Alright, I must admit I was much too harsh...I now realize the view I had on rap was a bit, narrow minded. Err...I'm sure some rap is 'appropriate' and 'sane' but, reiderating my statement beofre, I ahave yet to hear it.

That's cool, Lunar, I'm not - nor should anyone - be asking you to even like hip-hop/rap/gangsta/Westcoast/Eastcoast/hyphy etc.. everyone has their own taste. But there are an awful lot of people in the world who love - and live and breathe - hip-hop, just as there are those who love metal or whatever. You don't have to like it - but you don't have to 'diss' it, either.

(i'll try and find a couple of more melodic/thoughtful examples of hippedy-hop sometime, and send them your way via the magic of YouTube links. )

Boy, you love calling people out Tourist. I can't say that I like that, but everyone is entitled to his/her opinion and (atleast in 3 countries) has the right to express it in most ways that they want to so.... Congratulations! I really don't know what to say to that, but way to express your opinions firmly and not violently (now if we could just get the cultists to do the same thing, hmm...).

Some hip-hop i like, but I was targetting rap specifically, I understand how grouping massive amounts of music together will drive people insane.
But I also dislike Heavy/Acid Metal

Yeah in general nowadays rap is all "Gat poppin'" and "pimpin'" and "smacking hoes up". After hearing about 5 million rappers all saying the same bloody thing about 5 times (at least) in the same song, I just said goodbye to it. Then I discovered rock :Twisted Evil:

I might be a bit controversial here. I hate pretty much every lead guitar-focused song.

Lead guitar is the most obnoxious thing ever in music, possibly moreso than the identikit gangsta rappers being rightfully slated in this thread. Yes, I'm a guitarist but no, this isn't jealousy because I'm a crap lead player (I am, but that's besides the point). Lead guitar ruined the blues, it ruined rock 'n' roll and worryingly it's been in metal since its very beginning. Pretty much all the music I listen to is guitar-based but I really can't stand it when guitarists go off on ponderous 5-minute explorations of the minor pentatonic scale. Eruption is the biggest act of musical onanism ever committed to tape. And don't get me started on Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Angelo Batio and that lot.

I do like a few lead guitarists though. Jonny Greenwood and Ed O'Brien of popular Oxford beat combo Thom Yorke & The Radioheads don't play the guitar as much as coax completely alien sounds from it, ditto Kevin Shields. Jack White just completely ignores all conventions of what blues-rock guitar should be, and just turns up to 11 and goes a bit mental. Johnny Marr, although billed as a 'lead' guitarist, is actually the finest and most melodic rhythm player to have ever existed, and I've basically adopted his style and drenched it in effects to create my own. David Gilmour, finally, understands subtlety, something which most other lead guitarists aren't even aware exists. Listen to the start of Shine On You Crazy Diamond - when has a guitarist ever said so much with just four notes? And the tone of his solo on Comfortably Numb is exactly what lead guitar should sound like.

Haha where i live you cant avoid rap. A lot of my friends listen to it unfortunatly. I dont hate it though. I have to agree with tourist on this one. I actually like some rap. Just not "rollin on 22s in the caddy for shizzy" kinda rap. Immoral Technique is pretty good.

Back in high school when i played football naturally half the team was black so all it was on bus rides was constant rap with them singing to it, dancing to it, throwing up gang signs, etc etc.

You say that almost as if they* are the same there!
Do you mean Irish Traditional music?
Believe it or not (and this may seem a little ironic, as I am Irish) I actually listen to Irish trad an awful lot actually. Now the reason that might sound strange is cos all my friends dont really listen to Irish trad. Its kinda not all that heard of in these parts anyhow.
But another pet hate of mine is the techno dance songs :x they are stupid!!! Just one beat going through the whole song sometimes with no lyrics even! Now I know that lyrics do not always have to be in a song but still! Even worse if they do have lyrics they are completely [&@%!]! Unfortunatley I dont have an example at my disposal right now {meaning that I cant find anything on You Tube  }.

Come on now, as a musician you should know that music is opinionated and there is no right or wrong type of music.

I generally have the completely opposite taste from you in music, and i cant stand the way you express your opinion but i salute the fact that you recognize good music dosnt have to cram as many notes in as fast as possible. Or that technicality dosnt mean the song is gonna be good just because its hard to play. Most of my peers think the complete opposite.

Rap. All of it. Except some by KJ-52. Some of his hit close to home [plus, he doesn't use profanity, or the like].

Anything rap, except for Usher, he has a light kind of rap. Country, except for Carrie Underwood, who I like. Jazz, techno and metal, there are a few metal bands that I like though, ex: Disturbed, Slipnot( sp.) and some three days grace. I hate Avenged Sevenfold. Another think, I hate Canadian music, i.e. Radiohead, yes tourist, I'm prepared for the rant and of course, your famous calls of yank and deaf" insert animal here".

Thank you. That is one of the reasons I love classical music and any music with subtleties that make the most of the most of the song. I love bringing tiny intricate little pieces, especially if they are comprised by just a small spectrum of the scale, the less notes, the better. Danny Elfman is a master of weaving a bunch of random and subtle sounds together to make an excellent piece of music. One of his best happens to be (not surprisingly) the theme from the Tim Burton movie Beetleguise

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFAfiLA97mM&NR=1

When you're listening to this, listen for all of the tiny little effects sounds that he puts in just to make it that much interesting

Well, you did change your name huh, ex Heldor, and you didn't have to start over, I told you patience is a virtue. Anyway, the song you posted was mildly interesting at best, I find no true delight in it. There isn't enough..... words.

LOL words... If words in lyric-less songs were defined in the dictionary, there would be a recommendation of that theme. Truly the abstract "word" is presented excellently in that piece.

It seems like a lot of piano and weird quirky noises, I know that it's a soundtrack but I guess I just don't like soundtracks. They are kinda of.... dull. This one was good but not great.

Here's the skinny: respect other forms of music. Or else...

I could drop verbal hellfire on Anonymous Guitar Band #586, and laser-designate tactical nukes onto the myriad bunkers of Metal. But you know what? I don't. Different strokes for different folks/horses for courses etc. When I was younger - and stoopider (yes folks, I WAS even stoopider once upon a time.. ) - I ripped into other forms of music I didn't like, because of that ravenous desire for self-identity/actualisation that teenagers and people in their early 20's seek. It makes sense, it really does. But sooner or later, horizons broaden, and the whole 'mine's better than yours' schtick wears thin. Well, that's what's supposed to happen, anyway...

I gain nothing in attempting to paint Metal in a bad light. It ain't my thing, because I have lots of 'my' things to keep me entertained. Without wishing to sound like too much of a liberal-optimist; we're lucky to find ourselves living on a small lump of rock floating through space, which caters for so much diversity. We have variety, and individuality. It all rocks.

Hip-hop/rap/whatever has its place.
As does metal.
As does--- well, you get the picture.

leroy; I'm also of the school of 'less is more', when it comes to music, not just guitar playing. Neil Young was never the greatest, or most technically proficient guitar player, but he played with heart (Danger Bird on the Zuma album is a great example of his playing).

Back On-Topic..
I won't post a link to it, because I wouldn't wish it on my worst of enemies, but there's an Akon(?) track that refused to leave the UK charts a few years back. When people started using it as ringtones, I swear I got close to smashing up complete strangers mobiles just to shut it up... *shudder* "The horror!!! The... horror...."
