Hmm... speaking of reading books... is anyone here writing a book? I'm trying to (read: failing miserably at) writing one...

Yes, my sister and her friends are obsessed with those books. I don't like them, they sound like cheap fanfiction to me, but hey! that's my opinion

Sound like or read like? You can't judge the book if you haven't read it.

Actually, contrary to popular belief, you CAN judge a book by its cover. I've done it quite a few times. :P

I think I might need to start broadening my horizons... I'm running out of new books to read. I've just been re-reading my favorites for the past week. :(

I have just finished George R. R. Martin's 'A Feast for Crows', the fourth book in his 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series. They are superb.
I have also just recently finished Dean Koontz' 'Velocity', 'From the Corner of His Eye(s)', 'The Good Guy' and 'Sole Survivor' (All on audiobook, and all fantastic novels that I strongly recommend).

I have now started on Stephen King's Blaze (It was written under a pseudonym that I can't seem to remember).
I missed it here.

The Golden Compass is a nice read :D

And I read all of the Cirque du Freak ones I read a book a day they were so interesting. The Library at my school just ordered the Demonata series so it will be there by the start of the school year :D

The whole "His Dark Materials" is a good read. :P I like The Subtle Knife most though. Just because all the key moments have an extremely important feel. And then there are the parts that don't seem like key points... yet. :)

As for Judging a Book by its cover, I suppose if you looked at the back cover... but I still don't, I tend to read the back cover and about 2 pages from the first chapter if I feel like I'll buy the book. But that gets me in trouble a lot of the time. :?

I've started them before, but never did get around to ever finishing one...I'm probably more disposed to writing short stories, more than a 400+ page novel...

I don't know how some of my favorite authors crank out the novels they do, but then again, they probably don't know how I can draw either...

I'm reading Stephen King's 'Duma Key', it's not bad so far, not as good as his earlier work but still much better then 'Cell'.

Richard Bachman (could be spelled wrong) was the pseudonym King used for a few books, ironically one of the Bachman books, 'The Running Man', is one of King's best.

Actually yes, I'm about 70 pages through so far, looks like it'll be about 250-300 pages in the end.
A bit of advice for you, if you believe in the story stick with it through thick and thin, writing it may well eat your life but it's worth it in the end.

I've got a lot of stories bouncing in my head, one of which is a "dark fantasy" novel because that description sounds cool. I'm also working on several short stories, novellas, etc. I'm currently working on a short story that a few people around the forum might already know about.

That's the kind of stuff I write, a friend recently asked me what I was writing about and I responded "It's a story about vampires," her reaction was "Oh, I thought it would be something horrible like that."

I just finished reading Terry Pratchett's "Making Money".

Very strange book, and a whole lot better than the last Discworld book I read, Wintersmith, but that was for kiddies. :P

You should read Hogfather and Reaper Man.

Rincewind and Death are my two favorite Discworld characters.

Last night, I bribed someone with a car to take me to the bookstore so I could get a roleplaying manual--Scion:God, from White Wolf Publishing. Two quarts of ice cream, and I've got all the reading material I need for a while.

Also on the docket for me to re-read are some of the Babysitter's Club books, since I'm in a place that has, like, almost all of them and they bring back my childhood...Sad, no?

Moist Von Lipwig has gotta be my favourite Discworld character... although I recently finished Going Postal (yeah, I know, I read them in the wrong order :() and I like it a lot more than Making Money, though they're both great.

I'd have to pick Albert Spangler.

I'm gonna reread The Chronicles of Narnia, so if I occasionally type like I'm living in the 20's don't mind me.

Seems to me like everyone is reading the "Twilight" series... there were four people reading it during our 15-people art class. Almost 1/3....

They praise the author as a genius. I say that fanfiction.net has most of the same fluff, if not even story.

And to finish my rambling... I've never even heard of the series before today.

BLASPHEMY!!!!

Honestly I don't think the author is a genius... I think she's a serious mental case. She knows how to [&@%!] off some of her readers real nice-like. That said, the Twilight series is still amazing to me. (And if you'd have paid closer attention to this thread you would've heard of it sooner, )

Fanfics, blah. I read a lot of them at one point (years ago), and my sister read a lot too, for longer than I did. She doesn't like them anymore either. :? The fluff is all there, I agree, but not the story structure. Any story similarities are mostly the fanfic author trying to create epic situations for the main characters to get out of or overcome. (At least from back when I read them... who knows, maybe their writing skills have improved over the years)

Anyway... I haven't had a chance to read my shiny new copy of Breaking Dawn yet. But I swear... there are certain things that if Stephenie does, she'll get a loooooooooot of hate mail for. Lmao, and her movie would probably flop too.

...and diplomacy continues to fail. Their ears fall deaf, and their eyes fall blind, yet they are still not mute. They will not know their errors. Only what they believe themselves. But we... we shall not be silenced.

Ya the movie will probably suck. I can't believe that author is actually making the same book, just from a different character's perspective. It is outrageous.

Sorry for the off-topicness.
