Re: Dragon shouts in future games.
I like the idea. And half of the races do seem to have some form of special power.
Bosmer: The Great Hunt
Altmer: The Old Way (technically its just an ancient way of using magic, but then so is the Thu'um)
Redguard: You already mentioned
Nords: Thu'um, already been explored
Khajiit: Have the Moon sugar, like you said, they could get some power from this
and that's all I can think of, but Beth. could always create new lore for the other races.

Becoming the HoonDing might be cool for some kind of spin-off game. It would force you to use bladed weapons, which wouldn't sit well with Bethesda's "be anyone, do anything" motto for the main series. Re: Dragon shouts in future games.
I like it, Pilaf; I thought of Sword-Singing as soon as I saw this thread. Though I don't particularly like the idea of going to Hammerfell. Did enough desert-roaming in New Vegas.
Even if they didn't keep some fourth combat option equivalent to shouts, they can still improve magic, archery, and basic combat to retain Skyrim's more dynamic fighting. Let really good archers stand out more, like firing faster and more accurately, or maybe firing two arrows at once. Invent new uses for basic magic, or return old uses to us (you know what I'm talking about). They can always improve unarmed combat, make better use of throwing daggers and spear weapons, and/or improve sword dueling mechanics. They can also do a lot more to improve environmental warfare; a lot of difficult combat scenarios could be turned into quasi-puzzles in that fashion. Players could be more acrobatic and maneuverable. Underwater combat is also something they haven't touched on. And, of course, add on to the lore to give some cultures unheard-of power. I'd like to see a Wild Hunt, with the Bosmers morphing into various beasts. Plenty of options.
I've been thinking of Battle Cry as a sort of primitive, untrained shout since I first heard about Dragon Shouts. It's not absurd to think that they could find a way for Nords, and possibly other races, to unlock maybe one or two simple shouts in future games, though it should take quite a bit of time/effort to do so.

Re: Dragon shouts in future games.
Isn't that sort of what each game does already, though, introducing the PC as hero to a particular set of the lore? (Well, particularly the last three, I suppose.) Or do you mean just as a sort of racial perk or special power as a race? I still think that's a bit much and not necessarily lore appropriate, for reasons I already mentioned above. And we do have lesser powers already that make more sense in day to day application.Pilaf The Defiler wrote:So nobody likes my idea?

Still, a neat idea on your part, I should say!

Re: Dragon shouts in future games.
The problem us that those lesser powers sucked, in a major way; they've got nothing on shouting. What lesser power lets me rip your health, your magicka, and your stamina, your vitality away from you. What lesser power gave me your soul. None, there are none. Shouts just make even the berserker warrior into a lore-friendly and liked battlemage and vessel of power.Avron the S'wit wrote:Isn't that sort of what each game does already, though, introducing the PC as hero to a particular set of the lore? Re: Dragon shouts in future games.
True, but dragons shouts in non-dragonborn characters is far fetched, since it takes years and years to learn, like I pointed out. So it would certainly be "more exciting," but much less plausible! I can see a Dunmeri ancestral ghost; I can't see someone who magically gets interrupted from study of the thu'um, which takes decades, and knows enough to utter multiple words of great power. No way.
I'm so boring. I know. I tend to beat people up the old fashioned way...with my sword.

I know, I'm just saying as long as screaming like a psychopath isn't the way to do it, the whole "powerful hero" thing could work. But it can't come from your hands, because then you are a mage. I think eye's should be next.

Re: Dragon shouts in future games.
I think you're always a powerful hero, really, when you think about it. It's just how are we valuing or basing power? Surely the Nerevarine had great political power, whereas the Dragonborn had awesome magical power. The cool thing about TES is it's open ended enough for you to be whoever you want to be...and you don't always have to be super powerful/overpowered. Part of the charm is developing into that mighty warrior, I say.

Re: Dragon shouts in future games.
The fans will never let that kind of power go. Because Skyrim has gone main steam even dlc problems have exploded. This makes me think that true Roleplayers, hard core fans like the people here, are now the minority. They need there ragdoll effect, and shield bashing finishing moves. I doubt that these fans will want something like shouts gone.

Now? The "hardcore" fans have been the minority since Morrowind was introduced to console players, at the latest. Not trying to bash anyone; I'm a console who got into the series with Morrowind. It's just that it opened it up the series to a wider range of mostly casual players.Br3admax wrote:The fans will never let that kind of power go. Re: Dragon shouts in future games.
does no one think that a game like skyrim will bring new 'hardcore' players into the fold?
when i played d&d for the first time, it was because there was sod all else to do with my over active imagination, and that sort of game was reserved mainly for the most nerdy of imaginations cos you were essentially sat round a table with funny dice and bits of paper. It was also cheap and easy to get into if you had that sort of mind
But now Computer games, tv shows and movies, are now being made by people like me (and have been for the last decade or two) who played D&D read LOTR and watched star wars when they were X years old. So the RPG mentality is very much main stream now so it is actually very difficult for the kids growing up today to avoid thinking in RPG terms
So I find it strange when anyone talks about the great cultural loss to the hardcore fan with the dumbing down/more accessibility etc. This society we inhabit IS the world of the hardcore gamer

My thoughts too. It is it not only the Dragonborn who can use these shouts? I don't think they will be included in any future games.Musicman247 wrote:What makes you think we'll be playing as a Dragonborn in TES VI?
And yes I know that regular people can learn it, too, but it takes them years just to master a single word.

I think even the "casual" fans will be okay with the absence of shouts, assuming Bethesda will find some new gimmick relating to the lore of the next game.
Start the groove.

Re: Dragon shouts in future games.
That's kind of silly, though. Games are made to appeal to a wide range of players, and Skyrim really hit the nail on the head with that. It's awesome enough that I enjoy it as a TES fan and love it as a casual gamer. The same is true with a lot of things in the series. The TES games are nice because they allow you to get as involved as you want, whether it's deep into the universe or just a little.
So, "hardcore" is really kind of odd. Besides, I see things differently than other hardcore fans all the time, but that's fine by me.

All of that is true, but I know people who have only done the MQ, and have never played again. "(My real name) that game you recommended only lasted 5 hours." That is not hardcore, or even casual.

Re: Dragon shouts in future games.
Again, sandbox games allow you to do what you want to whatever extent you want - that's kind of the appeal. Some people are linear and just want to do the MQ. I wouldn't bother worrying about them. After all, I put thousands of hours in Oblivion...most just walking around the towns or riding my horse back and forth between my residences.

Apparently your imagination is more limited than mine, because you think it has to literally be a sword.
Why couldn't the sword be a hammer or bow? Or a spell amplifier? Or a tunnel of wind that allows one to teleport? Or the charisma to rally the troops and get the girl?
Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.
