Janie carefully drove around the Aston Martin, sneaking a glance at it's driver. A wave of deja vu hit her like a slap to the face. Wait, who was that? She wondered, continuing past.
Over the next ten minutes, Monica continued fighting with the police officer about many random (and generally useless) things. It was eventually agreed that Monica would receive a ticket. The police officer actually let a smile slip across his face as he got back into his car. "Ugh..." Monica mumbled. "I hate cops."
Janie arrived at her house, and parked outside of the laundromat. A little, wrinkled asian man was washing the windows. She grinned. "Hey, Mr. Takahashi." She said, bowing. The man turned, and smiled. "You bow terribly, Miss McFair." He said with a first-generation Japanese accent. "I'll keep practicing." Janie responded, smiling amiably. Say Hi to Asami for me." The Takahashis were the owners of the Laundromat, as well as her landlords. She opened the door with her key, and half-ran up the stairs. She returned to her apartment, and tossed her jacket in a ball into a corner, and set her book onto a sizeable stack of novels on a coffee table. She started some water boiling for tea, and flicked on the little TV. She wheeled the computer chair over, and switched the channel to the local news. For a few minutes, there were the standard stories, traffic, weather, a stabbing on Beaver street. Then the Business section came on. "The St Elise Hotel Company, owners of the largest Hotel chain in America, have resolved a meeting with a UK based hotel corporation right here in Ballarwood. Whether this will lead to the speculated merger remains to be seen...." Janie smiled. I'm sure Monica is doing a hell of a lot better than I am right now... She thought wistfully.
After a long ride (which seemed to last for days), Monica finally arrived at the Black Swan. She pulled her sports car into the private parking lot where she had reserved a spot near the doors. She exited the vehicle and locked the doors with the press of a button. Afterwards, she fast-walked into the hotel lobby. The lobby was gigantic and represented the greatest of this small city's hotels. Large paintings, beautiful statues, and even a large Roman-style fountain in front of the main desk.
"Excuse me," Monica said to one of the clerks, placing her purse on the high desk. "My name is Monica St Elise. I'm staying on the top floor. Do you have a phone book I can use?"
The clerk smiled and nodded, placing a large book on the desk. "There you are, miss."
It took almosst 20 minutes for Monica to find Janie's number. Finally, she came across the small set of digits. She pulled out her cell phone (which she had purchased for the trip) and dialed the number.
Gina turned around, and began walking at the children, who scattered in different directions. Pleased with herself, she put her bicycle away, and began walking back down the street, feeling much more elated than she had just moments ago.
Because there's no fun to be found in being normal.
Monica smiled. Someone had answered. But she wasn't sure if it was Janie or not. It was hard to tell. She picked up her purse and moved away from the main desk, trying to find somewhere quieter to talk on the phone. "Hello," she replied. "Is this Jane McPhial?"
"What? I do? God, I hate that. Not like the mashed-potatoes version of English the locals speak, I hope. My Japanese landlords speak better English!" She was pacing the apartment giddily. "Oh, god, how are you?"
"I'm in Ballarwood for a business meeting!" Monica replied excitedly. "I was only supposed to stay for three days. But I remembered you lived here, so I extended the trip to two weeks!"
"I've got a suite at the Black Swan. God, it took me forever to track you down! I even got a speeding ticket on the way back here from your workplace!"
Monica giggled. "Oops..." she replied. "I just got out of that damn business meeting about an hour ago. I'm still all dressed up. Want to meet up tonight?"
