Re: Your favorite genre of music?
I can sit here all day and present you examples of why Metal is easilly the most varied and intelligent genre in music. I mean I can kinda like rap, when it isn't gangsta (shockingly) but I've not heard rap present anything as conceptually complex as Avantasia's Wicked Trilogy, Kamelot's adaptation of Faustus over two albums, Ayreon (yeah, just Ayreon because the whole thing is a multi-album high concept sci fi story), and so on.Sonixboom wrote:why does everyone on here like metal...
id rather listen to someone rap about hard times than listen to and try to understand a skinny sweaty guy gargling marbles while he dances around and yells about death and sadness.
just saying, street knowledge all the way
-Sonix
I never take anyone who says they hate all metal seriously. They just have no idea what comes under the umbrella because it is incredibly broad. I actually challenge anyone here to listen to Ayreon's Dragon on the Sea, and whether they like or dislike it, I would imagine it would still surprise them that it comes under the category of metal.

Intriguing. What characterisitcs of this song make it "metal"? The generic harmonized solo towards the end is the only give away. I'd call the whole thing "other".hybridial wrote:I actually challenge anyone here to listen to Ayreon's Dragon on the Sea, and whether they like or dislike it, I would imagine it would still surprise them that it comes under the category of metal.
Better add Hard Rock to the list because of Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave. And "indie" because Windows Media player insists that White Stripes and MGMT are.

Re: Your favorite genre of music?
Okay, I guess I got lost in the semantics of categorisation. I'd say what I really mean is, Ayreon are considered to be largely progressive metal, and Dragon on the Sea is one example of the broad range that can encapsulate.Lindai wrote:Intriguing. However, I still feel that when people say metal in a derogatory way, they're only thinking of one particular manner of it, (and it's either usually thrash which seems to be the most common, or they think of the more extreme kinds like Death metal, and some bands in that area are kinda ridiculous in how they interpret that style). But Conception and Ark sound nothing like Metallica or Slayer, just as Therion and Symphony X sound nothing like Cradle of Filth.
Of course, just could be some people don't like any oomph in their music at all

Re: Your favorite genre of music?
rock in the 60's is called pop now, or blues
country now is nothing like it was in the 80's metal in the 80's is now rock and sometimes not even hard
Music chances all the time, and in 20 years what we know now wont matter
I play a lot of metal's that you would not call metal
Demon hunter is metal but some say its not
the problem is no one sets a defnition of what each genre is
you can list one and you would be wrong to someone, there is not one set defnition
I could call Ac\Dc metal and someone would agree you might say they are wrong but its all ophion
Some pepole say if it dont scream its not metal, or if it dont play 260 bppm its not metal
evrey one is guilty of it even a small bit

Re: Your favorite genre of music?
Yeah, god I gave up on trying to distinguish between rock and metal sometimes because even most sources will contradict themselves at one point on whether an act is hard rock or metal.
I guess the point I'm just trying to make is, when people say metal, I don't believe they know what they're talking about. Because I sure as hell don't know what I'm talking about

Re: Your favorite genre of music?
I like anything really...except commercial type pop, techno, heavy rock and metal.
I despise most pop due to the fact that it is all the bloody same, there is barely any difference between artists and half the blighters use software to make themselves sound like they can sing...in a genre where the singing is a main part, this just seems like cheating. Artists are suppose to have talent, these guys and gals might aswell stick to karaoke night at the local pub because that is about the level they are at. This is not to say ALL pop is crap.
Techno is just cheesy electronic music... how people dance to that stuff I will never know.
Metal and heavy rock is just to much for me. I'm not saying it's crap, I'm just not to keen on people playing guitars at crazy speeds and shouting/screaming vocals all the time(okay, not all the time, but a lot of it has aggressive vocals). I really have no love for it, and I have yet to hear any good tunes from people that love these genres, and yes I have heard the whole 'there are lots of variations' thing before and have still not really been impressed by any of the different kinds. I would say it is most likely due to the fact that there is always something within the music that is there no matter what variation of heavy rock/metal it is. I'm still open to persuasion of course, no point being like those scene kid/hipsters who only like/dislike something because it's 'hip' to... had enough of those people when I was like 15, bunch of sheeple.
Also, just to clarify, depressing doesn't bother me, after all I listen to The Smiths and The Cure, and a fair few of there tunes are grim as hell.
EDIT: oh! and I must say I love folk music... causes a lot of emotion, and there are various moods of it.

Is the in-game music in Morrowind classical or something? Cause I like listening to that kind of music.

Re: Your favorite genre of music?
Yeah, classical is probably the best word to describe it. I also enjoy listening to that sort of music sometimes, but not the sort of thing I play on my ipod when I'm out and about, or when I hook it up to someones car(not many people like it that much unfortunately). Good to listen to when your chilling out at home though.addictedtomorrowind wrote:Is the in-game music in Morrowind classical or something? Cause I like listening to that kind of music.

Re: Your favorite genre of music?
So, after trying to categorize my music by its actual genre rather than just "soundtrack", I've found that all of my music is either nu-metal, grunge, or some kind of techno, with the odd bit of classical and power metal thrown in.

I don't think listening to Daft Punk and a little bit of Aphex Twin qualifies you as a hardcore Electro fan.

Re: Your favorite genre of music?
I don't have a genre; I will listen to everything, and I really like discovering new music. The only exception are songs that have lyrics I do not entirely feel the need to endorse. I don't want to hear about your woman beating, for example. But that's a personal decision.

I love Tool so humping much that I'm going to throw down Prog Rock for shiggles even though I'm not certain of what Prog Rock actually entails. Definitely something to do with being musically supreme.
