Re: Post Your Character!
My new character is an Altmer who is arrogant and condescending (not intentionally Altmer) who is a warrior and doesn't like his own race's religion and culture. He thinks his being stranded on the destitute province of Morrowind is the worst (or best) thing that ever happened to him, and he plans to first get what he needs, train his skills, then become a bandit and, well, do bandit stuff.
Name: Manaril
Race: Altmer
Birthsign: The Warrior
Specialization: Combat
Favored Attributes: Strength, Endurance
Major: Long Blade, Blunt, Heavy Armor, Armorer, Hand-to-hand
Minor: Spear, Axe, Marksman, Medium Armor, Restoration
It'll be an interesting character to play, especially since he has four-five weapon skills and he's an Altmer.

Re: Post Your Character!
Here's my latest venture:
Name: Velyn Uvirith
Race: Dunmer
Class: "Sorceror"
Birthsign: The Apprentice
Factions: House Telvanni, Morag Tong
Major Skills: Marksman, Unarmored, Conjuration, Alteration, Illusion
Minor Skills: Destruction, Restoration, Mysticism, Enchant, Short Blade
Velyn is scheming, selfish, and egotistical - in other words, your typical Dunmer. Though he has no interest in the politics of the guilds and factions of Vvardenfell, he has allied himself with Great House Telvanni in the interest of "stealing" their arcane secrets. His megalomania is such that he has been known to engage in battle without aid of armor or shield, believing himself to be immune to what he calls "weaknesses of the flesh". Nonetheless, he prefers to take a less direct approach whenever possible, intently studying the behavior patterns of his victims before making a move. His favorite method is summoning daedra to distract his opponent, weakening them with magical poisons, and finishing them off from afar with a bound longbow.
He has a great distrust of silt striders, considering them to be "unnatural", and prefers walking from place to place. The only way he feels comfortable leaving the ground at all is through the implementation of magicks or other methods of his own devising.
I originally made this character with a more survivalist/exploration-focused build in mind. Though he's essentially a "pure mage" for all intents and purposes, he's turned out the be the most fun character I've made in a long time. So far he's done extremely well on 100 difficulty, considering that he's still in the early levels and he isn't a combat-intensive character by any stretch of the imagination).
I've also been roleplaying him to require basic necessities (eating, sleeping at night, etc.) and it's been a blast. Just the other morning when he woke up, he put a loaf of bread and a kwama egg on the ground, cast a fireball on it, and voila - breakfast.
I haven't got a really good "vanity shot" of him yet (for the sake of this thread), but I've been chronicling his travels through screenshots, and I'm thinking of putting them online (on a photobucket account or some such) to form a sort of "photo journal" of his adventures.

Ranged characters will nearly always have the advantage over their close combat brethren in 100% difficulty, the reason? they don't get hit. It's just a barrage of spells, arrows and summons.skooma steve wrote:I originally made this character with a more survivalist/exploration-focused build in mind. The main problem is small interior spaces like huts, but if you know decent conjuration spells then you would do fine even then.
Later on of course, warriors do become equal just because of the huge AR they can get from Ebony or Glass armours.
Anyway, always been a fan of walking/jumping/levitating everywhere so that's cool you are exploring that way.
Also, hope you do put the picture journal thing up. Sounds interesting.

Re: Post Your Character!
So I restarted my aforementioned character. Such is the nature of morrowind.
His skills are now as follows:
Major: Enchant, Conjuration, Alteration, Mysticism, Illusion
Minor: Destruction, Restoration, Athletics, Short Blade, Light Armor
It's more or less the same build, except I scrapped marksman (since it's kind of pointless to have both marksman and destruction). I also swapped unarmored in favor of light armor (Unarmored was just too much of a handicap, and I miss wearing cool armor). It fits his character better, as Telvanni love shiny enchanted things. And now he can wear a Cephalpod helm, which is very....Telvanni-esque.
I'm also going to have him join the Mage's Guild as a "Telvanni Spy" with the purpose of infiltrating their ranks and ultimately killing Trebonius. This way I will get the whole shebang as far as mage-oriented questlines go.
Anyways, I'm still going to do the photo journal, it just may be awhile now.

Re: Post Your Character!
Yeah I agree with the pointlessness of having Marksman and Destruction in the same build.
I do love Spellbow characters though, which pretty much means using a bow for damage and the rest of the magic skills for everything else.

My version of the "spellbow" is almost identical to the preset nightblade class, switching short blade for marksman as the primary means of attack. Sniping while levitating is particularly enjoyable.
It's just that I was shooting for more of a pure mage playstyle this time around. Then again, bows are just plain awesome.

I suffer from chronic morrowind indecision. I've probably started literally hundreds of characters over the past ten years. Sadly, the majority of them don't last very long.

Re: Post Your Character!
You are not alone on that one. I think RPG's in general tend to make me want to restart every five seconds, mainly due to the fact you get so many bloody options in these games. It's even worse these days were you no longer only choose the three basic classes: Wizard, Rogue, and Warrior... and instead can make a huge combination of whatever skills you want.

Hmm, I'm thinking of replacing that with Athletics as a minor skill..But then what's a good 5th major skill for a ""warrianger"?skooma steve wrote:^^

Athletics would be a good choice. Especially since "warriangers" probably spend a good deal of time roaming the countryside.

Re: Post Your Character!
Name: Moncar Belvani
Male Dunmer
Birthsign: The Warrior
Birth place: Bravil
Class: Barbarian
Favoured attributes: Strength, Speed
Major skills: Axe, Medium Armor,Blunt Weapon, Athletics, Block
Minor skills: Acrobatics, Light Armor, Armorer, Marksman, Unarmored
My character was born in Bravil to Dunmer immigrants, who travelled to Cyrodiil in order to make their fortune. As his surname suggests, his family were very minor nobles from the House Redoran.
After the mine he worked in (Flooded mine) was attacked by bandits, who slew his parents, he left the town and lived in the wild and became a Barbarian. His years of battling beasts and bandits came to an end when he was falsely accused of attacking an Imperial patrol, and he was imprisoned in the Imperial City. Only a handful of months passed and he was released to Morrowind.
When he got to Morrowind, he desperately wanted to be accepted by his own people and was prepared to go to any lengths to be loved by them. This need to be accepted had turned him into a xenophobic, racist, religious fanatic! These views made him fit in perfectly with the House Redoran, and he very quickly advanced through their ranks due to his unwavering loyalty and martial prowess. After many months of hard work he eventually became Archmaster after a bloody duel with Bolvyn Venim. (As a side note: Moncar doesn't necessarily hate other races per se, but he strongly believes that the Dunmer are superior and, because of this, he tries to only associate with his own kind (he prefers to buy from Dunmer merchants, only really asks Dunmer for quest info etc).
He is also a devout follower of the Tribunal temple, he prays regularly at shrines and is a Diviner. He only helps the dissident priests because he feels he has to (a sort of necessary pact with evil). He rejects the dissident account of events on Red Mountain, and would be perfectly happy to be persecute them after he has defeated Dagoth Ur (even if Vivec wishes otherwise!).
(I could go on, but I'm tired haha.)

I'm diggin' the backstory. Redoran and Temple complement each other well.
Let me guess...has this character has already undergone an Oblivion playthrough? It can be interesting to try and carry a particular character through multiple games.

@skooma steve: Thanks
, I've spent a bit of time thinking about it, trying to make sure it would make sense and would be in line with the lore.
But no, I played Oblivion first and didn't really enjoy it tbh. I've uninstalled it from Steam so haven't had a chance to play with Moncar in Cyrodiil yet. (Plus I've only just completed Morrowind haha)
I did make his ancestor, Sadryn Belvani, in Skyrim. But I find it really hard to roleplay in that game, I see it as more an action-adventure game than an RPG.

Re: Post Your Character!
I see, I was just assuming you had used the character before in Oblivion because of his history (born in Bravil, etc). Admittedly, I didn't care for Oblivion on my first playthrough either. But I've just started playing it again recently, and I've found that I like it a lot better if I make a conscious effort to avoid comparing it to Morrowind every two seconds.
As far as Skyrim goes, the Devs intentionally eliminated almost all the roleplaying elements of the previous games in favor of the more commercially viable FPS-style gameplay. But I won't even get into that.

Ah damn, that sucks. Please do get into it haha, I would like to know more! I think it's really sad what they've done to the Elder Scrolls series, the lore really is spectacular and it's sad they're letting it go to waste/ not developing it as well as they could. I know a lot of people often say Morrowind fans are just nostalgic, and that Skyrim and Oblivion are actually better games in reality, but I don't think that's true at all. Speaking as someone who started playing Morrowind when I was half way through Skyrim, I can honestly say that I prefer Morrowind a lot more. It's a lot deeper than the other games, the atmosphere is terrific and it took me what felt like an age to complete, Skyrim in comparison is aesthetically pleasing but not even remotely deep and the plot is really black and white (although the Stormcloak vs Imperial thing wasn't, which was good). It's disappointing that they have taken the rpg element out just for sales purposes, I really thought Bethesda were better than thatskooma steve wrote: As far as Skyrim goes, the Devs intentionally eliminated almost all the roleplaying elements of the previous games in favor of the more commercially viable FPS-style gameplay. Moncar, join us in THIS topic, we're having a nice discussion on the relative merits of different TES games (and whether Morrowind's fans are really a bunch of elitists or it's actually the best game in the series).

It's kind of hard for me to say this, but I honestly don't blame bethesda for making the developmental choices they've made. That's not to say I agree with them.
People forget too often that they are a company like any other in a capitalist world. This means their ultimate goal is making as much money as possible. And this means they will have to follow the market trends of their particular industry in order to sell their products.
If their ultimate goal was actually making the best game possible, then they would go nonprofit, devote their considerable assets to developing a hugely epic RPG to crown the Elder Scrolls series, communicate with/allow greater input from their fans, spend years researching and developing, and finally release it as freeware. But of course we all know that's never going to happen.
EDIT: Apologies for being shamelessly off-topic.

Re: Post Your Character!
@skoomasteve: I think there's a difference between making a game for profit and making a game for the maximum profit possible. I think Bethesda have done the latter. What annoys me is that the former is financially viable, Morrowind did make them a lot of cash. And I think if they'd made Skyrim in the same mould as Morrowind they would have made a fair profit (ofc it wouldn't be as much as they've made with their current version). It just seems sad to me that they've developed all this lore and yet they're consiously ruining Tamriel just because they want more money. I mean, you never saw Tolkein start writing spaceships and laser guns into middle earth because he thought it'd make more money, did you?
Yeah, we're getting off-topic here. I can't resist having an anti-Bethesda rant every so often haha.

Re: Post Your Character!
You have a fair point. It's true that Morrowind made them a fair deal of money. But it was still a game that catered to more of a "niche" market. It wasn't until the release of Oblivion that Bethesda really got the attention of the mainstream.
Also, although I like the thought behind your Tolkien analog, it's not really a fair comparison. He could never have come close to making the kind of money that any successful game studio makes. For him, his writing was a labor of love. It is for this reason he was able to produce something truly remarkable. Were his goal to get rich, he wouldn't have chosen to be a writer in the first place.
