If you didn't steal the egg, then you can see its parents when you look at the egg. The dragon that hatches from the egg will be the same species as one of the two parents, and it shouldn't be too hard to tell by the color of the egg.

Hmm, it seems I can only have 4 eggs. The help function doesn't say anything on this.

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure how many I can have now, but it seemed as though once my eggs hatched, I was able to get more eggs.
And that's a bad thing.
