhar wrote:What a lot of people forget is that a metric [&@%!] ton of Morrowind's, and indeed most older games, "depth" came from the hardware and graphical limitations of the day.
A game is going to appear to have more depth then it does when Devs had to place menus inside of menus inside of menus because hardware limitations prevented them from just making one menu, and in more gameplay related things, older RPGs HAD to use attribute systems because computers couldn't handle real-time combat, and when you throw 5000000 numbers in someone's face it appears to have more depth then when all of that stuff is hidden and people can actually do the combat themselves.
Most of the supposed lost "depth" of video games is depth lost because computers dont suck anymore, and most of that depth was fake depth anyways.
If you don't like Morrowind, fine. But stop trying to dismiss everyone else's reasons for liking it as BS.

He didn't dismiss anything, he listed several things that gave Morrowind its depth and were in no way "fake" (and had absolutely nothing to do with hardware limitations). Disagreeing with someone and explaining why you disagree is not the same as dismissing their opinion. On the other hand "bah, it's all fake" doesn't seem like much of an argument to me...

Re: Dumbing games down
Bethesda fixed a lot of things, added a couple things, polished others, but they also removed a lot such as polearms and consolidated too many skills. Although I prefer Skyrims leveling system over Oblivion the lack of a few features puts me off... I really do like the dragon battles though but the lack of a medium armored spearman didn't make sense to me as that was the most common soldier in ancient/historical warfare in almost every country for over a century. Bethesda need to stop cutting so much chaff off of TES series because eventually it will end up like Fable 3 if this happens and we don't want that... Look at Hearthfire for instance lol... I'm not saying I don't like Hearthfire but I still think that the Time spent on it could have been better used on making the game more solid, such as adding polearms lol. Or fixing the "rain-falling-through-solid-objects issue" Sorry I just had to add that because that's a pet peeve of mine.
On another note... The Old Republic sucks.

I'd just like to say, what some would call "dumbing down" others might call 'making more accessible.' The more buyers Bethesda attracts to the series, the larger their production budgets will become and the greater the priority placed on the franchise ...

I see what your saying and it makes sense for skills I guess now that I think about it. But they should have still stop removing so many creatures from the series, I mean yeah it probably takes a lot of time to program them and do the models but it just makes the game feel deeper. 90% of dungeons shouldn't be either Draugr or Bandit hideouts if you catch my drift, Morrowind had a sense of mystery because you didn't know what to expect.
But yeah I do agree with what you said but Bethesda needs to make a balance where the game is easy to play and a beginner can do fine but a more experienced player can thrive and that's hardly the case at the moment in my opinion and they should have made runes a bit more versatile and did self made disposable traps so you can use more advanced tactics.

This is the unfortunate truth, really. And it's not just with Bethesda. Lots of other companies are doing it too, which makes me sadOblivionDuruza wrote:I'd just like to say, what some would call "dumbing down" others might call 'making more accessible.' Re: Dumbing games down
don't be sad, it's human culture - you forget (or possibly werent aware) that people who played morrowind 10 years ago were playing a game some thought was 'just' a dumbed down computer versions of 'real' role playing gamesBlackDrake wrote:This is the unfortunate truth, really. after a while you just have to stop hanging on to the 'golden age of gaming' ideal, and enjoy the good points of what people have to offer now
accessibility is a good way of putting it, but it shouldn't be seen as a euphemism for trivialisation for the sake of the lowest common denominator. Popular culture now contains excellent stories like for example game of thrones, skyrim, the walking dead, a real improvement compared to the mainstream offerings in the past.. These stories wouldn't be with us if sci fi/fantasy/horror and computer games had remained the minority tastes of a few cult fans
Popular culture endures because it is a continuous stream, cult followings die off from lack of interest and eventually get dusty on the shelves of fans -in other words, if TES hadn't got more accessible , Oblivion or Skyrim, or the next one, would have been the last in the series
