Like...rather than the big staffs from oblivion, a thin pole with perhaps a small ball of magical energy on the end, which allows you to "aim down the sights" (how you hold the staff) and fire bolts of magical energy?
Idk.
As long as it looks ridiculously like a rifle. :D
Have you played Fable by any chance? If you have you would understand my desperate need to keep it going in the Fable direction. There is no scientific advancment in Nirn, the only technologically advanced society simply disappeared. No seriously the dwemer are simply gone. My point is no guns, no advancements, all technology that will be researched already has been. I would simply hate it if it moved forward. More importantly why does it need to advance, it isn't the real world, I don't want to deal with real world problems that come with technology like urban blight, plagues, high poverty rates. Once again;

NO GUNS NO GUNS NO GUNS
YES GUNS YES GUNS YES GUNS.

What, my all caps haven't convinced you? Ok then, let me try reasoning.

It needs to advance because that's how it happens. Of course, this world being magical, I understand that this can play a factor in...differing stuff, but not THAT different. Yeah, the dewmer left. So somebody ELSE can be the most technologically advance race in their stead. I have played Fable, but I don't see why guns have to be a "Fable" thing. I love muskets, and any game that puts them in, will have my undying hobo love. Guns in Elder Scrolls, please. And yes to urban blight, plague and high poverty rates, too.

All I got from that is that you liked Fable... (Leaves the conversation in the most dignified manner he can, by screaming in a panicked tone "He is a Fable fan, a Fable fan! Run for your lives! There is no hope left!")

In all seriousness Bethesda has pretty much already said they hated the direction Fable went (or as I refer to it as "The Nobles fart in people faces because the monkeys at Lionhead studios think that is funny"), and they will likely do everything they can to avoid it. So I'm not just saying no guns, if there was going to be guns they would of probably mentioned it by now.

Yeah I mean it's not like the world is like:

Dwemer: Smarticles
Everyone Else: Primitive Fools

200 Years? They would clearly advance:/ Maybe not GUNS or Muskets so to say, but some kind of Technological Advancements WILL have occured, it's rather ignorant and lazy of the designers NOT to have put any in. The TES world wont be advance by MUCH, but it wont be at the same level of oblivion.
Maybe they'll start using Wagons and Carts as well. Not western style, old, tacky carts pulled by some kind of fantasy creature.

And maybe the people will have evolved and are now able to FIGHT ON HORSES :O

No technological advances would make this game a dissapointment:/

But that's exactly the reason I want guns in Elder Scrolls, because as entertaining as Fable was, they just didn't take it seriously enough, whereas Bethesda would implement them correctly. I liked Fable because of the muskets and the mask options, not because of the game itself.

And I'm not just talking about Skyrim, I'm talking about the Elder Scroll series as a whole. Eventually, EVENTUALLY we need to see muskets. We just need to.

Also, good point, NordFtw.

NO GUNS! TES cannot have guns we have fallout for that, I know its an evolving world etc but it did take one hell of a long time to make gun powder, I hope Bethesda just go on without guns, or if they think the time for guns has come they can make A Lord of the rings RPG...now that would be heaven......"drools"

Millenia of battle, witches and wizards, murderers, theives, knights, mercenaries, an old woman at the bottom of a mountain,,,,,and a REALLY fast cat. TES is everthing (except rping a merc.) that FO/FABLE is not. If it's not broke don't fix it, the TES formula has worked thus far, I say lets keep it that way.

just my thoughts NO GUNPOWDER PERIOD.
Nooo, eventually you need gunpowder if this word is going to keep progressing in time. It isn't a static fantasy era, its moving forward. Things are evolving, and progressing. Eventually, somebody is going to invent gunpowder, make muskets, and scientific progress is going to lead to automobiles, electric light, and Mages becoming more and more archaic as time goes on. OR, maybe they're the ones that invent all this, powering it with magic.

So, like I said, I'll be bummed if the ES series never ever EVER develops guns. It just won't ring true to me.
Who says the necessary materials to make gunpowder even exist in the ES universe?

Beyond that, the argument that progression of time in another universe = the same outcomes as in our universe is not even logical let alone provable. Even if gunpowder could be created in the ES universe, there is nothing to suggest that they would necessarily develop that technology simply because time continues to pass.
If I knew ahead of time where and when I would need to physically defend myself or others, I would simply avoid that time and place...but I don't...hence CPL...

Guns would ruin everything. Although they're evolving in time and guns eventually would be invented they don't have to because the game is not based on real world history for god's sake! Bethesda has it in their power to make a game set in the 7th Era and still not include guns, because it's a fantasy universe! Tamriel is not real!

sulfur, charcoal, and potassium nitrate?

technically speaking dwemer should have had the ability to make black powder (assuming nirn & earth technology developing in the same kinds of ways/directions), considering they had steam power which is a much newer technology. tho its possible that it could have been bypassed because of magic.

Nothing would ruin the game. If you've been to Stormhold and back, it doesn't actually matter what the game is like as long as it has an "Elder Scrolls" stamp on it.

Edit: Also, to all the people talking about technological advancement on Nirn... what are you smoking? The series is in a fantasy world. Getting rid of knights and wizards will defeat the genre it was created for. Go back to Fallout if you want guns.

guns. They just dont belong in TES.

and to all of the people that dont believe that a horribly weakened morrowind couldnt have been taken over by a formally broken nation that united to strike down its former Oppressors, my question is why not?

I watched the gameplay trailer again and realised that there should be NO GUNS AT ALL. Also Mattbots post made me realise that yes, the game is more like Beowulf than Fable and that Skyrim is probably behind cyrodiil tech wise.

A lot of stuff has already been said, like guns and a short and/or boring main quest, but I'm going to have to add (if it wasn't already said) companions. Personally, I hated quests that forced you to work with other people because they always seemed to get right in front of your swinging sword. I do like the idea of being able to willingly ask people to help, I just hated when it was forced upon. Although it did bring a lot more of a challenge, like protecting Martin in front of the Great Gate, and it does add more of a deeper story to which ever quest you are doing.
I hope they can make the AI smarter that will stay back when you are in a fight, or they'll use long range weapons or spells.

Haven't you heard about the magnetic swords they have in Tamriel now? You can't hit companions with them cuz they don't have bits of metal inside them like enemies.

Making the game like Beowulf would kill me. It should be barbarian yes, but more like the Dark Ages.

All these Skyrim holdes are developing on their own around the crumbling ruins of the Septim Empire. Similiar to the what the Goths, Vandals, Franks and Lombards did to the Roman Empire, with a good remnant remaining similiar to the Byzantines.

Also, making the game like Conan or Beowulf would go against the Lore of Elder Scrolls. The Elder Scrolls were always leaned closer the Lord of the Rings and the real world High Middle Ages.

Guns? Uh..... maybe.... maybe not....

Black Powder? Sure. Most fantasies have it in some form or another. And it could go along with how the Lore is set. The series' weapons, armor and wars are all set to resemble those of the High Middle Ages, which had bombards, cannons etc.

Uhh, "always" as in just Oblivion? Todd Howard said that there was an influence in Oblivion, yes, but the previous games did not seem to contain any Lord of the Rings inspiration. If anything, they should avoid the Lord of the Rings style, embrace another one (barbarian, viking would do just fine) to preserve the game's uniqueness within the series.

That is not what I meant. They didn't really take any "inspiration" from the Lord of the Rings. It just had more similarities to the Lord of the Rings than Beowulf or Conan in the general setting of the fantasy.

Well to be fair it's more a Beowulf, Conan world, so it would be vikings I guess. So that probably means they'd be behind, just an assumption.
