Re: Locked in prison!
I think it would be cool to wake up lying in the snow looking up at the sky (sun in your eyes), when you see two hunters walk by, then they notice you offer you there hand get you up, and give you the tutorial.
They could say a greeting like "You don't look like you've been in Skyrim before, before you go I'll give you some basic survival tips".
I imagine what ever bethesda do it will be good and done to show off the games graphics engine.

Well...it's not that bad and it's sort of traditional :p But I'd prefer something else.

It would be nice to be you know, born and raised. But this sorta gives your character a mystey storyline, like this big RPG fans like me who have big imaginations you can make up your own backstory! Plus the who "starting in jail" thing has litterally grown own me. I just prefer it this way.

I would like to not start from a prison cell, but to still have to rise from the level of scum in order to save the world

If I knew ahead of time where and when I would need to physically defend myself or others, I would simply avoid that time and place...but I don't...hence CPL...

Re: Locked in prison!
Having heard the GameInformer pod-cast I've been making some guesses about the beginning. Todd howard said that we will encounter a dragon and that encounter will lead to the greybeard's calling our name on the wind to come and learn they way of the voice. If this is a scripted encounter then presumably it needs to take place somewhere they know we're going to be. So....I'm guessing that however the game starts (whether we are in a cell, part of some sort of prison transport or at our plannd execution) that there will be some sort of dragon attack that inadvertently helps to free us.

Re: Locked in prison!
Now what you said sparked a thought in my head. What if that place we need to go to isn't actually close to where we start and we're not told to go there or only get vague directions. That way we wouldn't be thrown into the main quest right away because before that one dragon attack (if it really is an attack) there are no dragons. Now that would be good. I won't even have to get an alternative start mod when I'm bored of the MQ ^.^River wrote:Having heard the GameInformer pod-cast I've been making some guesses about the beginning. Genius! I bet thats whats going to happen. You will be in jail, then a dragon swoops down, and then...RIOT! ESCAPE! fin.River wrote:Having heard the GameInformer pod-cast I've been making some guesses about the beginning. I think it would be interesting to awaken at the end of an attack with carnage all around you-and you have NO MEMORY of who you are or why you are there. (Since we don't start out picking out skills right off - we can "learn" who we are as we progress . )As you sit up and realize you don't know who you are or where you are- you notice the fire and evidence of the attack around. You duck behind some cover to watch the last of the dragons fade in the distance. As they fade you can have a vision and hear the call that starts the quest. A good traditional Elder Scroll tactic.
I, too, would like the call to be vague so you can do some exploring. Maybe a whisper of a vision and voice saying something like, "your destiny is here." with a vision of the area to meet the greybeard. The greybeard can actually prompt the memory by saying whatever name the charcter's creater has picked out. Like "Wilda, your destiny is here." and a fuzzy vision of a cave entrance that overlooks a unique landmark. Which would make the character determained to find the greybeard to find out what he knows about the character besides his name so they go looking for that landmark. There would be no need for the Greybeard to know anything but our name since it will probably be give to him in a dream. That way we can keep any personal attachment to any story we develop about the character as we develop them.
Just a thought. Sherrid
PS this senario would work well with the prison senario as well. I like the tradition of the prison, but also like alternative start programs made by moders. But the prison is a well honored tradition.

Re: Locked in prison!
Maybe you live on a farm or a little village(or a prison if you perfer) and it gets attackt by an dragon(not the leader, just the first dragon you kill) and most people you know get killed by him. and when you go after the dragon to kill it, you get stopt by the guy who helps you to kill the dragons, you know, the former blade.
and he gifs you your training first to kill the dragons and save tamriel.
and maybe after the first dragon he sees that you are dragonborn, because you gane the ability of the dragon shout.
the attack and the training could be the tutorial and the fist dragon could be at a quarter of the game.

Re: Locked in prison!
In fact, we shouldn't be destined to be anything at all.
Who says I want to be the Dragonborn?
So, I get there has to be some 'facts' in place about the character, but I still think making a 99% blank past is easier than making a colourful one.

Re: Locked in prison!
I don't think that Dragonborn is quite the same as saying you're the Nerevarine. I think it simply means you've the natural ability to use Dragon Shouts, and thus slay dragons. I imagine you'll still have total freedom to ignore the main quest as well as denying any prophecies or whatever. The thing is though, you can't complain that much because that's literally the basis of the series, prophecy. The Elder Scrolls are prophecies that are often about beings called Heroes, people that sort of supersede destiny and do what they want. This is why you can "change your fate" in Oblivion by using the birthstones, and why you become so powerful. In every game you're some sort of chosen one, regardless of what path you take.

I am the chosen Scrib Slayer for example. An uber powerful Hero, whose sole goal is to rid the world of Scribs. Forget about the Volcano, someone else can handle it.

Re: Locked in prison!
I actually found myself unemployed in Cyrodil. It seems someone beat me to it, so I set about trying to save the world, since it didn't seem that anything else worthwhile was happening.
And I like the idea of waking in jail, seems very familiar and I like that.

I guess that's the point. Every TES game has started that way more or less, right? You didn't actually start IN prison in Morrowind, but you start by coming off the prison ship that's carried you from prison, perhaps even the same cell you wake up in in Oblivion.
