Duruza, that is completely correct. You have basically posted how I feel. Are you reading my mind?

Re: Sexuality revisited
Well, very, very few men are abused at home (excluding children), and even fewer are physically abused, and even fewer would want to go on a pride parade protesting against it. Whereas the figures for domestic abuse towards women are much, much higher, meaning it might just perchance be a bigger problem. Having a Straight pride parade is redundant because being straight isn't taboo, while a gay pride parade would raise awareness that homosexuals are actually normal human beans, and give them a chance to at least get rid of their guilty conscience on a part of them that they really shouldn't be ashamed of.
Re: Sexuality revisited
Why should they be ashamed of it. By all means be homosexual, just don't flaunt your beliefs at me. I'm perfectly accepting of gays.
Veck, I was talking about the top half and the last sentence.

Re: Sexuality revisited
Well, not everyone is accepting of gays. If people didn't stand up for their rights and try and force change, then the SOuthern USA might still be stuck in their own apartheid. It's a similar scene with the gay crowd.
Re: Sexuality revisited
I suppose, but I have a right to walk down the street and not get swallowed by a parade.

A parade is a parade, no matter what the subject. Would you complain if one was being held to celebrate a holiday?

Re: Sexuality revisited
Good to hear. Just for the reference, I can see what you're trying to say Duruza, but i just don't think it's necessary (I've compared it to that scene in The Life Of Brian before, where Stan wants the right to have babies despite it being a useless right to have).

Re: Sexuality revisited
Well, I can see why people would say that, it's a completely valid viewpoint. But then again, anti-same-sex marriage arguments could run along similar lines; that marriage is not a necessary right of homosexuals. That they receive the same rights as partners in civil unions and that marriage is not a prerequisite to love. Just a little food for thought.
Maybe violence against men is not a large problem in relation to violence against women, but I still believe that any kind of domestic violence is wrong.
Why should Australia say no to violence against women, when they can say no to violence in general?

Re: Sexuality revisited
To really target a problem you have to avoid generalising it too much. It's obvious that the Aussies are going to oppose violence, because pretty much every stable country makes an effort to oppose it. If they speak out against violence aimed at women and try to stop it, then they might actually get something done.
Re: Sexuality revisited
Veck, that could be taken as a bit rude. The last remark, that is. Just saying.

Re: Sexuality revisited
Well, it's not meant to be. Think of it like a war. If the US government stepped out and said 'we will oppose war' then would they get anywhere? Whereas if they said 'we will oppose the Afghan war' then they will be able to take action on that front.
Re: Sexuality revisited
So you want them to be more ambiguous in their choices. Or should that be dis-ambiguous?

Re: Sexuality revisited
Not really. People just need to make sure they're fighting for the right things, instead of just saying 'we don't like this enormous generalisation' and not acting on it because they can't.
Re: Sexuality revisited
So you mean instead of saying we will build this as a whole building, we should built a room?

Re: Sexuality revisited
Well, you don't build every room in a house in onego, so yeah, I guess I am saying that.
Re: Sexuality revisited
By saying 'no to violence against women, you aren't necessarily saying: 'go beat the [&@%!] out of everything that isn't a women.'
It's sad how careful you have to be with words in this day and age.
I have been sort of avoiding this thread, but I must post my opinion
I hate that there is a 'gay community', sexuality really isn't that big a deal. Sure homosexuals have been very poorly treated throughout history, but in modern times it is practically 'cool' to be bisexual in school... Nothing makes me cringe more than a militant homosexual who constantly thinks that sexual preference is some sort of fashion style or life-style. Many gay guys adopt the 'gay persona' and submit to the stereotypes, all the while complaining about how offensive stereotypes are. Gay people will act different because they want to be individual or whatever, but really, by acting flamboyant and 'gay', you are categorizing yourself.
Act natural, talk natural, screw guys or girls. Homosexuality is a sexual preference, not a life-style. Sure, if you are a gay guy that really just feels like a girl in a guys body, then be flamboyant, but most men you'll find are happy to be men. I just don't understand it: if you are a gay girl or guy, you should like the same sex right? Then why do they act to the contrary? Why do gay guys act feminine and gay girls act masculine?
I'm gay, and I act natural, and I like men. Not feminine guys.
And I don't really agree with the gay pride parades. Sure, do it if it is just a fun event, but when you get people constantly waving their sexuality around like it is something physical, that is when I just roll my eyes and think: who cares?
I also don't completely agree with gay marriage. It is a christian ceremony after all, and everyone knows how their credence goes in regards to homosexuality. Some of you might try to say that Christianity doesn't oppose homosexuality, but oh, it does. Don't try to make alternate routes around facts. If you are a devout christian, acknowledge that you must suppress your gay tendencies, or, as a more real alternative: drop religion and live your life how you want to live it.
But I don't really agree with marriage at all. I don't see why someone needs signed bureaucratic papers to express their love for another. And if the signing is solely to confirm someones devotion towards you, then obviously the problem is related to trust issues.
But I must acknowledge the legal benefits of marriage of course, considering this: gays should have the right to legally bind themselves. Or, casual barriers should be lifted so marriage isn't forced into consideration for some people.
So to sum up what I believe: being gay is not a persona, it isn't an accent, it isn't a culture or a community. It is a sexual preference. Live how you want, and don't wave your tastes in other peoples faces.

Erm... I'm quite devout and I don't resent gays. That's one generalisation.

Marriages are performed all over the world by different peoples. Don't you dare call it a christian ceremony. How selfish of you. You're a silly person.

Re: Sexuality revisited
Like I stated before. To mark a whole religion as anti-gay is like judging homosexuality. It's stupid and wrong. Some christians (the conservative ones such as Roman Catholics and Jehovah's witnesses) are more likely to be anti-gay as it is what they believe. You do get liberal denominations such ad the church of England that accept homosexuality. It is unfair to judge a religion as a whole. We call that stereotyping.
And marriage hasn't been a religious ceremony for years. Sure you do not need it to show your love for someone but it does show that you are truly ready to commit to one another. It is a religious contract to god for some but to most it is a symbol of commitment.

Re: Sexuality revisited
^ That. lol
Marriage is what you see it as. For people who enter it with the idea of it being a religious ceremony that's what it is; You could be married by some unlicensed priest of your unrecognised religion and you'll consider yourself married in the eyes of your God(s), not in the eyes of any other religion or in the eyes of the law though.
I think for the majority of people it's more of a social thing though, people grow up seeing that marriage is the 'ultimate commitment' of a couple, when they wanna show it they get married themselves.
There're arguments that state marriage is healthy for anyone, despite who they're marrying, purely for the fact it's a public commitment to a monogamous relationship.
As far as the LGBT community; Any group of people is considered a community. TES (In the grand scheme of things) wouldn't be considered a very big deal, but here's this wiki and forum with all these users, dedicated to TES. And there are others, too.
I think media popularisation of some stereotypes does influence alot of people during the whole 'realisation' period, probably because that's all they have for perspective and during the teen years "who you are" generally takes a backseat to "how do people perceive me."
Same as straight teenage girls bathing in fake tan until they're orange so that they look like that one off Jersey Shore.
So once people are ready to show other people they do it in the most obvious way, because they think it's important.
It has curved off later, I know more gay guys now than I used to, and the fabulous flamboyant ones are now in the minority.
But I think overall I agree. Sexuality's just that.
Don't take it too seriously. Gay jokes are fun.

Re: Sexuality revisited
I agree with most of your responses. And I'm sorry for upsetting you Cam.
Growing up in a christian family, and having read the bible more then once, I am pretty sure that homosexuality isn't smiled upon.
Being gay, I have thoroughly looked into all this.
I think this is how a passage goes:
Thou shalt not lay with another man, it is an abomination.
Sure, the more liberal branches of certain theologies are lightening up due to serious social pressure; but in fact, homosexuality has been historically infamous in regards to Christianity.
Please don't accuse me of generalization. Or call me a silly person. And I'm not quite sure how my statement makes me selfish either.

Me upset? I don't get upset. Whenever a sentence contains the word "silly" You have nothing to fear.
