resist/reflect/absorb magic

Post by weka »

Does anyone know exactly how these work?

I currently use:
28 resist magic
17 reflect spell
17 absorb spell

So does that just mean that I have a total of 62% (I'm not even sure if they are percentages or not) overall immunity to magic?

Or does each one work independently to give an overall total of magic getting through of around 53%? I.e.:

Hit with 100 magic
17 immediately reflected back to leave:
83; 28% of which is resisted to leave:
63.91; 17% of which is absorbed.

And does anyone know why it works on my own items as well? I have to make sure that I put on my "fortify strength" armour while I'm not wearing my magic immunity pieces (I haven't actually worked out yet if it's all of them, or only one, or a partics combo), otherwise the extra amount that I can carry can be severely reduced. I can see the logic of it, but it is annoying to have to strip down every time I want to change from my Stormrider boots to my Marsh boots!

I am not 100% confident of my knowledge, but I give it a shot:

Resist Magicka reduces the effects of hostile magic damage or effects against your character. This does not affect Fire/Frost/Shock magic attacks nor Poison applied through a weapon attack. What is reduced is direct magic damage, such as Damage spells, Drain spells. So for your character, you will take 28% less damage from such attacks (e.g. You take 72 damage from a 100 Damage Health spell effect)

I also believe that Resist Magicka works against magic spell effects like Paralysis and Silence; since there is not magitude on these effects, I believe the duration is shortened instead. I once got 100% Resist Magic on a character who ended up shrugging off Paralysis spells cast by certain Daedra (plus I never saw her affected by Damage or Drain spells anymore, probably Silence too). She can still be damaged/drained/paralysed/silenced by weapon poison though since she has no resistance to Poison. I dunno if Adsorb spells are also resisted as such, anyone confirm?

Reflect Spell gives a chance that a hostile spell effect (including Fire/Frost/Shock spells) that strikes is reflected back at the caster who receives the hostile effects of his own spell. So your 17% Reflect Spell means you have a 17% chance to bounce the spell back at the caster. I do not know if Reflect Spell interfere with Chapel Shrine effects (but I can test since I just scrapped up enough items to get 100% cumulative Reflect Spell)

Adsorb Spell gives a chance that a spell effect (including Fire/Frost/Shock spells) aimed at you is adsorbed harmlessly and converted into Magicka to replenish your Magicka reserves. So again, you listed that you have 17% chance of adsorbing a spell effect cast on you. A problem with Adsorb Spell is the chance to adsorb beneficial spells cast on you from Chapel Shrines: especially useful for an Atronach Birthsign character as another means of regaining Magicka, but irritating when you need the healing/restoration effect.

All the above effects work seperately from each other; but I can't tell whether Reflect or Adsorb takes precedence ... Resist Magicka should be at the bottom, I believe.

Note that 100% Reflect Spell or Adsorb Spell effectively grants immunity to hostile magic since the spells ALWAYS gets reflected or adsorbed ...

None of these effects interfere with self-targeted benefical spells cast by yourself (e.g. healing, restoration, fortify) but I can't say about self-targeted harmful spells since I never experimented. I do believe that some claimed casting a Drain spell on self does get increased by Weakness to Magicka (from the Apprentice Birthsign or hostile spells) so it stands to reason that Resist Magicka should protect from harmful self-target spells of the right type.

For those who have better knowledge of magic effects in The Elder Scrolls, please correct any errors I have made.

Thanks for all that SupidSeep, loads of really good detail.

Still not quite sure why it affects my armour (gauntlets of gluttony etc) if I have the magic immunity pieces equipped first. I still haven't chk'd yet to see which effect it is that blocks at least part of the "fortify strength" constant effects.
