Re: The 'What happened to you today' thread
My girlfriend just went back to pink hair after a half-year of blue!
I wanna dye my hair one day.
I have work today in an hour and a half. Guess how much sleep I got! :D

I've been working a lot of extra hours lately since we're in the busiest weeks of the year, but my work's being cool about it and we have been getting stuff like some free food and they also brought in a massage therapist this week for each person to get a 15-min massage, which was really nice.

I've been working a bunch too. Not only does my store operate with more managers and leads than actual associates, we actually have one associate on a two week notice, and another in the hospital, so I've been covering for people left and right. I am so, so tired and I just wanna play video games before school starts, dammit :/

On the downside, work is awful (check the ranting thread <3) and school just started.
On the upside, school just started, so I'm probably going to be on here a lot more often to procrastinate!

Re: The 'What happened to you today' thread
Cannea recall if i posted it or not and well, it's a Monday. Sheodovah is in a bit of a meeeeeeeeh mood. I had a mock telephone interview and I've said this before and i'll say it again. [&@%!]. The. Train. Fares. £16.80. That's almost an entire food budget for me. Fortunately, I got expenses(i also opted for the off peak one and almost was late because it turned out there was only one per hour. [&@%!].) for travel and won't be out of pocket. That was last tuesday. Tomorrow, I have the joy of getting up at 5am, getting to the train station by half 6 and undertake a mock interview with an employer. Yay. If it was a real interview, I would be a lot more happier but yeah, that is not a happy concept for me. 5am to get to another town by 9 because the trains are utter n'wahs and knowing my luck(along with me being paranoid about it.), I'll get the half 7 one, it is late and gives me little time to get to the place. Happened last week with a mere 8 minutes to spare. That was off peak. Still, at least I'll get some feedback and hopefully, find out if I'm as good as I believe I am.
Would be [&@%!] nice if I could start getting interviews again.
Oh and yeah, that's about it. Though, there is a medevial music thingy this friday that I am considering going to. Tis a free event.
Oh and turns out i was wrong about this being the month. As usual.
On a much more positive light, next week, i'm going on a small trip and tis cooking related!
Shall be interesting.

@Union: While I'm happy that you'll be around more often, I'm sad to think of this procrastination. I mean, it's bad enough procrastinating in high school. It must be even worse when you're at post-secondary. This also makes me realize that I don't actually know what you're studying. What are you going to school for?

The service i'm with that is attempting to help me to get a job(tis a mystery to why interviews are eluding me.) is doing a trip next thursday to a cooking thing. Think a celebrity cheif is there(she has been on I'm a celebrity, get me out of here) and there are a few things along with it being aimed at being useful to help people cook. I can't recall it all off the top of my head and my bag is just out of reach. Not that i'm being lazy and could just reach over to it or anything to get the flyer.

Re: The 'What happened to you today' thread
Oh, come on, it's not like I hate the place. I love UESP. The simple fact of the matter is that anything you do that isn't of immediate benefit to your responsibilities is, by textbook definition, procrastination.Cassandra wrote:@Union: While I'm happy that you'll be around more often, I'm sad to think of this procrastination. I'm in my fifth(!) year, final semester of my Music Business degree. Trust me when I say I'm a professional when it comes to procrastinating. Obviously it's not the best thing as far as work goes, but the truth is the matter is that I work better under pressuring time constraints. Not because the pressure makes me rush, but because I can rarely muster up the motivation to do something without urgency.
As for how bad it is... Honestly, not really? As long as you show you to your classes, do your homework and papers, you should be fine. Granted I'm a B student, not a perfect 4.0 guy, because I don't need that kind of stress in my life, but yeah.
By all means, do your best, but I can get by with a B and that's alright with me.

Re: The 'What happened to you today' thread
Oh, I wasn't implying that you hate it here. I spend an awful lot of time here procrastinating, myself, during the school year.
Music Business sounds cool! I don't know much about the music industry except through my dad, but it seems like a good way to get to work with what you love.
Do marks matter much in post-secondary? I know that high school marks matter because they determine what schools you can go to after, but does anyone really look at your grades after you graduate college/university?

Re: The 'What happened to you today' thread
I think it depends on your major. You can claim you have a degree and that's cool for most folks, but they can totally go into your records and be like "man, this dude only barely skirted by in school".
However, if someone has put in the four years to earn a degree, that generally means they're more qualified than your average applicant. Most degrees have standards for people who earn them so it's an effective strainer.
Try your best, obviously, but also don't compromise your emotional well being for grades.

Re: The 'What happened to you today' thread
An important work skill is making yourself look busy in your downtime so your boss doesn't make you start something new, and one way to do that is browsing UESP.
Your grades determine your GPA. Your GPA determines the quality of your degree. I mean I was a B/C student, I wasn't excellent but I good, I went to class, I did assignments, it was fine. Rule of thumb, if your GPA is over 3.0 you're doing very well.
I'd also point out that (hopefully) you're doing something you enjoy in college, whereas that's often not the case in secondary level education. I was bad at maths and hated it, so that was a real problem for me in secondary school. But with university, while it was much more work but I genuinely loved studying History, Geography and Philosophy so doing it didn't feel like so much of a chore. And it's less regurgitating information and more forming your own arguments, in Arts at least, which is far less dull. I mean I did have some bad modules or assignments which really sucked, and the work can pile up and get stressful, but for the most part my time in academia was positive. Although I'm not American, so I got to finish college without a massive debt demanding I justify my time there.

Re: The 'What happened to you today' thread
My state pays out substantial benefits for doing well in High School because we have one of the worst higher education statistics in the country, so I'm a lot luckier than most American students. I'll still be saddled with crippling loan debt, but at the very least it'll be more like a car note instead of a long term mortgage.

Re: The 'What happened to you today' thread
In some good work news, I got offered part-time at the fund I work for after I go back to my MSc. I actually got offered this earlier in the Summer but it was during hours I couldn't do so I don't think I even mentioned it. Now the hours are better. But that's not the best bit, it seems like I won't be made do any of the boring data audit tasks I currently do - I'll basically be just focusing on the interesting, high-value stuff that we do. Now, I haven't actually accepted yet - I need to get my full timetable yet - and I'm hoping that I should be able to wrangle some weeks unpaid leave around exams, but I'm really happy with how everything is at the moment.
We've also been working long-ish hours too, though. Usually 9 - 10 a day. I don't think that's as bad as Alarra seems to have it, but the day especially drags after most people have gone home. I can't complain though really: I know people working longer hours, shifts at worse times, and do this on top of hating their job. I have it pretty good.
Good grades though tend to be a precursor to getting a good internship, or a good lab placement, or research-assistantship, or clerkship, or whatever, which employers care a heap more about though, in my experience.
Obviously, then if you apply to graduate school, you'll be expected to have performed quite well.
Which is why, ultimately, people shouldn't be too worried about college at all: You'll have some rough nights where you work until 6am and then get the 6.30am bus into college to submit your Industrial Organisation end-of-term paper, but it'll be pretty densely sandwiched by periods which feel great.

It depends both on what degree you're doing and what you want to do with your degree. In the industry I have experience in - financial services - most of these places, and all the larger places, won't accept you straight out of college without a 3.0 or higher [2.1]. Lots of them specify that you don't apply without achieving that grade. But outside that none of them seem to care and are more than happy to accept a lower degree with a few years of experience at smaller places. I'm sure across business management, etc., it's probably quite the same.Cassandra wrote:Do marks matter much in post-secondary? This, too. I found doing well in college to be a lot easier than I did in secondary school just because I cared more about the subjects.Kerr wrote:But with university, while it was much more work but I genuinely loved studying History, Geography and Philosophy so doing it didn't feel like so much of a chore.

Just recently my dog Peanut, who's still a pup, ended up running off from the backyard, in the dark.. Oh what fun. Good news, I found her. After searching through the back woods with a light and all that, where do I find her? Back by the house trying to squeeze back through the fence =__=
She must of got spooked and headed back, all the while there's beta, in his boxers, a tank top, n shoes in the dead of night.. Walking through the brushes
